Honey-chan loves all things cute and idol Luna Haruna is just that, super cute. Luna Haruna dreamed of singing songs for anime as a small child, singing along with the openings to Sailor Moon. She became obsessed with gothic lolita manga characters and began to collect western-style clothes in junior high. She made her debut in 2011 with her song “Sora wa Takaku Kaze wa Utau” that was used as the second ending song for the Fate Zero anime. She has since been performing theme songs of popular anime series including Sword Art Online, Fate/Zero, High School Fleet, Monogatari, and Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend! Luna Haruna’s voice talents have extended beyond singing; she’s also a voice actress appearing in the anime Urahara as the voice of Rito Sudou. Honey-chan could hardly contain herself as she sat down with Luna Haruna before her performance as part of Anisong World Matsuri at Anime NYC.

Interview with Luna Haruna, Singer Anisong World Matsuri at Anime NYC
Did you really know that you wanted to perform and sing anime songs when you were a child watching Sailor Moon?
Yes! When I was a child, I could feel the power that anisongs had. Just by hearing an anisong, inspirational scenes from the anime come to mind and you can feel all kinds of emotions like joy or sadness. I thought “I want to be someone who can deliver this type of music!”
How did you feel when you were told that you would be making your debut and that “Sora wa Takaku Kaze wa Utau” would be used in Fate Zero?
I was elated, of course! What helped me make my debut was through the Anisong Grand Prix audition, but even though I was a finalist, I did not win. After the audition, I spent a long time wondering if I really could debut. Then, when I was able to set a debut date, I learned that my song was going to be used for the Fate series, which was already popular thanks to the games, and I was very excited.
What attracts you to the gothic lolita fashion?
I really wanted to dress just like Road Kamelot does in “D.Gray-man!” At the time, I was just a second-year middle school student, but I encountered slightly different clothing and that impacted me. The frills and patterns are so detailed, and I think the fact that Japan went and modified the already established western style was something that charmed me.
You are performing as part of Anisong World Matsuri in New York City. What is the most exciting part of stepping on stage in front of a crowd of fans?
It has to be the reactions of the audience. The waving light sticks and everyone singing together makes me so happy. If I can feel the energy from the audience of everyone having a great time, I think my own performance becomes even better.
The video for “Stella Breeze” seems to be simpler than some of your other videos such as “Sora wa Takaku Kaze wa Utau”. Was the simplification of the video, which we loved by the way, a response to you growing as an artist or just the simplicity of the love song?
I showed more of who Luna Haruna is as a person with Stella Breeze. I wrote this song personally, and this work, which became the opening theme song for the anime “Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend. flat”, told the story of the everyday lives and struggles of students. It’s not a story of some fantasy world, so I wanted to reflect that normalcy. However, “Stella Breeze” actually took longer to shoot than “Sora wa Takaku Kaze wa Utau!”
Are you looking to do more voice acting? Is there a kind of heroine that you’d like to play?
Last year, I debuted as a voice actress in the anime “URAHARA” and the story is set in Harajuku in Tokyo. Since I was previously a model for the fashion magazine “KERA,” I was able to get an offer to perform. Still though, I don’t know if I am going to continue to receive voice work, but I would certainly love the chance to work more as a voice actress. I have a slightly deeper voice, so I would love to do darker young boy roles for example.
You obviously were a fan of Sailor Moon growing up, was there another anime that you enjoyed?
I have so many like the Gundam Series, the Inazuma Eleven Series, Fullmetal Alchemist, Osomatsu-san, and more. I like many works that other girls tend to like. I am the type that when I am obsessed with a show, I will watch it over and over. Whenever I am on the plane heading to to an overseas concert, I rewatch shows I have seen countless times! And if it is an anime that I performed a theme song for, you better believe that I check to see when the show is on air!

I’m a journalist, writer, photographer, video producer, social media manager and above all a storyteller. I’m located on the east coast of the United States but travel the world with the love of my life. I’ve been a nerd since birth with a love of history and science. I fell in love with anime, watching ROBOTECH and Venus Wars in the 80s when our only source was secondhand VHS dubs. A crazy new thing called the internet changed that, giving me access to new and amazing anime every day. I love to write for work and pleasure. I’m living the dream of every kid, getting paid to watch anime and loving every subtitled line.
