Similar Games to The Elder Scrolls

1. Gothic II

  • System/Platform: PC
  • Publisher: JoWooD Productions (EU), Atari
  • Developer: Piranha Bytes
  • Release Date: Nov 29, 2002

Taking the role of a nameless hero—the same one from the first game—you live in a world that is facing a dark time. Thanks to an incident at a prison camp, the kingdom is facing an ore shortage. Sent by the king the hero ends up almost killed but is saved by a man named Xardas. Your savior tells the hero that an evil army has been created by the guidance of dragons. Now you must find a crystal which can apparently give you the ability to understand and speak with the dragons to see if there can be a peaceful resolution to this situation.

Let us begin our 6 Games Like The Elder Scrolls titles with an older title that still holds a place in our hearts called Gothic II. Similar to most of the Elder Scrolls titles, players of Gothic II can choose how they wish to play. Do you want to be a hero who saves the world or will you side with the evil forces? Regardless of how you choose Gothic II aims to be a RPG that gives players the feeling of a truly open world with tons to see and do. Dated or not, Gothic II stands against the test of time and proves to be a classic that fans of western type RPGs should definitely pick up and play.

2. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

  • System/Platform: PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One
  • Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
  • Developer: Monolith Productions
  • Release Date: Sept 30, 2014

Taking place in the same world as The Lord of the Rings novel series, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor gives us a story untold. Players assume the role of Talion, a captain stationed at the Black Gate of Mordor. One day, the gate is attacked by the evil Sauron’s deadly orc army and Talion watches in horror as his family is killed before him. Talion, who nearly dies as well, finds an unlikely savior. A wraith named Celebrimbor merges with the captain and keeps him from dying from his wounds. Now the two journey on a quest to get revenge against Sauron’s army.

Maybe our first title is a bit too slow and classic, well no worries, folks Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is like Elder Scrolls but is far from the classic RPG theme. In Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor players will take Talion and fight against waves of enemies using Talion’s great skills with a blade to decimate enemy forces. Players will need to mix in counters and evasions if they wish to truly fight against some of the tougher enemies but regardless of how you approach fights Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor feels great to play. Developers Monolith Productions took some clear notes from games like the newer Batman Arkham titles to make combat feel unlike most RPGs of the same nature. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor plays like a faster paced Elder Scrolls title but still keeps that adventure theme by offering plenty to do and see in the world J. R. Tolkien built.

Dragon’s Dogma was already a great game when it first released in May 2012 but a year later, we would get to witness an updated version titled Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. The core of the game remained the same, players ventured in a large world fighting various enemies with either swords or magic all while having to even sometimes climb the larger beasts to defeat them. All too similar to games from the Elder Scrolls series, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen contains hundreds of quests and multiple ways to accomplish them. Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen even contains a separate new area to really challenge those who feel they are now way stronger then the main game’s various enemies. We here at Honey’s Anime really loved our time with Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen and we know if you haven’t played this amazing RPG yet you’re missing out.

Apparently in Ciri’s blood lays ancient elven powers that make her a much needed item for the Emperor. Geralt makes the choice to chase down this girl but he will soon land himself in a danger greater than anything he’s ever faced.

The Witcher has become a more popular series than ever and with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt being the latest and best installment, we found it to be a fitting end to our 6 Games Like The Elder Scrolls list. Players who are familiar with The Witcher series know what to expect but we’ll run you by the basic in case you’re a newcomer. Players assume the role of legendary Witcher Geralt and explore a vast landscape filled with quests and dangers to overcome. Like The Elder Scrolls games, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt gives players a nice mixture of how to handle combat in their own ways and gives plenty of enemy variety so the game never gets old. With tons of side quests that bring meaning to the main story in their own ways, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt really feels like a true honest quest and we love that level of immersion here at Honey’s Anime.
