Special Collection ‘Hanafuda’
“Hanafuda”, a once forbidden game back in the Azuchi-Momoyama period (… 1600 a.d.)
Hanafuda is said to have derived from “Tenshō Karuta”, a popular card game of the time.
Karuta was popular as a gambling tool among the common folk, and in no time, the samurai were also hooked to the game. However, the shogunate banned it for the next 200 years.
The cards were treated as gambling tools if they had numbers on them, so a deck of cards without numbers was created. This was the birth of Hanafuda. Each of the months are represented by four cards with flowers printed on them. People were fascinated by the beauty of the patterns and the wondrous combinations of the cards.

Designed by the up-and-coming artist Reilly. illustration, the historical cards are recreated as collectible, one-and-only modern art, “Hanafuda”, featuring the Otaku Coin logo.
