Kyouma Mabuchi Preview (No Spoilers)
In the near future, an endless energy source has been found thanks to the discovery of the fourth dimension, Dimension W. Coils are used to harness the energy but the New Tesla Company has monopolized their creation and sale. Thanks to that, there are those who manufacture unstable illegal coils which bounty hunters known as Collectors, are sent to confiscate. Kyouma is a Collector with a mysterious past and personally refuses to use coils as he hates them with a passion. As luck would have it, on one of his retrieval missions, he runs into an android that he ends up having to team up with so they can both find the answers they seek.
Kyouma Mabuchi Bio
Born in the early 2000s, Kyouma grew up with his father who was a car mechanic. Later, while in school, he met a girl, Miyabi, and fell in love. When Miyabi was diagnosed with a terminal disease, he joined the special-ops unit Grendel where he was the only one who wasn’t coil powered. During a dangerous mission on Easter Island something goes wrong and Kyouma wakes up with no memory of the event, is one of the only 2 survivors, and is told Miyabi didn’t survive the procedure to save her life.
Unsurprisingly, he develops a burning hate for the technology that took everything from him and now works as a coil recovery agent, avoiding using any himself. He finds and retrieves illegal coils for a living along with Mira, the android girl he found one day during a mission. Together they come across evil, corruption and beings from other dimensions on their way to finding the truth behind Dimension W.
Kyouma Mabuchi Highlights
1. Smooth Moves
One of the best parts of the Dimension W OP is watching Kyouma dance to the electronic beats of Stereo Dive Foundation’s “Genesis”. He’s just so cool! But not only can he dance; his fighting moves are also pretty impressive. Having been a part of the special-ops group Grendel, and with no help from coils at that, he was trained in all sorts of martial arts and weapon use. This further enhanced his natural superhuman strength and abilities.
Besides being nearly unbeatable at hand-to-hand combat, Kyouma shows us his skills from the first episode where he goes all parkour while chasing after Mira; going up, over and under obstacles and ending up on a rooftop chase. And of course, we can’t forget the amazing accuracy he has with those big throwing Skewers of his! An ability he shows he’s had since his younger years, when he throws a can into the small opening of a recycling bin from far away; after kicking several punks’ asses of course.
2. Tough Guy in Love
Being as tough as Kyouma is, it’s hard to imagine him ever showing a soft side to anybody. However, when he was in college, he met a sweet, clumsy Miyabi who saw past his rough exterior and treated him tenderly. This obviously won him over and our tough guy fell in love.
He was so smitten by this little girl that he was arrested several times for beating up anyone who dared mess with her. He’d do anything for her, and he did. When she was diagnosed with a deadly disease, he chased down the only doctor who could help and that was the reason he joined Grendel, so she could be part of an experimental treatment when she became sick.
And oh-my-gosh! That expression on his face when Miyabi kisses him on the cheek! <3
3. Sweet Rides
Maybe it’s because his dad was a mechanic and he grew up around cars, or maybe it’s his hate of coils. Either way, Kyouma owns some pretty badass cars! He usually drives an old-school muscle car that was already a classic when he was born, a white Toyota 2000GT. In the condition Kyouma keeps that car, it’d be worth over $1 million USD!
When he needs even more speed though, he breaks out his white Lexus LFA; a luxury V10 powered baby that gets him where he needs to go at top speed and in oh so much style! And Kyouma doesn’t just keep these cars around; he spends hours working on them and keeping them in top shape. He’s a grease monkey with great taste and a love for fast cars!
4. Old-School Style
Reflecting his aversion to all things coil-related and modern, Kyouma’s look implements a lot of more-than-just-last-season features. While he wears modern-ish pants, he also wears traditional Japanese garb that has definitely been out of style for a while considering the show takes place in 2071. His blue gi and sash with a red happi coat, and sandals with tobi socks give him a unique style that gives us a good idea of his anti-tech philosophy.
Of course, it doesn’t end there; his above mentioned cars add to his old-fashioned style too, as well as his skewers that make no use of coils whatsoever. Not to mention his old-timey garage and the little trailer he lets Mira move into! Kyouma sure knows how to do retro!
5. Cold Front
Something we notice about Kyouma right away is his apparent inability to smile or to feel any sort of empathy for Mira. He never ceases to call her a piece of junk and treats her like he wouldn’t care if she got thrown in a metal compactor. But later, when Mira is ready to give her life to save everyone, he gets upset at her for it and tells her nobody expects her to sacrifice herself before helping her.
This same tough guy with a seemingly frozen heart also hates seeing children get hurt. He completely loses his cool when he sees young prince Lwai get violently murdered and nearly kills K.K. before finding out that Lwai was controlling several androids of his remotely, and therefore, was safe.
It takes a lot to make Kyouma show his emotions, but he is actually a very caring and sweet guy under that tough guy look!
Final Thoughts
Whether you love Kyouma for his sense of style, his awesome cars, his fighting abilities, or even if you just love watching him dance in the opening sequence, one thing is for sure; Kyouma Mabuchi is one cool badass!
Sure, Mira is incredibly adorable and ditsy and we love her for it, but Kyouma is the reason we were stuck to the screen the whole season. And we’d be more than thrilled to follow him on more adventures if a second season were to be released! *Hint, hint, Studio 3Hz*
