Natsu Dragneel (Fairy Tail)
Just as red hair for anime girls are usually a sign that they would be memorable, red hair for anime boys/anime guys is practically a sign that they will be awesome. Red, after all, is one of Japan’s most prominent and respected colors, with the country being called the Land of the Rising Sun. In basic symbolism, red is a notable color too, referring to the unyielding desire of the heart and its passionate pursuit of excellence. Of course, anime, with all its layers, uses the color in its characters really well.
So, without further adieu, and since we already published the list of the Top 10 Anime Girls with Red Hair, it only makes sense that we do a male version of the list, here is your Top 10 Anime Boys/Guys with Red Hair!
10. Sōma Yukihira - Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: April 2015 - September 2015
The 15-year-old cooking genius Soma stands at the 10th place in this list. With skills far beyond his years and unrivaled creativity in cooking Soma is arguably the most formidable cook in the entire series. Known for being as volatile and driven as the red of his hair, Soma never backs down from a challenge. Even in instances or situations where he is at a distinct disadvantage, the red-haired Soma never gives up, usually coming up with dishes that are downright incomparable.
For the fire in his spirit that simply refuses to go down, Soma makes it to our list!
9. Renji Abarai - Bleach
- Episodes: 366
- Aired: October 2004 - March 2012
Yet another character that immortalized his name in anime for being such a ridiculously cool character, the tattoo-ridden Renji is one of Bleach’s most notable personalities. Though carefree and cocky at times, he has been portrayed in the anime to be quite an eccentric character, with his moods varying from being clueless and funny to dark and depressed. He can be quite serious though, especially when it comes to protecting those he sincerely considers precious.
For his dynamism and his awesome nature, Renji is our list’s Number 9!
8. Gaara - Naruto
- Episodes: 220
- Aired: October 2002 - February 2007
Also in our list is Naruto’s most notable and beloved redhead, Gaara. Born prematurely, the young ninja is a little bit short in stature. What he lacks in size is more than made up for by his power, however, as his techniques are considered extremely powerful. Initially hating the world for not showing him a morsel of love during his young life, Gaara began opening up and becoming a lot more likable after his defeat in the hands of Naruto, who fought tooth and nail for the sake of protecting those he loved, despite having a very painful past.
As one of Naruto’s most loved characters, with power that far exceeds that of an average ninja, and serving as almost another antithesis to the series’ main character, Gaara definitely deserves a spot here.
7. Hanamichi Sakuragi - Slam Dunk
- Episodes: 101
- Aired: October 1993 - March 1996
Hanamichi Sakuragi may know nothing about basketball when the series started, but his raw talent and physical prowess soon earned him a spot in the starting lineup of Shohoku. Tall and imposing, Sakuragi spent his young days as a bully, until a chance encounter with a young girl who loves basketball encouraged him to try out the sport as well. Though his stubborn and cocky attitude gets in the way of his games at times, no one in the series could deny the sheer athleticism within Sakuragi.
Even with his inexperience, he was considered as one of the best rebounders and strongest members in the team, even to the point when he can serve as an able substitute of the team captain, Akagi. Modeled after 90’s Chicago Bulls star Dennis Rodman, Sakuragi is one redhead to remember.
6. Lavi - D. Gray Man
- Episodes: 103
- Aired: October 2006 - September 2008
Also in this list is a man who was originally slated to be the main character of another series, Lavi. With spiky dark red hair, handsome features, and an eyepatch above his right eye, Lavi has garnered a pretty large fanbase. His attributes lie far beyond his looks, however, as he is one of the most formidable Exorcists in the organization, wielding a powerful size-shifting hammer, which he calls Ōzuchi Kozuchi.
For being a lovable character with an awesome personality, together with skills and looks to kill, Lavi is undoubtedly one of anime’s most awesome redheads.
5. Mikoto "Red King" Suou - K
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: October 2012 - December 2012
One thing that is pretty much a given when a character is given red hair in anime is plain, old badassery. In this anime, one character stands as the epitome of that thought, the Red King, Mikoto Suou. Having the ability to control fire, he is the leader of the Red Clan, HOMRA. He is also very calm and composed, almost never showing a break in his rock-solid composure.
Apart from his power and extremely cool demeanor, Mikoto is also an avid smoker, often seen in the anime with a cigarette on hand. For his sheer badass nature, and for his uncomfortably good looks (I’m speaking as a boy/guy here. I mean, I’m totally straight, but well... lol.), this boy/guy definitely deserves a spot in this list.
4. Hisoka - Hunter x Hunter
- Episodes: 148
- Aired: October 2011 - September 2014
Nicknamed the Magician, the deadly Hisoka is one of anime’s most notable redheaded antiheroes. A whimsical liar who literally gets aroused in anticipation of battling a powerful enemy, the unorthodox Hisoka is one of Hunter x Hunter’s most dangerous characters. As a fighter, he lusts for the thrill of killing powerful fighters in combat, and as such has helped the anime’s protagonists to escape from fatal situations, just so he could kill them when they have reached their full potential.
Though he prefers to live and work alone, he does cooperate with other people when his interests are compromised though these relations are strictly for the sake of convenience alone. Nevertheless, for his sheer insanity, his unsoundness of mind, and his deadly and dark tactics, Hisoka is one redheaded anime figure that one can never forget.
3. Shanks - One Piece
- Episodes: Currently airing
- Aired: October 1999 - ongoing
Of course, near the top of our list is the man who inspired One Piece’s Luffy to be a pirate, Shanks! Presently the captain of the Red Hair Pirates, Shanks was also a former member of the legendary Roger Pirates, the only group known to have successfully conquered the Grand Line. Apart from this, he was also the one who found the Gomu Gomu no Mi fruit, which was eventually eaten by Luffy, who considers him as his role model.
In a way, one can say that without Shanks, there will never have been any Luffy. There would never have been any One Piece, either. For this fact alone, this awesome redheaded pirate stands at a proud Number 3 in our list.
2. Kurama - Yu Yu Hakusho
- Episodes: 112
- Aired: October 1992 - January 1995
At Number 2 is the man who arguably caused a massive surge in female anime viewership back in the 90’s, Yu Yu Hakusho’s Kurama. Originally a demon who escaped to the human world, Kurama is known to be the most cunning, intellectual, and analytical member of the main characters in the anime. He is also very delicately-featured, a true bishounen of the 90’s, which causes characters to mistake him for a female.
Despite his demeanor, however, Kurama can also be pretty ruthless. With the strength of an S-Class Demon in his Yoko form, he was portrayed to be very cruel, vindictive, and merciless. This was prominently shown in his fight with Karasu in the semi-final rounds of the Dark Tournament, where he sadistically toyed with his opponent before brutally killing him. For his sheer power and darkness, Kurama is our Number 2 redhead.
1. Kenshin Himura - Rurouni Kenshin
- Episodes: 94
- Aired: January 1996 - September 1998
At the top of our list is none other than the humble wanderer, Kenshin Himura. A master swordsman of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu style, Kenshin is one redhead that one must never cross. Even if Kenshin lives as a man who has promised himself to never kill again, he nevertheless draws his unique reverse-edged sword without any hesitation for those people that he truly loves.
Of course, the fact that he used to be Japan’s most feared manslayer, Battousai, also adds more points for Kenshin. In fact, his inner struggle between the peace-loving Kenshin and the bloodthirsty Battousai has been heralded as one of anime’s greatest characterizations. With a lovable personality, a background story to die for, and skills so well-balanced that it puts other anime swordsmen to shame, Kenshin Himura is our Number 1 male anime redhead.
