A first-year high school student who joins the shogi club. He has a crush on the only other member of the club and upperclassman, Urushi Yaotome. Ayumu is a beginner, but vows to himself that when he beats Urushi in a shogi match, he will tell her how he feels. He has a poker face and doesn’t show his emotions easily, but whenever he talks to Urushi, he is always straightforward with his words, making her blush.

A second-year high school student who claims to be the president of the shogi club. Every day she struggles to get Ayumu Tanaka, the other member of the shogi club, to admit his love for her, but she is thwarted by all of his counterattacks which have her blushing. Apparently she’s a strong shogi player, but is awfully weak against Ayumu’s “attacks!”
