Of course animation is important but moreso is the story. If you have good animation but bad characters, it mars the whole experience.

Glossing over that droll, I can see why some things were chosed and I can understand why the story makes sense at #1. If you cannot understand the anime, it doesn't matter how good it looks; it's still crap.
