In every grand story ever told, in every epic poem ever written, lies the flaring of love and affection within the hearts of two people who love each other. Of course, for the theme of love to be properly explored by a narrative, the story must be able to be driven by a pair that is well-developed and equally well-rounded.
In anime, couples who are masterfully created have stood the test of time, from classics in the 60’s to modern classics such as Tomoya and Nagisa of Clannad. For this list, let us look at some memorable anime couples who graced our screens during the previous year.
10. Kiyoshi x Chiyo – Prison School
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 2015 – September 2015
You may think that it’s quite surprising to find a pair from Prison School in this list. Well, that’s not really a surprise. After all, despite being a runaway success this past year, it is nonetheless an ecchi anime that involves a lot of very crude concepts. Despite this, however, it still manages to tell a pretty fair story, and one of the best ones it tells is the budding story of Kiyoshi and Chiyo.
Being the main character, it is almost expected that Kiyoshi would fall in love with someone through the course of the series. In this case, he falls for a girl who is cut a block away from the series’ iconic dominatrix-esque female characters. For being a breath of fresh air in an anime like Prison school, this couple take a spot on our list.
9. Hikigaya x Yukino – My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO!
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: April 2015 – June 2015
Sometimes, couples don’t really get along at first. Thus, it is only after a certain period of time has passed that they begin to realize just how much they care for each other. This exact theme is played out very well in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO!, as Hikigaya and Yukino do not really get along all the time. Despite this, however, their dynamic improves and evolves as the series progresses.
Though their affection for each other only appears every now and then, it is undeniable that there is definitely something going on with Hikigaya and Yukino. That iconic scene in Episode 11, for one, shows just how intense these two characters already feel for each other.
8. Akito x Leila – Code Geass: Akito the Exiled
- Episodes: Movies 4
- Aired: July 2012 - ongoing
Some of the most beautiful pairings in literature come in the form of characters who share a significant amount of experience, positive or negative, in their past. Such is the case with Akito and Leila of Code Geass: Akito the Exiled, two characters who, during the course of the plot, develop their relationship as they start knowing more and more about each other.
What makes their story and pairing so compelling is the fact that they are two people who are caught in the middle of a conflict that goes far beyond their control. Despite this, we viewers get to see them evolve, eve caring for each other. With the release of the last chapter of this story next year, one can only hope that Akito and Leila’s story ends in a worthy fashion.
7. Mizuki x Nagisa – Classroom Crisis
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: July 2015 – September 2015
This new sci-fi anime with a twist of slice of life drama is one of the gems of 2015, featuring a story with rich characters set against a very unique backdrop. Though the love story in the anime is pretty much a three-way affair, it is the development of two of the three main characters, Mizuki and Nagisa, that really shines.
Their love story fully culminates in the anime’s eleventh episode when Nagisa finally breaks down in front of Mizuki. The young mechanic, with feelings for the young executive, comforts him, and they share a passionate kiss in one of the best-directed sequences in recent anime history.
6. Tomoe x Nanami – Kamisama Hajimemashita
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: January 2015 – March 2015
Also a part of this list is a pair that has won the hearts of many due to their quirky dynamic. Tomoe and Nanami may be quite different, but their qualities complement each other. Plus, though they do not show it at first, both actually cares very much for the welfare of the other. Through the course of the series, the couple decides to break the taboo of a human and a demon falling in love with each other.
What makes this couple really endearing is the fact that both of them are strong-willed characters with relatively strong personalities. So much that they end up clashing at times. Despite this, however, they do go really well, with one bringing out the best in the other.
5. Asahi x Youko – Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: July 2015 – September 2015
Sometimes, love is all about accepting and embracing what is different about our significant others. This particular concept is something that was portrayed really well in Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa, one of the lighthearted yet intuitive romance/supernatural anime that was released in 2015.
It is this theme, however, which makes the love story between the anime’s two main leads, Asahi and Youko, so endearing to viewers. After all, what part of a love story between a man and a beautiful half-vampire can ever be anything less than engaging? Though the progression of their story was a bit conventional in some aspects, their interactions are something that are truly notable.
4. Yamada x Shiraishi – Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: April 2015 – June 2015
One of the most prominent themes about couples is the delicate harmony that exists between two people of extremely differing personalities. In this anime, the two main characters are polars apart, yet for some reason, they find a common ground that enables them to discover and bring out what is best in the other.
Supernatural elements and the fact that Yamada’s power actually entails him to kiss the other witches in the anime, there is no doubt that the budding love story between the delinquent Yamada and the beautiful, bullied, brilliant Shiraishi is something that is, despite its conventional nature, still a breath of fresh air.
3. Zen x Shirayuki – Akagami no Shirayukihime
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 2015 – September 2015
Of course, couples who are divided by boundaries that exist between them have been a recurring theme in love stories since the dawn of literature itself. in 2015, viewers were treated to the story of Shirayuki, a beautiful, headstrong girl who finds herself falling for a man far beyond her reach. As the series progresses, however, her feelings are fully returned by the man she has fallen for, the handsome prince Zen.
What makes this particular pair very memorable is the fact that they bring out the best in each other. Though their feelings are not as overt as one might want during the course of the anime’s first season, their kiss on Episode 10 signifies tons of feelings currently swirling within the hearts of the anime’s two main leads.
2. Isla x Tsukasa – Plastic Memories
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: April 2015 – June 2015
There are just some love stories that have predetermined tragic endings. Despite the promise of an emotional roller coaster ride, however, viewers still find themselves unable to take themselves away from delving into the plot. This is the very concept behind the world’s first theaters, where tragedy reigned for generations before the advent comedy, tales which end without inciting catharsis.
This is the very case with Plastic Memories. From the initial reveal, viewers are made aware of the fact that Isla’s time is limited, and that her relationship with Tsukasa will be anything but short-lived. Regardless of this, however, those who have witnessed their relationship as it blossomed through the series can attest to the fact that their development was very well done.
1. Takeo x Yamato – Ore Monogatari!
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: April 2015 – September 2015
Sometimes, love is found in the unlikeliest of places, involving the unlikeliest of people. In fact, love itself seems a very deconstruction of human emotion, triggering reactions that otherwise could very well be considered irrational and illogical. This very factor, however, makes love what it is - a genuine mess of emotions that ultimately trigger real feelings of happiness.
This is the very form of love that Ore Monogatari! was able to portray so well. The anime was able to accomplish this by a simple deconstruction of its main male lead, who outward appearance betrays the heart that lies within. As the anime progresses and the relationship of Takeo and Yamato are fully brought into focus, viewers could not help but cheer for these two characters, whose struggles and development as a couple is matched by few in the world of anime.
This rounds off our list of the best anime couples in 2015. If you have any other couples you feel deserve a special mention, please do state them in the comments section below!
