5 Isekai Protagonists Who Improve Their New World

From death by accident to being reincarnated into a world of swords and magic, Isekai is a genre that is filled to the brim with tropes and cliches. That is why the overwhelming majority of Isekai anime follows the same template with some twists and turns to make it different from its peers.

One of the tropes that are shared between tons of Isekai anime is "A person or a group of people who are summoned to the new world and are tasked to be the hero". They all have their unique ways to go about it, but the outline usually remains the same.

That being said, there are characters who deviate from those tropes. Rather than simply being a hero, they choose to be a ruler over their own domain. These are 5 characters that build a city in the new world.

5. Makoto Misumi From Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu (Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy)

Makoto is an unwanted hero in the Moonlit Fantasy. He was discarded by the Goddess who summoned him and forced him to live among the monsters. Nevertheless, rather than being depressed and frustrated, Makoto manages to help build a permanent village in an alternate dimension for the helpless monsters that he encounters.

Over time, the village flourished into a little town as the population grew. Makoto acts as the mayor of the town and helps all of the different species to settle down and cultivate the land. The harvest will be sold to the nearest human city. In a relatively short amount of time, Makoto successfully built a prosperous city where every race can live harmoniously under the same banner.

4. Shiroe From Log Horizon

Shiroe and thousands of other gamers are stuck in a new world that resembles both the popular MMORPG called Elder Tale and also the real place in Akihabara. There was a lot of chaos and confusion at first until Shiroe, along with other guilds leaders, decided to step up and govern the city of Akiba.

They established the Round Table Council and effectively became the government of the city. They create rules and guidelines to make life easier for every player who lives in Akiba. They also create banks, town halls, and other important public infrastructures. They encounter lots of problems along the way, mainly regarding laws, money, and logistics, but their young democratic government keeps on learning and adapting in order for everybody to lead a decent life in this new world.

3. Kazuya Souma From Genjitsu Shugi Yuusha no Oukoku Saikenki (How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom)

From now on, we'll move on from the concept of city-building and enter the realm of nation-building. In the Realist Hero, Kazuya Souma was summoned to be a hero who will face the threat of the demon army and bring peace to the world, at least that was how everything was supposed to go. Instead, Kazuya found himself donning the crown of the kingdom of Elfrieden. So now, Kazuya is tasked to rebuild the tattered kingdom into its former glory.

Kazuya realizes early on that rather than worrying over an external threat like the demon army, which is a waste of time, he needs to focus on fixing the economy and the quality of life of the people first. So he fired every government official and replaced them with new ones that actually know what they are doing. He introduced new food production techniques, enacted new and fairer policies, and revitalized the economy as a whole while regaining the public trust in the process. There are tons of other complicated issues to deal with, but for the most part, Kazuya is doing a great job as the acting king of the world that is entirely foreign to him.

2. Ainz Ooal Gown From Overlord

Momonga is the leader of a dark guild called Ainz Ooal Gown, from the popular MMORPG game called YGGDRASIL. When he, along with every NPC that the guild members have created within the Great Tomb of Nazarick, is transported into a new world, Momonga adopts the name Ainz Ooal Gown and starts to expand their territory.

He conquered the area around The Great Tomb of Nazarick and even annexed some regions from the neighboring countries. He created a new country called The Sorcerer Kingdom and named himself The Sorcerer King.

Ainz works hard to make sure every species can live peacefully within his kingdom and fulfill everything that the citizens need. Admittedly, some of those solutions seem a bit unorthodox, such as providing undead summons as free laborers to work on farms, but at the end of the day, he strives to be a just king in his own way.

1. Rimuru Tempest From Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime)

When Satoru Mikami died, he was transported into a new world as a slime. Later on, he is given the name of Rimuru Tempest by Storm Dragon Veldora. It doesn't take long for the good-natured Rimuru to find some loyal followers.

To accommodate the needs of his people, he created the Tempest village. There are only around thirty villagers at first, and most of them are goblins, but as time passes and Rimuru's extraordinary activities, powers, and achievements begin to be known publicly, more and more monsters come to settle down in Tempest. That is how it becomes a small town in the middle of the Jura forest.

Upon further discussion with other representatives of the Jura Forest, they agreed to name Rimuru Tempest as their king, and their territory is now known as The Jura Tempest Federation, with the city of Tempest as the capital. Rimuru quickly begins to work on public infrastructures, logistics for the growing number of people in Tempest, creating a security network, conducting trade with neighboring countries, and tons of other complicated things in order to create a country where every species can live in harmony.

Final Thoughts

Every character in this list has their fair share of battles and actions within their own stories, but the inclusion of the city-building element, or nation-building to some, elevates the complexity of the story even further. Now they are no longer just a hero, they have become a ruler. Icons even. Watching how each of them grows their city in their own unique way is not only satisfying but can also become a good lesson on management.

This is not a comprehensive list by any means, so don't hesitate to share with us in the comment section below if you know any other characters that fit the bill.
