You are all cordially invited to the event of the year, a special moment in the lives of not only our favorite characters but ourselves too! Of course, we’re talking about Sekaiichi Hatsukoi: Propose-hen, an OVA that has fans across the fujoshi realm screaming their gratitude to the Yaoi gods.
Sekaiichi Hatsukoi: A Fujoshi’s First Love
It’s no surprise that the Sekaiichi Hatsukoi franchise has fans all across the globe because, after all, it's been our first contact with the BL world for a lot of us. It all started with the manga but, soon enough, the anime adaptation followed. Sekaiichi Hatsukoi became one of the most beloved series for anyone who is into shounen-ai and yaoi, and for good reason; the characters, the story, it’s all so entertaining!
Of course, we couldn’t help but fall in love with Masamune Takano, the grumpy editor in chief of the Emerald department at a somewhat “well-known” publisher. He's everything that a woman—or man—could wish for: exceptional at his job, extremely good looking, and caring. Of course, he takes his time to show his affectionate side, but we definitely can see how much he loves his partner in everything he does for him. On the other hand, we have Ritsu Onodera, with his boyish looks and fierce determination to never fall in love again. But no matter how hard he tries, we all know what happens when Ritsu transfers to Masamune’s department, right? Sparks fly and love blossoms like a beautiful Spring flower! Well… Kind of.
It takes some time, but Ritsu learns to trust Masamune and is finally able to see that his love for him is real. Masamune has it hard convincing his lover that what happened between them in the past was a misunderstanding, but with patience (and tough love) he is able to hold Ritsu once again.
All Our Boys Are Back!
One of the many good things about Sekaiichi Hatsukoi is that it focuses on several couples, so we get more love stories… and more lovey-dovey moments! Besides the main duo, we have three other couples, men who either work with Masamune and Ritsu or who are close to them.
Shouta works as an editor in the same department as Ritsu, so they are usually seen together, talking about how much they despise Masamune’s spartan ways. The problem with Shouta is that he falls in love at first sight without knowing a thing about the other person’s personality. That’s why, when he falls head over heels for Kou, Shouta has second thoughts and starts to pull away from him. Kou is determined to never let go of his lover, so he does everything he can to convince Shouta that his love is real.
Then we have Chiaki, a manga artist working for the Emerald department, and his childhood friend, Yoshiyuki, who happens to be his editor. Chiaki is used to being around Yoshiyuki, and he even considers him to be a close friend, but after some confusing episodes, Chiaki realizes that he has feelings for Yoshiyuki. Last but not least, there’s Takafumi, who had feelings for Masamune and helped him after Ritsu broke his heart. Takafumi is hellbent on showing his friend that his love for him is real, but Masamune makes it clear that Ritsu is the only one for him. Brokenhearted, Takafumi crosses paths with Zen, and his own love story begins!
Join them in the after-party
What happens when an employee from another department gets married and invites our boys over for the after-party? Weddings are a special event, and emotions tend to run wild, and knowing some of the guests as we know them, something crazy is bound to happen.
After seeing the happy couple exchange their vows, Masamune starts to get ideas on how he wants to spend the rest of his life with his beloved Ritsu. Kou, however, is more than convinced that Shouta is the one for him, and so he starts planning how to show that his love for him is getting stronger with each passing day. Takafumi doesn’t want to let the wedding hype get to his head, so he tries to act cool... but of course, Zen won’t stop teasing him. The wedding frenzy is getting to everybody’s head, and we love it!
Final Thoughts
It would be amazing to see all the boys we love and care about finally getting married, but we know that’s too much to ask for. Maybe in a future OVA, or how about a movie? For the time being, we are just happy to have them back! Let us all thank the yaoi gods for this gift, and hope we won’t have to wait another six long years for a new Sekaiichi Hatsukoi anime or OVA.
