Romance during the summer is quite infamous for being a short-lived experience. Despite how hot and heavy a relationship can get, once the summer season ends the relationship tends to go with it. Not so surprising, anime has also captured this element we’ve dubbed as a “summer fling” and we gathered the most memorable we could find! Time to enjoy another list that may make your heart get a bit heated with a slew of emotions!
5. Rin Tsuchimi and Lisianthus Eustoma from Shuffle!
Rin Tsuchimi was put into a rather odd situation in the world of Shuffle! Despite being quite human, two various powerful beings—one from the world of demons the other from a land of gods—made Rin a potential groom for their two daughters. Lisianthus Eustoma—Sia—was one of these possible brides for Rin and the two did have quite an adventure when they ended up shipwrecked on an island. Rin and Sia thought they were doomed and, together, they started to make a strange life for themselves.
As the “days” passed, Rin and Sia found a romance blossoming between them on their little island and the two grew extremely close. Rin even made some bold claims that showed he was willing to be there for Sia in more than one way! However, as the two were about to “seal the deal” Primula walked over to them showing the two lovebirds they were actually just on a less populated part of the island. It may not have lasted for long but Rin and Sia shared some interesting summer moments together that could have led to a truly long relationship!
4. Kikuhiko and Miyokichi from Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen (Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju)
The days of World War 2 are notorious for being brutal and filled with painful memories for both soldiers and those living during it. Two lovers—Miyokichi and Kikuhiko—nevertheless tried to make a romance happen near the end of the war but their on and off fling was doomed to end near the summer’s end. Making matters worse, Miyokichi would end up pregnant during this time and later bare a child. Sadly, the two lovers never reunited and the only lasting legacy was made from a summer of tears and heartache.
3. Kaito Kirishima and Ichika Takatsuki from Ano Natsu de Matteru (Waiting in the Summer)
Kaito Kirishima’s summer was quite explosive in the romance series Ano Natsu de Matteru. When an alien ship nearly kills Kaito, he finds himself revived by a human girl—named Ichika Takatsuki—who in reality is from another planet. Despite tons of summer drama, the two find a love sparked between them and we even see a passionate kiss signifying the start of what should be an amazing romance! However, their summer passion is snuffed out when Ichika is forced to return to her planet to avoid a galactic incident. Their summer relationship dies out during Ichika’s departure but as we know from the epilogue, the two reunite in the future and rekindle their love.
2. Ruri Gokou and Kyousuke Kousaka from Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai (My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute)
Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai—Oreimo for short—was quite a bizarre romance-comedy that aired back in 2010. Despite the incest-focused story, our main protagonist—Kyousuke Kousaka—does find a normal relationship with his sister’s friend Ruri Gokou. While Ruri is far from “normal”, the two find themselves in a romantic relationship that heat their summer up! Unfortunately, Kyousuke couldn’t find himself not thinking about his sister and Ruri ended up breaking off their relationship. We hated seeing these two go separate ways but it was a romance that showed the beauty—and cruelty—of what happens when summer ends and with it, a passionate relationship.
1. Kyon and Yuki Nagato from Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu (The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan)
Acting as a spin-off of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya), Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu follows a different version of our “alien robot” girl. Nagato, in this story, is quite normal—aside from her shyness and book-loving attitude—and ends up falling in love with Kyon as their school days go by. After some tragic events that cause Yuki to lose herself for a bit, the two grow further apart and seemed destined to not go forward as a couple. Making matters worse though, Yuki does eventually regain her memories of the confession to Kyon but our main man doesn’t tell her his feelings by the show’s ending. This summer fling feels a bit one-sided as the two didn’t officially become a couple but their love was obvious for the viewers and definitely became a fling once the summer wrapped up.
Final Thoughts
Summer can be quite brutal beyond the pains of the scorching sun and desperate need for air conditioning. When love occurs during the summer, the passion stays alive but not always permanently. Summer flings are hard to enjoy in real life and sometimes even worse when watching in an anime series! Do you know of any summer flings we missed on our list?
