5 Independent VTubers You Should Follow on Twitch

We love Hololive, Nijisanji, and VShojo as much as anyone else (Korone must be loved and protected at all costs), but sometimes it’s good to turn your attention to streamers who don’t have massive corporate backing behind them or a strict code to follow. That’s why we’re here today to introduce you to five independent VTubers on Twitch – in no particular order – who you should check out if you’re looking for something new. Let’s get started!

1. CyYuVTuber

Starting out with someone many of you may already know from his other projects, CyYuVTuber (or just Cy Yu) is the avatar of prolific anime and video game voice actor Alejandro Saab. He plays Genshin Impact, reacts to funny videos and current events, sings, talks about life as a voice actor, and much more. The stream has a jovial, high-energy atmosphere, and Cy Yu clearly loves what he does – so much so that you can always find him gushing over fanart and cosplay over on his Twitter. If that sounds like a good time to you, drop by one of his streams and join in on the fun!

2. Onsta

For those of you whole love pastel colors, adorable art, and simping over fictional men, might we recommend that you check out Onsta? She’s a freelance artist, currently living her best life in Japan, whose cheerful attitude is nothing less than infectious. She mainly streams herself drawing, but also plays many SEGA, Capcom, and indie games – particularly those in the Yakuza series because she has an apocalyptic crush on series protagonist/human refrigerator Kazuma Kiryu. If you ever need a pick-me-up when you’re feeling down, hop on over to Onsta’s channel and you’ll be smiling again in no time.

3. MissShadowLovely

MissShadowLovely, or Liz, is a chill streamer with a variety of content – Marvel SNAP, Overwatch 2, Dead by Daylight, and more – but who we love most for her reaction streams. Her commentary on bizarre food creations from content farms or some strange “horror” channel that may or may not be in on its own joke has just the right combination of dry comedy and genuine insight to keep us hooked for hours. Occasionally her friends will join the call and add their own perspectives to the mix, which gives the stream a “best buddies shooting the breeze” atmosphere. Tune in and feel your stress melt away...

4. MissJackieCR

If you love interacting with your favorite streamer in fun and creative ways, MissJackieCR’s channel is for you. This comfy variety streamer has a program called Chat Cat, which uses text-to-speech to read a chat member’s message out loud as a little cat character. You can also use specific HTML commands to change the speed and tone of the voice, as well as produce a variety of wacky sound effects. She posts the best of these on her Tiktok page, so once you’ve gotten yourself acquainted with Miss Jackie’s vibe through those highlights, jump into a livestream and experience it for yourself!

5. DoigSwift

Most VTubers have a rigged 2D model with limited movement, or perhaps a 3D one that can track their body to a degree, but the two streamers behind DoigSwift have created an entire little Unity scene to run around in! Michael Doig and India Swift are a (very charming) Ireland-based duo who specialize in animation and game development, so their streams are often focused on coding and art. They control their cartoon bird and bear avatars like video game characters, and chat members can trigger all sorts of effects like switching off gravity or firing a box of Jaffa Cakes at them. DoigSwift is perfect for those looking to learn more about programming, or people who just like to watch two little gremlins make each other laugh.

Author: Mary Lee Sauder

After the hard-hitting East Coast lifestyle hit me a bit too hard, I started pursuing my passion as a writer in my cozy home state of Ohio. Aside from that, I spend my time cooking, cosplaying, collecting anime merch, and being an improv comedy actor. I also love sneaking alliterations and stupid puns into my writing, so be on the lookout for them! 😉
