Jaleco Sports: Goal! - A Nostalgic Kick from the 8-bit and 16-bit Era

Most of you probably weren’t even born back then, but some of us still remember what football games were like before they turned into lootbox fests catering only to online competitors. Back in the day, there were tons of different titles and approaches to the sport, and most of them had their own unique charm, offering countless hours of fun with friends and siblings.

Among the standouts, the Goal! franchise was probably our favorite… and now it’s back in full glory, with both classic games bundled into one awesome package!

Football Unites the World

Yes, that’s actually one of FIFA’s recent slogans (the organization, not the video game series), and it perfectly captures one of the highlights of this new bundle.

Originally developed by Tose and published by Jaleco (both Japanese companies) Goal! (known in Japan as Moero!! Pro Soccer) debuted in 1988. It was later localized for North America and Europe, with slightly different versions released in each region. Thanks to its popularity, a sequel followed in 1992, launching globally. But things weren’t as straightforward as they might seem…

Because the games were released in different regions and on different consoles, there are a number of notable differences—not just in the titles, but in the content itself. For instance, the lineup of national teams varies by version. In the Japanese release of Goal!, Uruguay and the USA are not included; instead, players get Northern Ireland and Scotland. Goal! Two features even more regional variation: the Japanese version includes teams like Colombia, Ghana, and Austria, while the Western release swaps them out for Canada, Mexico, and Venezuela. Meanwhile, the USSR and West Germany are present in the NES version but were omitted from the SNES port.

Fortunately, this new bundle includes all versions of both games, giving players access to every regional team, no matter where they were originally released.

A Perfect Title for Collectors!

Another feature we absolutely loved is the inclusion of all the original cover art and instruction manuals. Back in the '80s and '90s, reading and re-reading those little booklets, or proudly displaying them on your shelf, was a big part of the whole video game experience.

Sure, these games aren’t exactly complex in terms of controls or mechanics—after all, most systems back then only had a couple of buttons to work with. In fact, most of the instructions now feel like plain common sense to today’s players. Still, having access to the original manuals feels oddly refreshing. And best of all, you can switch languages with a single button press.

And What About the Gameplay?

The most notable addition to this bundle is the ability to rewind time at any moment (like in some racing games), whether it’s to stop a goal from being scored, avoid a yellow or red card, or simply get a second chance after completely shanking a shot into the stratosphere.

Was it necessary? Probably not. Does it feel like cheating? Absolutely, and football purists will no doubt see it as a disgrace to the sport. But hey, it’s 100% optional, so no harm done… right? If anything, it’s just a modern safety net for retro frustration.

No one expects games from four decades ago to stand toe-to-toe with modern sensations like EA FC, PES, or even Rematch. But firing up a few Goal! or Goal! Two matches with friends, whether out of nostalgia or curiosity, depending on your age, can still be a blast.

Sure, we don’t see ourselves playing these games non-stop for days, but we genuinely enjoyed re-adapting to the punishing controls and arcade-style gameplay. Plus, there's something charming about scoring goals with national teams from countries that you don’t typically find in other football games, or that don’t even exist anymore. Nevertheless, if you like competing online, you can compete against other players on the monthly leaderboards!

Final Thoughts

Jaleco Sports: Goal!, the remake developed by Sickhead Games and Rock It Games, is one of those bundles we’re just happy to have in our library, ready to launch now and then for a few laughs and a trip down memory lane.

The game is available for Windows PC via Steam and GOG. It's been announced there will be a PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch release later this year.

Hey! I'm Rod, and when I'm not watching anime or playing video games I'm probably writing about them, but I'm also a graphic and web designer, and I even published a comic book and worked like 4 years for a well-known MMORPG. Curiously, my favorite series are quite different from each other, so I'm still trying to understand what I really like in an anime...
