6 Games Like Revelations: Persona [Recommendations]

INTRODUCTION / OPENING PARAGRAPH

The Persona series has gained a vast amount of popularity thanks to the recent titles such as Persona 3, 4 and newly released 5. However, many forget that beyond the newer age titles stood the first game to begin the Persona franchise proper, Revelations: Persona. Less focused on having students join clubs and making friends with various allies, Revelations: Persona was a JRPG with interesting elements such as first person dungeon exploration and tactical turn based combat. In many ways it’s sad that a vast majority of people have forgotten the roots of this beloved franchise, though we at Honey’s Anime haven’t forgotten. Today our list is aimed at showing you 6 games like Revelations: Persona.

Revelations: Persona aims to bring players multiple gameplay elements such as a deep exploration, a unique story and tactical based battles. That being said, our list aims to find games that mirror those concepts all while not being just mere clones. These titles bring players to experience comedic versions of hell to students who must save the world from military forces. We made sure that our research has found games that you’ll fall in love with just as much as you fell in love with Revelations: Persona. Now then, we here at Honey’s Anime would like you to read on to begin our list of games like Revelations: Persona.

1. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

  • System/Platform: PS3, PS Vita, PC
  • Publisher: Nihon Falcom, Marvelous USA, Nippon Ichi Software
  • Developer: Nihon Falcom, Marvelous USA
  • Release Date: Sept 26, 2013

The Erebonian Empire is facing internal struggles that are causing the various factions to look at one another worryingly. Though our story takes place outside of the military turmoil that may ensue, it focuses on Thors Military academy where a new year is about to start. Rean Schwarzer has just been enrolled and is looking forward to his school life alongside others, until he notices that, unlike other students, his uniform is the color of crimson while theirs are green or white. That is because Rean and several others have been placed in a special class of their own where commoners and royalty are forced to team up together. Little does this class know, they will have to learn to like one another as their skills will be put to the test in more ways than one.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is a great way for us to start our list of games like Revelations: Persona. Players take control of Rean as they balance school life and fighting against various forces. While in many ways The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel could stand more alongside the newer Persona titles, we feel that it shares a lot with Revelations: Persona thanks to clever battle mechanics and a deceptive school life concept. If you want a game that can feel like both Revelations: Persona and some of the newer Persona titles we highly recommend trying out this amazing JRPG. Seriously we don’t envy the students of these games, we had a hard enough time in school just dealing with tests and the occasional school event. These kids have to fight monsters and all the while must pass exams.

The world of Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars is a bleak one. Humanity is in constant terror of Dusk Circles which form around the world allowing creatures to break through and attack humans. However, there lies salvation in the form of children who are born with the power to fight back against these creatures, especially our main hero who is dubbed “God’s Gift”. Going to an academy where others bear the mark, our hero must form bonds with others in order to create Star Children who are gifted small beings also able to fight the creatures. A very unique school life awaits God’s Gift can he manage school and dealing with girls?

Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars is a very unique JRPG. Players must manage building bonds with girls in order to summon beings with unique classes, very akin to Revelations: Persona in some respect to the personas themselves. In combat, players must balance their various classes and use the best skills to hit the weak spot of their opponents. Graphically Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars attempts to be akin to an anime not unlike Revelations: Persona’s graphical look and feel. Overall, if you want a deep game like Revelations: Persona with some unique elements, Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars awaits.

3. Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl

  • System/Platform: Nintendo 3DS
  • Publisher: Atlus, Nippon Ichi Software
  • Developer: Atlus
  • Release Date: Jun 27, 2013

Eltria is a very unusual city thanks in part to an odd dungeon like place called the Yggdrasil Labyrinth. Various explorers and researchers chance the unknown labyrinth in search of knowledge, fame and fortune despite the dangers that exist within. A Highlander one day is tasked by his master to enter the dungeon to map the first floor. Returning successful, the Highlander alongside several others are to go forth and explore the deeper levels. What awaits this group in the further depths of this labyrinth and are they prepared to find out?

Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl shares several connections to Revelations: Persona, especially in terms of gameplay. Players will explore and map out the large labyrinth all while facing enemies using the story set classes or created classes though going with the latter removes the story elements in lieu of a more freedom based experience. Like Revelations: Persona most of the game is explored in first person while inside the labyrinth, in combat while not switching perspective like Revelations: Persona, players must utilize different skills and classes to take down various foes. We here at Honey’s Anime highly recommend Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl if you loved the exploration in Revelations: Persona and the deep strategy approach in combat.

Deciding to join, Vayne will just have to deal with his various odd classmates and new friends. However, Vayne’s biggest threat will soon come forth and it will be up to him and his friends to battle against this unknown evil to not only save his own hide, but the school.

Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis is a fun JRPG that has a lot of similar ideas to Revelations: Persona all while being very different in execution. In Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis, players must take on quests and assignments that are graded after completion based on time taken and quality of how the task was handled. An example of this is if you’re tasked with making a potion, you can use simple ingredients from the various dungeons, but if you risk it you can actually find better materials for a better grade in the depths of said dungeons. Through all of this though, players need to make sure to grind and fight various enemies for ingredients. Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis boils down to making sure you take risks when necessary and in many ways Revelations: Persona is similar in that nature.

5. Disgaea: Hour of Darkness

  • System/Platform: PS2
  • Publisher: Nippon Ichi Software, Atlus, Square Enix Holdings, Koei, THQ, Koei Tecmo, NIS America
  • Developer: Nippon Ichi Software

To make matters worse, Laharl will also have to deal with some of the strangest individuals one could imagine. The demon world is about to become very noisy…

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is the first title in the insanely popular Disgaea series. Players take Laharl and various others into combat using not only various weapons, skills and object but even can throw other party members at the enemy to cause damage. Disgaea: Hour of Darkness offers a lot of customization in party and plenty of hours of gameplay like Revelations: Persona. It seems funny that Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is where a franchise first started and it’s on the list where Revelations: Persona did the same exact feat. Odd characters, hours of fun gameplay and a fun story make Disgaea: Hour of Darkness worthy of being on our 6 games like Revelations: Persona list.

6. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey

  • System/Platform: Nintendo DS

Thanks to a special suit called the Demonica, the team enters the Schwarzwelt to discover something horrific. The Schwarzwelt is actually another world that harbors demons and the Schwarzwelt plans to expand over the world to allow them free reign. Now you as the leader of the investigation team must discover within the Schwarzwelt a way to prevent this from happening…or help it happen faster.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey wraps up our list and we couldn’t be happier. Like Revelations: Persona, the game centers on a mixture of using demons as allies and communicating with them to change their allegiance. Also like Revelations: Persona, players must navigate various dungeons all in first person making these two titles almost identical in gameplay. There are plans to release an updated version of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey sometime in the later part of 2017, but we assure you that the original is perfectly fine as is. Multiple endings, a very cool story and overall amazing First Person RPG mechanics lead us to say there is no better game to wrap up this list indeed.
