What You Need to Know:
- There is a certain subgroup of otaku that are into such things as girls... flirting with tentacle creatures. This became obvious with the joyous reaction following the discovery of a parasitic organism that may lead to increased fertility in women.
- There are a few images of it, and it doesn't look pretty. Although the prospects for it actually helping some people are quite real.
Can this thing cause pregnancy?
According to research out of the University of Sheffield in Great Britain that was published in the Journal Science, this is a type of round worm that makes itself at home in the digestive tract.
In Bolivia, a study of 986 women was performed of which 70% were infected with the parasite. One finding of the study was that the parasite works to alter the host's immune system, making it easier to conceive and subsequently become pregnant.
So it's kind of like a fertility treatment...
In that particular region of Bolivia, fertility rates are high, with many women having upwards of 9 children. It is thought that this can be attributed to the parasites, in addition to obvious economic and cultural factors at play.
This effect is being seen in a positive light, as it may lead to new treatments for infertility somewhere down the line.
So the otaku cries of joy that "real life tentacles are here!" are really missing the point. These parasites bring with them the possibility for new artificial infertility drugs that may lead to a robust future for mankind!
