In 4 Goddesses Online, the girls all don virtual avatars—that look pretty much exactly like them—and aim to become the heroes they were chosen to be within the world. Though they might be within a game, our girls of Gamindustri don’t act any different than their real-life counterparts so be prepared for boob jokes and plenty of silly humor. Can Neptune and her friends save 4 Goddesses Online or will 4 Goddesses Online never reach beyond its beta stage thanks to its new players?
Gameplay
In 2010, Idea Factory and Compile Heart unleashed upon the world Hyperdimension Neptunia and even after several years, the series continues to grow. Not only has Hyperdimension Neptunia had an anime release but they’ve also had tons of video games—both spin offs and main games—making it a very popular series. However, as great as the franchise has been some of the spin off titles have fallen to weak gameplay mechanics and missed opportunities here and there. Did this same fate fall onto Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online for the PS4 and PC? Find out in our review of Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online.
First, it’s pretty important that we say don’t expect the usual turn based combat you may know and love from the Neptunia games. Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online plays out more akin to action RPG titles like Sword Art Online Hollow Realization. Players assume the role of Neptune, NepGear, Vert and more from the Neptunia series and take to battles in a real-time action affair. How does this play out you might ask? Well don’t worry we’re getting to that next.
Each of the lovely ladies of the Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online enters battle with various weapons. Neptune for example is armed with a sword and can unleash various magic and sword based attacks all while characters like Noire’s sister Uni uses twin handguns and paves the battlefield with bullets from a distance. There are only 8 characters you will ever have in Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online but all 8 feel unique in terms of style. Though don’t be worried as each character only uses a few buttons to actually do combat, with square being main attack and the shoulder button plus a face button initiate special attacks. It might seem overly simple—and it kind of is—but there is some complexity when bosses come around or tougher enemies in general.
Players who think button mashing will save them in Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online will find a quick death awaiting. Players will need to use dodge and guard timings to survive Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online more tougher battles. While you can switch from any of the girls via the party menu—even during battle—if your primary character falls you’re looking at a return to the main city and must restart the dungeon. That’s why leveling, completing quests and grinding for ingredients to make better gear is an all to important thing in Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online and adds some much-needed RPG elements to make up for the simple action ones.
In terms of graphics we have to say Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online is quite spectacular. Landscapes can be a bit generic in themes—such as open fields and lava dungeons—but they all look incredible thanks to a strong level of detail. The same can be said of the voice acting which has most English voice actresses reprising their roles for the various girls but only a few being changed due to various issues. The solid voice acting helps the comedy aspects and skits really pack a punch and we found ourselves laughing several times out loud. The music isn’t bad but equally won’t blow anyone way which is a bit disappointing but not an issue by any means.
However, in terms of issues, Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online does have several that are quite important to address. The first being the simple combat which might turn some off as battles do become a bit repetitive quite quickly. Equally, while there is online multiplayer where friends can team up on various quests to defeat baddies and get gear, these elements feel artificial and most have claimed on boards online that the only reason to play Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online with others is to net better equipment which removes the idea of Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online being a co-op type game. Our final issue is that while we loved the humor found in Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online a lot of times we also groaned hearing some of the same jokes being used time and time again. Though, let us also state that only a few of these issues we have with Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online can be seen as major ones and most are just our own personal gripes.
Honey's Gameplay Consensus:
For years now Compile Heart has thrown one Neptunia game after another at us and most have come with mixed results. However, we here at Honey’s Anime really enjoyed our time with Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online. The combat at times can be overly shallow and sometimes the repeated jokes can wear thin even for long time fans of the series like ourselves. Despite that, Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online is a thoroughly enjoyable title that will really harken to those who love action RPGs. With stunning graphics, impressive voice acting and tons of hours of gameplay—easily over 20+ hours—Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online will give you plenty of enjoyment for the price of admission. For fans of the Neptunia series and even newcomers, Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online gets a solid recommendation from us here at Honey’s Anime.
Honey's Pros:
Silly but fun story
Tons of great humor
Absolutely gorgeous environments
Great voice acting
Fun action RPG combat
Honey's Cons:
Combat can be a bit simple at times for some players
Some of the comedy gags are reused way too often
Multiplayer feels underused
Honey's Final Verdict:
Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online isn’t the best action RPG we’ve played here at Honey’s Anime but it still is one of our favorite Neptunia games in some while. While many can make the claim that Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online clearly took some inspiration from Sword Art Online games and the story, Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online doesn’t feel like a rip off but more of a funny homage and that is a good thing indeed. The combat can be tons of fun but equally gets repetitive and the same can be said of the humor but if you’re a longtime fan of the series then you’re going to find a lot to love in Cyberdimension Neptunia: 4 Goddesses Online.
