Asobi Asobase (Asobi Asobase: Workshop of Fun) Preview (No Spoilers)
Hanako, Olivia, and Kasumi are three girls in the same class who originally came together because Olivia wanted to play Japanese games and Kasumi wanted Olivia to teach her English. They end up making a club called The Past Timers Club where they spend their days playing games that almost always lead to side-splittingly hilarious consequences. Olivia reveals that she cannot speak English and is more or less Japanese since she was born and raised in Japan, and Kasumi comes out as a BL fanatic. Hanako, however, is on a new level. She sets herself up every time leading us to love her all the more. Here are five excellent Hanako highlights.
Hanako Honda Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)
1. Hanako Sets Herself Up for Failure Every Time
Hanako is quite the bag of rocks. It really is amazing how she sets herself up to fail every single time. When they watch over their teacher’s cousin’s baby, Hanako is the one to volunteer to help, but the baby almost ends up killing her. Hanako also fails to deal with anything really as she puts herself in the eye of danger every time. Sugoroku is another one that she creates to have fun, but ends up screwed over massively when Maeda has made a new title that she asked him to make and it did not work.
2. Good Grades Mean Nothing
Hanako has very good grades and actually is second in her class. However, her social graces are a total mess as like above, she always ends up in hilarious failure every time. Another great example is when she plays with the soft tennis team, and ends up crushing them but is bored out of her mind and leaves afterward. Her total lack of self-awareness is hysterical.
3. Total Lack of Fashion Sense
“Dangerous” is the only word that we can use to describe her fashion sense. Hanako dresses akin to a preschooler constantly and it’s her outfit in one the first few episodes that not only burns a person but causes the whole shop that they are in to burn down. All the meanwhile, she swears up and down that it is Harajuku fashion. Another moment is when Kasumi lies to her telling her she looks cute in something. Hanako buys it, goes home, and immediately realizes that her outfit is horribly ugly. She also cannot sew at all. Remember the double boob t-shirt?
4. Dangerously Stupid
This is part of the other two, but Hanako really pushes herself. She often relies on Kasumi and Olivia to explain things to her, but you can tell from their terrified expressions that they are worried about saying the direct answer and crushing her. Either way, it does not go well ever as she always fails to pick up on the implied information, and it backfires on her. It will always backfire.
5. Butt Lasers
This is not a point I ever thought I would bring up, but butt lasers are another fascinating aspect to Hanako. She is the originator of them, being unable to understand something in her childhood, and Maeda lied to her in order not to crush her. Needless to say, butt lasers now have continued to haunt her to this day and any time Maeda bends over, he fires off a laser or destroys a toilet or a door with it. It’s almost like she’s some sort of god in a Haruhi-esque story.
Final Thoughts
With her over-the-top reactions and more, Hanako is a total mess and we love her for it. She really does bring life to the story and we appreciate her for it. Still, we wish she would get some common sense, but maybe like class, it just cannot be bought. In the meantime though, we will enjoy her screeching when she realizes she’s been had–usually it’s too late by that point–and when she flails while failing due to the fact that she isn’t paying attention. What are your favorite moments of Hanako’s? Be sure to let us know down below. Till next time!
