Many of these girls are determined, and prepared to do what they must to achieve their goals. 8. Elizabeth Liones from The Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Taizai)
- Episodes: 24
- Air Date: Oct. 2014 – Mar. 2015
Though there have been many different portrayals of the “seven deadly sins” throughout history, Nanatsu no Taizai offers one of the most interesting takes on the idea. When the Holy Knights of Britannia plot to overtake the country, Elizabeth Liones, third princess of the kingdom, sets out to find help. She decides to search for the legendary group of knights known as the “Seven Deadly Sins” – a group that supposedly turned against their country long ago. With only rumors to guide her, Elizabeth sets out to find these dangerous knights, but when she does begin to find them, she soon learns that they are nothing like what she had heard, and her world will quickly change! Will Elizabeth be able to save her kingdom? And will she uncover the truth about the Seven Deadly Sins?
Elizabeth Liones is one of the bravest and most determined long-haired girls on our list. She starts her journey essentially on her own, setting out to save her family, her kingdom, and to bring about justice in the world. And she does it without any prior knowledge or experience! Elizabeth hears rumors about the most powerful, deadly and dangerous knights in the land, and instead of fearing them, she tries to find them to convince them to help her. 7. Sagiri Izumi from Eromanga Sensei (Eromanga-sensei)

An anime that is still currently airing, Eromanga-sensei centers on Masamune Izumi, a young light novel author. Masamune wants nothing more than to spend time with his sister Sagiri, but she is a shut-in who hasn’t left her room in a year. Hence why Masamune is surprised when he discovers that his perverted light novel illustrator, known as “Eromanga,” is actually his sister! Their relationship will never be the same…
While Sagiri is a shut-in who doesn’t seem to display much personality at first, her online alter-ego of Eromanga is bursting with creativity and talent. Her relationship with her brother is strange, even disconcerting at times, but she still deserves to be included on our list because of her surprising star potential. Although no one knows that Eromanga is actually Sagiri, the young girl is quite popular on the web. She is also caring toward her brother, helping him with his light novels even when he had no idea it was her! Sagiri is certainly full of surprises.
6. Shiro from No Game No Life
- Episodes: 12
- Air Date: Apr. 2014 – Jun. 2014
Siblings Sora and Shiro prefer video games to the lousy real world, spending most of their time gaming under the legendary name “Kuuhaku.” When the duo is thrust into an unknown world called Disboard, they meet Tet, the god of games. Sora and Shiro quickly discover their new goal – unite the sixteen races of Disboard, defeat Tet and become the new gods of this world. But what might the siblings have to give up in order to achieve that?
Shiro is the genius of the two siblings when it comes to video games. When it comes to logic and intellect, she is definitely the best. Her one downfall is in trying to understand human emotion, something that Shiro will rely on her brother Sora for. Shiro is extremely close to Sora, looking out for him when she can. This long-haired cutie deserves to have a spot on our list – she is most certainly a unique and interesting character!
5. Aqua from KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekei ni Shukufuku wo!)
- Episodes: 10
- Air Date: Jan. 2016 – Mar. 2016
One of the funniest anime to date, KonoSuba follows the story of Kazuma Satou, a reclusive high school student who dies embarrassingly on his way back from buying a game. Kazuma awakens to find himself before a goddess named Aqua. She offers Kazuma two options: continue on to heaven, or be reincarnated into a fantasy world. Kazuma chooses the latter, and is given the option of one gift to help him on his quest. He chooses Aqua, but quickly regrets his decision – Aqua is utterly useless!
Aqua is an important addition to this list, although she may not seem like it. While she doesn’t have all the talents and skills Kazuma was hoping for, Aqua can still resurrect people from the dead, purify water, and use strong spells against demons and undead. She may act somewhat stupid at times, but she has a good heart and tries her best. Aqua is great comedic relief in a world that can often take itself too seriously.
4. C.C. from Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch)
- Episodes: 25
- Air Date: Oct. 2006 – Jul. 2007
Lelouch Lamperouge, an exiled prince of Britannia, is caught in the middle of the war between his former homeland and the Japanese forces. When he is rescued by an unusual girl named C.C., she gives him the “Power of Kings,” also known as Geass. Together with a masked man named Zero, Lelouch takes this power for his own use to get revenge upon Britannia.
C.C. is probably one of the most unique individuals on our list, being an immortal girl with the ability to bestow the Geass on others. She has lived through many centuries, wars and destruction all across the globe, and has been experimented on by Britannia. Even though C.C. has become detached and hardened because of her experiences, she still enjoys little moments in life and finds ways to connect. She grows attached to Lelouch, and is obsessed with pizza, ordering it every time she can get her hands on Lelouch’s credit card. There is a reason that everyone loves C.C., and it’s not just because of her Geass.
3. Olivier Mira Armstrong from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
- Episodes: 64
- Air Date: Apr. 2009 – Jul. 2010

Along the way, they will discover new friends and allies, as well as a dark secret concerning the well-being of their entire nation. Will the Elric brothers ever get their true bodies back?
General Olivier Mira Armstrong rules the northernmost fortress of Briggs with a sure hand. Often called the “Ice Queen” by her soldiers, Olivier is fierce and formidable indeed, taking on each challenge that might appear steadfastly. While she is fond of her soldiers, caring for them in her way, she also has full confidence in their ability to find their own way. In addition, Olivier Armstrong is quite intelligent – she becomes one of the few characters who discover the truth about the nation early on, and plots behind the scenes while working in the most dangerous place in the capital. A beauty with a heart of steel to match her sword, Olivier is one lady you do not want to mess with!
2. Asuna Yuuki from Sword Art Online
- Episodes: 25
- Air Date: Jul. 2012 – Dec. 2012
The players of the first big MMORPG, Sword Art Online, have been trapped inside the video game world with only one way out – beat the game! The game has yet another twist, in that if players die in the game they will die in real life as well. As players’ initial surprise turns to fear, one Kazuto Kirigaya (called Kirito in-game) determines to help try to defeat the game’s 100 levels. Kirito must cooperate with his fellow players to win the game, while battling emotions, struggle and loss along the way. Will Kirito and his friends make it out alive?
Asuna Yuuki is the main heroine from SAO, and well-known by pretty much everyone who watches anime. She leads the Knights of Blood, the strongest guild in the game, and is known by many as the “Lightning Flash” for her insanely quick sword skills. However, she is also gifted in other random talents, such as cooking, and is well liked by all her friends and subordinates. Asuna certainly deserves a spot on this list, for her strength, compassion, generosity and kindness, as well as her beauty.
1. Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail
- Episodes: 175
- Air Date: Oct. 2009 – Mar. 2013
In the land of Fiore, magic is commonplace and important, both for the regular people going about their daily lives, as well as the many guilds that thrive across the land. Of all the guilds, Fairy Tail stands out from the rest. Lucy Heartfilia dreams of becoming a great mage and joining this infamous guild. When Lucy is abducted, she is saved by an unusual mage named Natsu and his flying cat Happy. The good news? Natsu and Happy are a part of her dream guild! Natsu then helps Lucy get into Fairy Tail, where she and her newfound family will fight evil, laugh, cry and adventure together.
Erza Scarlet claims our number one spot on the list because of her striking scarlet hair and unique personality. Erza has a strong sense of justice, fighting for what she believes is right and the people that she cares about. Although she can often be harsh or strict with her guild members and ordinary citizens, she genuinely has a caring heart, one that is revealed when she puts her life on the line for others again and again. Erza’s story is tragic, one that might break any normal person – but this scarlet-haired character’s strength comes from within. Other characters often revel at her beauty and her magic abilities, but it is Erza’s heart that her friends love her for. Despite the darkest things that she and her comrades have been through, Erza stands strong and loyal to Fairy Tail, those whom she considers her family.
Final Thoughts
These gorgeous women on our list encompass a wide variety of backgrounds and personalities, but they have all become our favorite characters because they stand out from the rest. Long-haired anime girls seem to be more noticeable, not just due to their design, but the way they shine through the screen.
There are so many great long-haired girls in anime! What did you think of our list? Did any of your favorite characters make it? Were there any you feel should have been included? Let us know in the comments section below. We love to hear from you!
There is just something about girls with long hair. Call me old-fashioned, but I admire women who can grow and maintain their hair to such lengths that it ends up flowing with the wind when they walk by. Yes, there’s just a sort of charm that goes with long hair, and in anime, such is the case as well.
Long-haired anime girls are quite notable mainly because whenever anime chooses to design a character with long hair (especially the uncharacteristically long ones), the character would usually have a unique dimension that is not found on any of the other characters in the series. Thus, most long-haired girls in anime are simply endearing.
So let’s check out our list, shall we? Take note that due to the immense number of ladies in anime with long hair, I had to go for a specific angle. Thus, the girls here are those with really long hair, to the point when it would be a bit unusual to see such lengths in real life. Well, most of them, anyway.
10. Touko Fukawa from Danganronpa
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: July 2013 - September 2013
Though this girl’s hair is not really as long as the others in this list (wait for #2 and #1, everyone), she is nonetheless very notable because of how unique her personality is. Despite the multiple personality trope being used in anime multiple times, Touko is, for some reason, thanks to the writers of the anime, able to bring a unique take on a character that hides something dark inside.
Shy and ruthless, demure and brash, gentle and brutal, Touko brings a fresh new take to the concept of characters with underlying secrets that lie beneath the surface. For that, she deserves a spot on our list.
9. Lacus Clyne from Mobile Suit Gundam Seed
- Episodes: 50
- Aired: October 2004 - October 2005
Lacus is simply the princess of the Gundam SEED universe. Beautiful, sweet, and good-natured, she is the very definition of what a leading lady is. Playing a huge part in the vast, intricate plot of the Gundam SEED universe, Lacus grows from a somewhat naive young girl to a mature, capable commander by the end of the series.
Her trademark long pink hair flows down her back in a very notable fashion. Usually, female anime characters who are introduced with long hair would cut it short the moment they decide to get their hands dirty (Take Yona from Akatsuki no Yona, for example). Lacus, on the other hand, never does this. Rather, she stays the sweet, good-natured girl who was introduced at the beginning of the series, but by the end of the story, she’s become better.
8. Lady Caterina Sforza from Trinity Blood
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: April 2005 - October 2005
This noble lady is one of the most memorable characters in the Trinity Blood saga, with her long flowing robes and her ridiculously full hair. Though she is usually portrayed as the very definition of how a noblewoman must think and act, Lady Caterina is actually a completely different woman under the surface, willing to take risks that might even endanger her own life in the long run. Nevertheless, this thick-haired beauty never hesitates to take risks, making her even somewhat Machiavellian.
Though her hair usually portrayed to be styled in massive curls, the scenes when the anime does portray her to literally let her hair down show her crowning glory to be extremely long.
7. Kikyo from Inuyasha
- Episodes: 167
- Aired: October 2000 - September 2004
Long hair is usually associated in anime with women who have pasts that are very notable. There is probably no other anime character with a past as dynamic as Kikyo, the woman who finds herself a rival to her very reincarnation. Sounds pretty crazy, right? Author Rumiko Takahashi makes it work, though, as her characterization is one thing that was explored very well during the course of InuYasha’s plot.
The fact that she looks like a traditional Japanese shrine maiden is another thing that definitely adds to her appeal. As much as most of the series’ fans don’t like her due to her resurrected persona’s psychosis, no one can deny that this girl, who battled death itself, is a presence to be reckoned with.
6. Misuzu Kamio from Air
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: January 2005 - April 2005
The main heroine of one of Key’s masterpieces, Air, is one notable long-haired girl. Portrayed as an innocent, sweet, albeit a bit clumsy girl, Misuzu is the first girl that the series’ protagonist, Yukito encounters. Eventually, they develop feelings for each other, though such a love is destined to fail as Misuzu is cursed by something that was branded on her during her past life.
Her iconic appearance in the anime involves her extremely long hair, which she usually wears in a ponytail. As the series drew to a close, however, and as she started reverting back to a childlike persona and appearance, her hair was cut short, being used as a prominent plot device and symbol.
5. Chi from Chobits
- Episodes: 26
- Aired: April 2002 - September 2002
Chi is the definitive persocom of the Chobits anime. Sweet and innocent, Chi has to relearn everything about the world when she was found by Hideki, whom she later develops feelings for. Being extremely attractive with her lithe form and her extremely long blonde hair, even the somewhat responsible Hideki usually finds himself thinking inappropriate thoughts when interacting with her.
Chi is among the rarest series of persocoms ever made, the Chobits series, who are rumored to have sentience far beyond that of the average persocom. During the course of the series, this was proven true, as both Chi and Hideki eventually develop feelings for each other.
4. Belldandy from Ah! My Goddess
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: January 2005 - July 2005
From the modern classic anime that has endeared the hearts of anime fans, Belldandy is one of those girls that are far too good to be true. Considering she is an actual goddess, such notion is not entirely without merit. This fact alone makes Keiichi, the series’ protagonist, as arguably the luckiest guy in the anime universe. Beautiful beyond compare, she is just one of those girls who is just as beautiful inside as she is outside.
Her appearance alone makes her noteworthy, especially her long, flowing hair. Though she usually keeps it tied up in a ponytail, it is quite obvious that, as critics have pointed out, it is “impossibly long” and beautiful. Well, is is a goddess after all and yes, Keiichi is still the luckiest guy in all of anime.
3. Laura Stuart from To Aru Majutsu No Index
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: October 2008 - March 2009
The cunning Laura of the To Aru Majutsu No Index universe is definitely a girl that deserves a spot on this list. With hair that extends more than twice her height, calling her long-haired is simply an understatement. Laura always takes a lot of effort in maintaining her crowning glory, however, as she makes it a point to take care of her hair as much as she can. Vain as she can be, however, she is also quite dangerous.
Being one of the most powerful personalities in Academy City, Laura is what many would call the very symbolism of balance, as she is capable both of extreme good and extreme evil. Morally ambiguous to the point of making her dangerous, Laura is one prominent female character that very few should cross.
2. Iwai Mushanokouji from Dansai Bunri No Crime Edge
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: April 2013 - June 2013
Of course, we can never have a list of long-haired girls in anime without Iwai, the character who is actually called the Hair Queen. Having hair that is cursed to never be cut, Iwai eventually grew quite isolated. It was only after meeting Kiri Hairuma that she is able to cut her hair, though, as they soon find out, it eventually grows back to its original length.
Though the anime has had its share of detractors due to its rather conventional use of tried and tested anime tropes, there is no denying that Iwai probably holds the record for having the longest hair ever in anime. And considering this is anime we’re talking about, that is no small accomplishment.
1. Usagi Tsukino From Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
- Episodes: 46
- Aired: March 1992 - February 1993
Of course, at the top of our list is the princess of all anime bishoujos, Sailor Moon herself. With her iconic ridiculously long hair that is always tied in an equally iconic bun, Usagi is credited with possibly single-handedly bringing shoujo anime to the West, and part of this is due to her quirky appeal. Clumsy yet sweet, hesitant yet resilient, Usagi stands at the very peak of all long-haired girls in all of anime.
After all, she does not really wear her hair long just because of vanity. As shown in Sailor Moon Crystal, her hair is actually very much connected to the moon, and as such, the more she became aware of her past life in the Moon Kingdom, the more her hair grew to even more extreme lengths. For being simply unforgettable, Usagi is our list’s Number 1.
Special Mention. Sanae Dekomori - Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 2012 - December 2012
I know this is a top ten list, but this feisty little bundle of energy definitely deserves a spot in this list. Why? Just look at this girl’s hair! They’re ridiculously long and they’re used as nunchucks. Need I say more?
Sanae’s allure goes far beyond the length of her hair, however, as fans are usually endeared to her engaging personality and her extremely quirky nature. Though pretty short in stature, her confidence and personality makes her tower above the series’ other characters, gaining her a pretty decent fanbase. Plus, she’s actually uber rich, and a genius to boot!
Conclusion
And so that effectively concludes our top ten list of long-haired girls in anime. I’m sure there are a gazillion other long-haired ladies out there, so please do mention them in the comments!
