6 Games Like World of Warcraft [Recommendations]

World of Warcraft is the world's best known MMORPG, and it's been around since 2004, setting a very high standard. To date, no game has been able to take over the world of massively multiplayer online role playing games, quite like WoW did. World of Warcraft has it all. The Horde and Alliance will never find peace it seems. It's a seamlessly connected world with very few invisible walls, and now contains a nice “Pokemon-like” game in the form of pet battles. You can literally travel the world of Azeroth and "collect ‘em all"! But if you're like most people, you blitz to the level cap and raid the high-end content forever until you die, give up the game, or decide to try something new.

World of Warcraft is so popular that it has it's own addiction therapy groups! Blizzard started to notice the subscriber numbers take a nosedive in their "Warlords of Draenor" expansion, and decided to take a different approach in "Legion". It shows no sign of dying out anytime soon, and Blizzard no doubt has more expansions planned. While many people still play the game, some may yearn for something new, after all, it is more than a decade old. Whether you're looking to try something else between expansions, all together, or just try for a little bit just because, below you will find 6 games like World of Warcraft.

Similar Games to World of Warcraft

1. Star Wars: The Old Republic

  • System/Platform: PC
  • Publisher: Electronic Arts, LucasArts
  • Developer: LucasArts, BioWare
  • Release Date: Dec. 20Th, 2011

"SWTOR" as it's come to be known by many, is a living, breathing galaxy. Choose your side and be a rebel, or part of the empire. The Sith have returned to the galaxy, and they seek revenge against the Jedi. As the empire moves to conquer planets, the rebels continue to fight against them. Both sides must overcome challenges, face spectacularly powerful foes, and explore the planets for "datacrons" to become stronger. Both sides must also take to the stars and fend off enemy fleets in space with the aid of your ship. Whoever you choose to be, you are the master of his or her destiny.

Like many MMORPGs you start by joining a faction, choosing a race, choosing a gender, choosing a class, and customizing the look of your character. "World of Warcraft" has two major sides that do battle, and so does "Star Wars: The Old Republic". Both games have a similar Player vs. Player, Certain pvp modes being more similar than others. This online version of the Star Wars universe has very similar controls to WoW. So if you're worried about learning everything all over again with a new game, it's not as hard as it sounds. "SWTOR", like "WoW", also has many end-game raids. If you liked WoW, but want to try something else, "Star Wars: The Old Republic" is a great choice!

2. The Lord of the Rings Online

Something dark is looming over Middle-earth, and it's your job to get to the bottom of it. Fight through hordes of enemies, dungeons with friends, and follow the tracks of the fellowship. You can also take your instrument skills to town and put on a show! You can actually use individual keys on your keyboard to play notes in Lord of the Rings Online.

The Lord of the Rings Online is another MMORPG that has controls very similar to WoW. You don't need to spend hours on end learning how to play! "LOTRO", has a living, breathing world to explore, very similar to WoW. Both online worlds are massive and have very few loading points (except in dungeons and raids). Being based off of Tolkien's books, is a large advantage for "LOTRO". Many would love the chance to freely roam around Middle-earth! There are also characters in the game, like Tom Bombadil, who didn't make it into the movies. If you like World of Warcraft, give this some playtime!

4. The Elder Scrolls Online

  • System/Platform: PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One
  • Publisher: Bethesda Softworks, Zenimax Online Studios, DMM GAMES
  • Developer: ZeniMax Media, Zenimax Online Studios, Bethesda Softworks
  • Release Date: Apr 4, 2014

The Elder Scrolls Online is the online version of Tamriel. You will choose from 3 factions to declare your allegiance to. The Daggerfall Covenant, Ebonheart Pact, and the Aldmeri Dominion all have their advantages. From there, you will create your character and venture off into the world. The graphics are very well done, and that is a breath of fresh air when compared to some other online games. ESO offers a high quality first person mode, and player housing as well. The story itself is indirectly connected with the offline Elder Scrolls games. Your soul has been stolen, and it's your job to get it back!

The Elder Scrolls, like Warcraft, started as an offline game, and now both have online counterparts. Both games had established offline lore before taking their worlds online. Because of this, the lands you travel through feel more authentic and less forced. You will also fight in Player vs Player battles for your factions like in WoW. The maps for pvp in ESO, are super-large compared to WoW, and have more in common with Guild Wars 2. ESO is another controller-friendly game. If you're looking to play something a bit different yet familiar, give ESO a shot.

5. Guild Wars 2

  • System/Platform: Mactintosh, PC
  • Publisher: NCSOFT, Koch Media
  • Developer: ArenaNet
  • Release Date: Aug. 28, 2012

Welcome back to Tyria. It's your job to create a character and hunt down the Elder Dragons who threaten to destroy the world. Guild Wars 2 was one of the first online role playing games that got people to work together without being in a party. In other MMORPG games, people would take other people’s kills and loot, making the game less fun. In Guild Wars 2, there is very little need to worry about any of that. You can roam the world with your character, and out of nowhere, a farm you walk by is attacked by monsters. You and the nearby players now have a job to fend off the creatures! It's a beautiful world, and best of all, there is no monthly fee.

World of Warcraft was around when the original Guild Wars was released for PC. Guild Wars 2 plays very similar to World of Warcraft, but has a lot more instancing. Create parties, explore dungeons, roll out of the way of attacks, and raid with a ton of people on the server! One of the biggest highlights of “GW2” is its player vs player. It is one of the first MMORPG games to make such massive interactive maps for pvp. You can build catapults, battering rams, and take down the walls of a keep to capture it for your server. World of Warcraft has a similar pvp reward structure to GW2. Guild Wars 2 seems to be a bit larger in terms of pvp, however. If you're looking for a good alternative to “WoW” look no further than Guild Wars 2.

6. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

  • System/Platform: PC, Playstation 3, Playstation 4
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Developer: Square Enix
  • Release Date: Aug. 27, 2013

After a very rocky start with the original Final Fantasy XIV, “A Realm Reborn”, fixes nearly all of its issues, years later. Welcome to the beautiful and vast world of Hydaelyn. There are multiple plot points in the game, from taking down the Primal Ifrit, to trying to stop the Garlean Empire. Like most Final Fantasy games (and MMORPG games), there is more than one goal. You can run into quests on your journey, and join in the battle with others to take down foes. Square Enix has also recently implemented a Player vs Player mode, which wasn't around at launch.

Like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has many of WoW's functions. You have skill bars for your spells, you can create macro keys, and you get the best gear by doing high level things. Final Fantasy: A Realm Reborn, however, is a newer game, and the sprawling graphics show it. You can also play “FFXIV: ARR” on Playstation 3 and 4, which provides for easier installation, as opposed to certain computers, which can have compatibility issues. A Realm Reborn lives up to it's name, and it is hard to look away from its beautiful graphics! Give it a shot, especially if you remotely like any of the Final Fantasy games!

While World of Warcraft will continue to go on, there are many other MMORPGs you can try. We love to play with friends online and travel to fantasy worlds. In many ways, traveling to another virtual world with friends and family can be like a mini-vacation! Just be sure to remember to eat food and feed the pets. MMORPGs are all time consuming. The stories will never end in an MMORPG, and at some level, most of us seek adventure. So, get out there and save the world! Did you have any MMORPG games in mind that didn't make the list?
