It should have been an amazing event, yet the fate of those aboard the Rickenback and the Von Braun would forever be changed in a mere moment. The Von Braun, a ship capable of going fast than light is being escorted by The Rickenback a military starship and the only defense the Von Braun has. During the Von Braun’s maiden voyage, the two ships hear a distress call from a nearby planet and thus send a team to investigate. Upon landing the team finds what appear to be eggs but before they can react the eggs hatch and release an infectious being upon the team and your character. Soon you will learn about “The Many” who has plans for those aboard these two ships. You are but a mere soldier but you must fight back in order to save the rest of the non-infected and possibly the universe.

What’s amazing is how System Shock 2 and Bioshock use their environments to make the player feel claustrophobic all while in areas that aren’t so small in retrospect. Instead of being in a closed off city under the sea, System Shock 2 has players traversing inside two ships flying in an unknown galaxy setting. This leads to the desire to explore their settings thoroughly and incorporates tight first person shooting elements as the player proceeds through the various areas. Similar to Bioshock, in System Shock 2, players gain abilities along their adventure to gain an upper hand on the enemy. You will also gain audio logs as you progress that explain the story in more detail which is a staple of Bioshock’s narrative experience as well. Overall, besides having similar names, System Shock 2 shares a vast majority of the elements that make Bioshock so rich and enjoyable thus why we fully recommend checking System Shock 2 out.

Gordon Freeman has just survived the incident at Black Mesa, or so he thought. That was until he was knocked unconscious by the strange G-Man. Waking up, Gordon notices an unfamiliar city setting and what looks like alien and robotic like creation observing regular humans. Saved by an old comrade, Gordon will soon learn that nearly twenty years have passed as he slept and the world has become overtaken by the Combine. Gordon is asked by his friends to join their struggle to fight back against this alien threat all while finding out why it occurred in the first place. Armed with his trusty crowbar and his HEV suit, Gordon ventures off to fight once more to save the human race.

Half-Life has always stood as a very popular gaming franchise. Once again players control Gordon using a long list of various weapons that range from normal pistols to odd gravity like creations. Bioshock and Half-Life 2 throw players into an unknown world all while being a place by definition you should know. The idea was to use Mars as a means of investigating teleportation technology. After using odd glyphs, tablets and technology, scientists thought they had been successful. However, soon they would learn their teleportation didn’t lead to a normal place but a strange hellish like dimension. After several accidents and tests, the--now--open portal lets strange creatures get loose into our world. You play an unnamed soldier who is tasked with going to Mars to find an important scientist who may have the answers to figuring out what’s going on. Yet as soon as you arrive on Mars you’re not greeted by normal means and discover that what awaits may not be just a regular threat but one straight out of a nightmare.

Doom 3: BFG Edition re-imagines the greatness of the original version of Doom 3 thanks to stronger graphics and enhanced gameplay. As you play Doom 3: BFG Edition, you gain a vast amount of weapons such as shotguns, machine guns, series staple BFG and even a chainsaw. Bloody and violent, Doom 3: BFG Edition takes the mechanics shown in Bioshock and mixes in that tinge of horror to make every encounter with an enemy cause your hair to stand on end. If you want a more visceral version of the gameplay elements that exist in Bioshock you won’t go wrong with picking up Doom 3: BFG Edition.

Based off a novel series and acting as a sequel to Metro 2033. Metro: Last Light Redux continues the story of Artyom as he continues his struggle in the wrecked city that once was Moscow. Having learned the intent of the Dark Ones, the mysterious beings from the first game, Artyom continues to question his decision made a year ago. Making matters worse, the various underground factions such as the Communist Red Line and Nazi Fourth Reich are engaging in deadly battles to determine who should run control of the underground who men and women now call their home. It’s up to Artyom to ensure that the war doesn’t reach his people all while dealing with his own internal battle.

Bioshock had a lot of appeal using a dillaptatitude city scape that showed signs of bustling life at one time and in many ways Metro: Last Light Redux mirrors this strongly in its design. While you won’t find your character wielding magical elements or such in comparison to Bioshock, Metro: Last Light Redux does a terrific job letting you explore a deep dark underground cityscape filled with hidden elements of lore and various threats. Like Bioshock, the FPS elements of Metro: Last Light Redux allow for the use of modern weapons to fight back against the various enemies you’ll engage as you travel around the Metro. Players will learn to use a variety of special items that will keep them alive as well such as gas masks and minecarts which gives the game a truly unique feel. If you want to explore an unused setting in most games thanks to the Russian based theme, play Metro: Last Light Redux.

Halo comes back to the modern consoles thanks to Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Once again jump into the shoes of Master Chief as you fight against the human threat named the Covenant in an enhanced version of the class Halo: Combat Evolved. As you wake up on the destined to fall Pillar of Autumn, Master Chief’s emergency escape pod lands on a circular landscape dubbed Halo. Master Chief will explore this ring like world to search for survivors of the Pillar of Autumn but soon will discover the true nature of the Halo ring. Can the Master Chief fight against the Covenant who worship this ring? Worse yet, can Master Chief survive the entity that lurks in the depths of the Halo Ring?

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is a truly awesome title thanks to enhanced visuals and the great gameplay that the Halo has incorporated in every title. In many ways Bioshock and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary are distant cousins in their themes of exploration and gameplay. Players will gain a wide range of human and alien weapons to combat against the Covenant forces as well as the later game threat. Along the way, players can learn from survivors and in game elements some back story leading to a bigger picture of what is going on in the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary story. Halo is a famous franchise for a reason; thus, we at Honey’s Anime can’t say it enough, if you love games like Bioshock you will love Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.

Dishonored takes place in the city of Dunwall. Dunwall is currently facing several issues including a deadly plague and those who wish to take down the current Empress. Corvo Attano, the lead character, fails in his mission to stop the Empress’s assassination and the kidnapping of Emily, the Empress’s daughter. Framed and locked away in a jail to rot, Corvo is given a second chance when an odd God like being grants Corvo powers for seemingly an unknown reason. Now Corvo must learn the truth to clear his name and to save Emily from her captors.

Dishonored rounds off our list of games like Bioshock. Dishonored allows players to use a myriad of means to defeat enemies such as summoning rats to devour enemies or use your dagger for stealth like approaches. Dishonored gives a true freedom to players allowing no one playthrough to feel like the other. Boasting multiple endings as well as loads of collectible means gamers can easily play Dishonored multiple times and always feel like it’s a fresh new game. Trust us Dishonored is a fun game and you will enjoy every second playing. Like Bioshock, your creativity is allowed to flourish during the game as you approach your obstacles that lie in between you and your goal.
