One Piece is a global franchise that still continues to rock the world with its remarkable storytelling about friendship, overcoming adversities, and working together to achieve success. The video game titles have always been a blast to play not only because it incorporates the very action-oriented musou gameplay, but because many of these titles allow both new and veteran players to be captivated by the lore. One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 was the last title in the series that was released back in 2015 and so it has been several years since fans were able to get a taste of the game. At the Bandai Namco Pre-TGS event we had the opportunity to sit down and play One Piece Pirate Warriors 4, the latest in the Pirate Warriors series and perhaps a highly anticipated title for many.
About One Piece Pirate Warriors 4
One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 takes place in a brand new world called Wano Country and follows Luffy on his journey to seek out new treasures, and to get rid of the enemy forces that stand in his way. Anyone who keeps up with the series will most likely become familiarized with the story that takes place within the game, but many will also find some intriguing surprises along the way. According to producer Tsuzuki-san, there will be a brand new episode that will be featured in the game so please look forward to it!
More Pirates, More Fun (Gameplay)
One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 is going to be jam-packed with a lot of cool new features with one notable one being that now, buildings and other objects in the area can now be destroyed. In previous iterations all of the stage designs only allowed for players to roam around and tackle enemies in their way, but now there’s a lot more destructive action being implemented to give players a more impactful experience. Another cool feature that we dabbled with was the aerial musou gameplay which now allows you to perform combos while in the air, giving you an added dimension for combo extensions from the ground. This was hands down our favorite addition to the series because for so long, we’ve wished for the ability to extend our combos into the air for maximum damage and now our wishes were answered! Movesets are way more diverse than ever before, such as Luffy now using attacks such as the Gigant Thor Axe and Gomu Gomu no Hanabi! Characters can now use up to 4 special attacks which can be leveled up as you progress through the game. Another cool introduction to One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 are giant characters (take Big Mom for example) who are drastically larger than the majority of the cast and deal a lot more damage than usual. No word has been said as to whether or not they'll be playable but that will likely be announced at a much later time. For now, we enjoyed playing with Carrot and watch her bounce around kicking arse! Her playstyle is all about creating openings and then attacking swiftly with powerful close range strikes. She's actually quite the fun character to use and we recommend players familiar with her to really hop around and enjoy the action! Zoro, at least to us, felt very much like before but with a more robust catalogue of attacks to kill the enemy with. His animations definitely looked and felt very fluid which is a huge step forward from Pirate Warriors 3 where at times he felt a little stiff.
Time to Customize!
One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 introduces yet another fun feature for fans to enjoy and that’s the option to now customize their favorite characters in their own unique way. We didn’t get a chance to dive deeper into the customization system but from the costumes that we glanced at during gameplay, it seems that players will have some form of freedom in terms of dressing characters up in certain ways, and we assume you’ll be able to unlock more items as you progress through the game. There are over 40 playable characters in the game which is massive compared to past iterations and so we’re pretty stoked to see just who we get to play with once the full game releases in 2020.
Final Thoughts
Some other notable additions to the game include the introduction of Yonko Kaido, who is one of the “Beasts” of the 4 emperors. We can’t divulge too much information as we don’t want to spoil the story for anyone looking to play the game or even watch the show, but we can say with certainty that players will get to see his involvement in the series at some point throughout the story. As per tradition with most One Piece Pirate Warrior titles, there will be a recap for new players so that they can keep up with the current arc, and stay familiarized with what’s taking place. Multiplayer features will also be implemented and although not much information was shared with us, Tsuzuki-san did point out that these features will bring back memories of Pirate Warriors 3. With an entirely brand new UI created for a more robust experience for players, we’re thrilled for the release of One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 and so should you!
