INTRODUCTION / OPENING PARAGRAPH
Too often in the world of video games we take a lot of modern concepts for granted. One of those comes in the form of taking cover behind objects which was actually modernized in a game called WinBack. Released originally for the Nintendo 64 and then seeing a more modern port on the PS2, WinBack is a gaming title that people seem to forget even existed. However, we here at Honey’s Anime never forget some of the more influential titles and thus today we’re honoring WinBack. How do we do that you may ask? Well, simple. We made a 6 Games Like WinBack list for your reading enjoyment.
Now we won’t lie folks, WinBack is incredibly old so we do understand why it might be considered so obscure. Though it’s very important to remember the classics and we knew that finding games similar to WinBack was the best way to go about this. These titles have the same ideals that made WinBack so great but with more modern finesse and obviously stronger technology behind them. From fights on alien worlds using chainsaw themed guns to surviving the zombie apocalypse, our list of games like WinBack will surely give you a better appreciation of how far games have come since its release. Now then let our list of games like WinBack begin.

WinBack’s cover system, while flawed in some ways, was perfected in games like Gears of War. This third person shooter has gamers fighting monstrous enemies with various weapon all while enjoying a dark and mature sci-fi story. Gears of War has been such a successful franchise as many consider it one of the best cover based shooters ever created. With several games released so far and a recent HD collection that has all the Gears of War titles from the older Xbox 360 console, it was a must that we mention Gears of War on our 6 Games Like WinBack list. If you own an Xbox One or Xbox 360, you need to play Gears of War.

Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway continues the franchise with this latest installment once again tasking players with making wise choices as a leader. Every move must be calculated as a mistake in leadership will most likely end in an all too painful Game Over. Similar to WinBack, this third person shooter requires patience as overly quick decisions lead to unnecessary damage and sometimes even more trouble as you are then exposed to more enemy fire. We fully enjoyed Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway and know for those who love the third person genre and games like WinBack—obviously more updated and polished—then you’ll love this military shooter.

There are times where shootouts are unavoidable and like WinBack, you’ll need to be fast to take down enemies before the fill you with bullets. However, Leon is about to learn that this mission will bring him back to the nightmares of Raccoon City when a new virus has been unleashed on the villagers. Leon survived the zombie outbreak of Raccoon city but can he survive this new more evolved outbreak?
WinBack main goal was to be an action heavy third person shooter first and foremost. Sure it had cover based mechanics but players needed to rely on quick reflexes and good aim. Resident Evil 4: HD mimics this idea but with everything being way more focused and stronger in terms of gameplay. Players will have to battle various zombie-like enemies as well as other horrible creatures all while trying to make it out of the village alive. Resident Evil 4: HD is one of our favorite games of all time here at Honey’s Anime and we can always recommend it for those who are looking for solid third person shooter games like WinBack.
5. Lost Planet: Extreme Condition

Though as they begin to heat up different areas they discover an alien race who has been hiding away and now are ready to fight for their land. 150 years have passed and humanity still fights to survive on E.D.N.III and continues to use the T-ENG from the fallen aliens now known as Akrid. Wayne Holden and his father, a group of snow pirates are about to have to fight against not only the Akrid but an enemy who was once considered an ally.
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is like WinBack in the genre but with faster paced combat and obviously an alien enemy over the human ones found in WinBack. Players don’t have a typical health bar but instead have T-ENG which slowly drains as time goes by in the harsh cold environment. If you wish to survive, you’ll need to kill enemies and pick up the fallen energy to continue living. While Lost Planet has had several newer titles released, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is still one of our favorites of the series and we highly recommend it as its pretty affordable seeing as how it’s obviously an older title. If you want quick paced shooting like WinBack but with stronger gameplay mechanics and even some mech combat, you’ll find Lost Planet: Extreme Condition right up your alley.

We end our 6 Games Like WinBack on one of the best examples of cover shooting in the form of Kill Switch. This third person shooter will have you blasting tons of enemies and having to rely on using the environment to avoid taking too much damage. Kill Switch easily was influenced by WinBack as the two games share similar gameplay mechanics are both pretty tough titles to beat. Trust us folks even though Kill Switch released in 2003 we still have found ourselves booting our older systems and trying to play it despite some tough levels. If you’re looking for games like WinBack that harkens to all the great concepts of WinBack, then you’ll need to give Kill Switch a try.
