Last year in 2021, CyberConnect2 teamed up with publisher SEGA to release an anime series we dreamed of and prayed for like a fighting game adaptation. Our prayers were heard when Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles was released and was akin to the Naruto Ultimate Ninja fighting games. With vibrant graphics, solid fighting game mechanics, a decent story mode, and tons of unlockables such as characters and art, Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles was a homerun in our books here at Honey’s Anime. We reviewed the game and felt it was overall one of the better fighting game adaptations in recent memory! We did notice the Nintendo Switch was the only console to not get a version of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles but we have good news for you Switch owners! That’s right Demon Slayer fans, Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is now on the Nintendo Switch and we have our review right below to let you know if you should pick this up or run and hide like it is a demon too strong for your slayer abilities.
Let’s Begin Breathing!
It’s quite possible that you’re reading this right now and going “WAIT… THEY MADE A DEMON SLAYER GAME!?!?”. Don’t worry, with our busy schedules this happens more often than we’d like to admit. That’s why this first part of our review will guide you into explaining what Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is and why fans should be excited!
Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is akin to the Ultimate Ninja games—that were all about Naruto—as players will duke it out with other demon slayers in a 3D arena fighter. Players will use various characters and duos to unleash beautiful cel-shaded combos and special moves to whittle their opponent’s health bar to zero. If you’ve played the Ultimate Ninja games, Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is about the same with simple one-button combos, dodging moves, and special attacks/power-up abilities.
There is also a third-person exploration element thrown into Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles which allows fans to explore their favorite areas from the anime and re-learn about Tanjiro’s rise as a demon slayer. The gameplay is pretty perfect in Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles and while the fighting game elements are extremely simple, there’s still enough for fighting game masters to learn and perfect!
Tanjiro and Nezuko Are Portable Now!
Most Nintendo Switch fans have already grown accustomed to having to debate if they should buy a game that is a multi-platform released on their beloved hybrid system or go for the stronger console like PS4, PS5, and/or Xbox Series X/S. To save you the headache of debating this tough question let’s just say nothing was lost in the Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles Nintendo Switch release. While the handheld mode makes the visuals a bit weaker than on docked mode—really only noticeable when a fight pulls away from a battle scene—we really didn’t see any visual degradation in comparison to the other console versions of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles.
Obviously, if you want the best visuals, go for the stronger consoles but we were pleasantly surprised how smooth Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles runs on the Nintendo Switch and how sharp it looks on the OLED version as well!
Do You Need This Version?!
As fans of the Demon Slayer franchise, we aren’t ashamed here at Honey’s Anime to admit we own all versions of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles. We reviewed it originally on the PS4/PS5 but we also own the Xbox, PC, and now, the Nintendo Switch. That’s why despite us loving the portability of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles on the Switch, we will say it isn’t a necessary purchase if you own the game on a previous console. There are no new DLC pieces, as of yet, at least, but this summer we might see some involving Mugen Train and no console-exclusive characters.
This is the same game that was released in 2021 but with all the current updates and DLC now on the Nintendo Switch. So unless you want to brag you’re the biggest Demon Slayer fan in a group of friends—which we admit we have possibly done a few times—you don’t per se need the Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles Switch version.
Why You Want The Nintendo Switch Version
Now, we just told you why you don’t need the Nintendo Switch version of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles and you might find it funny that we’re telling you why you might want it. No, we haven’t lost our minds here at Honey’s Anime but we do want to convince you, especially, those who may have passed up the first release of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles, why the Nintendo Switch/OLED version is the best way to go.
Besides the obvious portable ability of the Nintendo Switch Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles, it feels quite solid on this amazing device. We mentioned the visuals do suffer a bit in handheld mode—even if it’s the OLED version that we own—but on the big screen it looks crisp and runs just as well as the other console giants. The online still is a bit…meh at best but we still think having the ability to take Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles with us on the go or in the office—if your office lets you play games—is a welcome appeal to this version.
What You’re Getting For Full Price
What did surprise us is despite being a year old and on a slightly weaker console, the Nintendo Switch version of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is still full-priced at $59.99. All shocks aside, this still is a pretty solid price for several reasons. Primarily, Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is a pretty big game as it has a deep story mode that covers the entirety of the first season and movie—Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train—which is presented in an adventure mode. On top of that, you’re getting 20+ fighters to play and several costumes for most of them! Essentially, you’re getting your money’s worth and that is always a welcome feeling when buying a game in 2022.
Final Thoughts
Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles on the Nintendo Switch is more of the same but we welcome that honestly. This is a big fighting game adaptation with tons of extras, a decent-sized roster of fighters, some solid fighting game mechanics, and a solid story mode that covers quite a bit of the Demon Slayer narrative. Plus, with the ability to play on the go, Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles on the Nintendo Switch is a must-have for those who missed the original versions or were hoping their Switch would be the perfect home for their Demon Slayer loves.
