Akihabara is the place where every anime aficionado ventures out to find solace and freedom when life just seems imbalanced. It is the home of all otaku within Tokyo and quite frankly all of Japan. Year after year, many tourists fly in from all over the globe to experience the wonders of Akiba (as the otaku call it), and to see why so many people call it the anime hub. The minute you walk outside of the stations gates, you're immediately greeted by maid cafes to your right and electronic stores to your left. As you keep walking down the left side of the street you'll reach the main section of where it all happens, and you're blown away by all of the many anime hot spots that you'll encounter along the way. While the section of Akihabara isn't entirely big when compared to that of Shibuya, it is the sheer thrill of walking down a road full of memorabilia, and maid cafes that is the most satisfying. We thought we'd share one of our favorite hot spots in Akihabara and that is the @Home Maid Cafe, so be sure to visit it when you arrive!

The Experience
@Home Maid Cafe Food and Drinks - 1st experience
Akihabara is filled with a plethora of cafes to choose from, ranging from the more relaxing Italian-styled cafe, to the more upbeat and vibrant style which we will be discussing in the experience. Whichever you decide on is entirely up to you, but we definitely suggest checking out @Home Maid Cafe since it is one of the more popular cafes in the area. The first thing that you'll most likely see once you walk in are of course the wonderfully dressed maids who will serve you, but also the very pink ambiance. The atmosphere is very bright which allows you to get a glimpse at all the cute details that surround you on the walls and ceiling.
The food and drink are also made to look very adorable with the maids serving you in a moe style, which give special powers to the food that you'll eat. You can choose from a wide assortment of foods such as the cutie puppy curry set, and wash it down with @Home's special cocktail. The anime Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata takes place in the bustling streets of Akihabara where Kirino is ecstatic at all of the sights and sounds. In episode 12, the group of friends make their way to a cafe and indulge in the warm atmosphere along with the cute maid service. While the cafe in the anime looks quite different from @Home, the experience is very much the same where you're treated warm heartedly and can enjoy some entertainment while you're there.
@Home Maid Cafe Games and Photos -2nd experience
You can't really have a maid cafe without having a chance to play games and interact with those who've served you. @Home allows you to choose which maid to play with and from there the two of you are seated. The experience is great because you really get a chance to communicate with the maid and see bits of her personality come out, which makes it more comforting while playing. Furthermore it may even perhaps be a great way for you to practice speaking Japanese since it's a 1-on-1 type of feeling. There are various prizes that you can win via the moe machine which give you a sense of feeling like a child again. It truly is a positive experience once you bring your friends along to bask in all the excitement, and after playing the very moe-styled type games you can then choose to take a photo with the maid you've chosen.
Most photos, as you'll see when you walk in, are posted all over the walls as a reminder of how many people have come through. You can ask for a copy which they provide to you as a memento for your stay, which makes you feel really nice and appreciative of everything. In Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai, Kyousuke and his sister, Kirino, take a visit to Akihabara and indulge themselves in some shopping. Kyousuke decides to take a break and goes to a maid cafe where he is then greeted by a maid, and treated to a moe-styled lunch. Kyousuke didn't seem too pleased when you watch the episode but generally if you're annoyed by your sister, your feelings seem to resonate where ever you go. Nonetheless we highly recommend you take part in their games and activities!
@Home Maid Cafe Live Shows - 3rd experience
You simply can't leave @Home Maid Cafe without experiencing the most thrilling part of it all, which is the live show. This is part of an extra service that @Home conducts occasionally so hopefully when you go the opportunity will present itself. If you're even luckier you may get a chance at them dancing and performing to very cute anime themed soundtracks, which is something we think most anime fans would admire. Not too many maid cafes really provide a well organized show, so being able to see this one in person will truly make your trip to Japan that much more fulfilling. If you've seen Love Live! School Idol Project there are episodes where cafe themed scenarios are created which again provide you with a sense of what to expect. We hope that these experiences light up your eyes to the wonders of what Akihabara Maid Cafes have to offer for everyone of any age.
Additional Info
@Home Maid Cafe is filled to the brim with excitement and various activities to choose from. We can only go through so many of the different choices you have, but we highly suggest going to either location to truly immerse yourself in Japanese style otaku culture. One of the wonderful things that we should add is that if you notify them that it's your birthday, they'll prepare a personal moe-styled cake in your name along with a special birthday song that you can sing along to.
Concluding paragraph
Akihabara will always be the home for everything related to games, anime, and manga and so we always hold that place very close to our hearts. Maid cafes will always continue to prosper because like so many of us anime fans, the fun atmosphere and cheerful attitude of the maids bring out the best in all of us, even on our bad days. The comfortable atmosphere makes you feel at home, while the extra activity of taking photos just allow you to remember all of the good times you had.
