Top 10 Bomberman Games [Best Recommendations]

There was a time when planting bombs is a fun thing, yep. It was the time when Bomberman is the hottest game on the block. Although many might argue that the game has been overshadowed by other popular games, there’s always a special spot for Bomberman. The same applies to classic games like Pac-Man and the likes. Although there has been many remakes/modifications of the Bomberman series, the series manages to keep its signature gameplay, which is to use bombs and destroy obstacles and monsters. With that being said, let’s get down to the Top 10 Bomberman Games.

10. Bomberman ‘93

  • System: TurboGrafx-16, Wii, PC
  • Publisher: Hudson Soft
  • Developer: Hudson Soft
  • Release Dates: December 1992

Starting off the list, we have Bomberman ’93. The year is 1993 and Hudson Soft made this amazingly popular game. Although the concept is simple, this game became very famous back in the day. Perhaps it was thanks to the games’ feature for being able to play in a multiplayer mode to up to 5 people. Even by today’s standards, a game that supports 5 players is quite rare. Considering that this game already exists in the 90’s, definitely earned some winning points.

You would expect some of the same classic power-ups available in this game, Bomb Kick(Kick planted bombs), Remote Bombs (Manual bomb detonation), Bomb Skip(Walkthrough planted bombs), Skates(Increase movement speed), and a Flower, consider this a bonus rare item because you would have to destroy all the tiles in that particular level, but the FINAL block must be the one where the exit warp is.

9. Bomberman ‘94

  • System: TurboGrafx-16, Wii, PC, PSP, PS3
  • Publisher: Hudson Soft
  • Developer: Hudson Soft
  • Release Dates: December 1993

A year after the release of Bomberman ’93, Hudson Soft made a newer version of the Bomberman series. The Bomberman ’94. Of course, what better way to spice up the Bomberman game than to add new characters and new items? Hudson Soft did just that and introduced Louie (the Kangaroo) into the Bomberman world. Louie serves as a mount for Bomberman and comes with 5 different colours, each with its own special abilities.

The Green Louie will grant high movement speed, but won’t able to stop until he runs into an obstacle, Yellow Louie will be able to kick soft blocks, Pink Louie can dance when you press button II, Purple Louie is able to jump over one soft block or bomb at a time, last but not least the Blue Louie can kick bombs over walls and soft blocks.

The game also introduced a Skull item that you are able to pick up. Obviously, the Skull grants you random ‘Diseases’. Some of them are Slow Disease, Reverse Direction Disease, Bomb Set Disease, Bomb burp, Premature Detonation Disease and many more. In short, you should definitely avoid picking up this item.

8. Super Bomberman 4

  • System: SNES
  • Publisher: Hudson Soft
  • Developer: Hudson Soft
  • Release Dates: April 1996

Taking the number 8 spot, we have Super Bomberman 4. This series was released in April 1996. Again, Hudson Soft added a few more items into the series such as, Cosplay (which alters the character’s costume, also acts as another life), Power Glove (grants the ability to pick up and throw bombs), Boxing Glove (grants the ability to punch away bombs), Push (grants the ability to push other players).

Remember Louie the mount from Bomberman ’94? In Super Bomberman 4, Eggs are categorized into 2 types, Organic and Mechanical, each with its own unique abilities. Organic Eggs can hatch into Triceradops (Pierce Bombs), Angora (Can float over soft blocks), Swim (Moves straight ahead with high speed), Hagehage (Destroy soft blocks), Crazy Balloon (Can pass through bombs), Bobo (Increase explosions range to maximum). As for Mechanical Eggs, they can hatch into Dogun Jr. (Kicks Bombs), Ponpon (Punches Bombs), Daruman (Increase Speed to Maximum), Dancing Clown (Stuns enemies with projectiles), Bomb Tank(Decreases speed of enemies with sticky bullets), Fly Turtle (Kamikaze attack), Pakkunga (Has a line bomb attack).

Hudson Soft was able to deliver again in terms of the character design, gameplay, and overall plot, earning the number 8 spot on this list.

7. Bomberman Blitz

  • System: DSI
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Developer: Hudson Soft
  • Release Dates: November 2009

If you like the chaos of having up to 5 players in the previous Bomberman games, then this is the perfect game for you to get. How so? Bomberman Blitz can support up to 8 players in a single game. 8 Players. Yep, that’s a lot. Although there aren't any mind-blowing changes in this version of the game, Bomberman Blitz serves as a trip back to memory lane.

Although it does have basic sound and graphics improvement, the game seems to lack innovation. Thus making this game take the number 7 spot on the list. Nevertheless, 8 person battling it out in various different maps is still something to look forward to if you love Bomberman.

6. Bomberman Ultra

  • System: PS3
  • Publisher: Hudson Soft
  • Developer: Hudson Soft
  • Release Dates: June 2009

Sitting on the number 6 spot on the list, we have Bomberman Ultra. This exclusive game is made for console only so far. It supports up to 8 people in a single game, so for those who enjoy having fun with a lot of friends, this is the game to go. Compared to the number 7 spot on the list, Bomberman Ultra has better graphics.

Although there isn’t a "mount" available in this version of the game, the developers created over 50 sets of costumes that players are able to collect by bits throughout the game by destroying soft blocks. The Dangerous Bomb item (Blows up an area in any isle) is also available in this version, making gameplay more intense.

5. Bomberman Jetters

  • System: GCN, GBA
  • Publisher: Hudson Soft, Majesco Entertainment
  • Developer: Hudson Soft
  • Release Dates: March 2014

Next, we have Bomberman Jetters taking the number 5 spot on the list. This version of Bomberman is quite different from the others, as the map design is more ‘open-world’-like and more 3d than the usual maze-like box. It’s safe to pass this game as an adventure game because that’s exactly how it looked like.

Charaboms (mounts) are available in this version, and you can ride them and use their special abilities during your adventures. Special bombs are available as well; Fire Bombs, Hurricane Bombs, Aqua Bombs, Thunder Bombs, and Ice Bombs, adding flavor to the overall gameplay. Overall, this is a very unique twist to the old classic maze-like Bomberman game. So if you’re looking for something different yet still the same, this game is the answer.

4. Bomberman Generation

  • System: GCN
  • Publisher: Majesco Entertainment
  • Developer: Hudson Soft
  • Release Dates: June 2012

Bomberman Generation is very similar to Bomberman Jetters. This version of the game has a wide selection of Charaboms (mounts) that you can acquire while you’re playing the map. Few of them are obtainable through merging with your previous owned Charaboms.

Bomberman Generation has that adventure open-world feel to it, and what made this game earn the number 4 spot on the list is thanks to the Mini Games that you can play if you want to take a break from the usual Single Player mode.

3. Super Bomberman R

  • System: Nintendo Switch
  • Publisher: Konami
  • Developer: Konami
  • Release Dates: March 2017

Entering the number 3 spot of the list, we have Super Bomberman R! The graphics and gameplay in this version of the game are very smooth and satisfying. It’s more 3D like now compared to previous versions of the game. Boss Battles have become much more epic. The soundtracks are something to look forward to as well.

In this version of the game, Konami added unlockable characters into the equation, where you can unlock unique Bomberman characters you meet throughout the game, each with their own special abilities of course.

2. Bomberman Tournament

  • System: GBA
  • Publisher: Hudson Soft, Activision
  • Developer: Hudson Soft
  • Release Dates: April 2001

In the number 2 spot on the list, we have Bomberman Tournament. Now, it might not seem like the best-looking Bomberman game ever to exist, but this game definitely delivered on every basic aspect that made Bomberman games so popular; original gameplay, Charaboms that you can capture and merge. Hudson Soft did an incredible job maintaining these core aspects when making this game.

The items are pretty much similar to the majority of the Bomberman games, except this version has an added feature, Charabom Battle. You can pit your Charaboms against other Charaboms in a turn-based battle.

1. Bomberman Live: Battlefest

  • System: v
  • Publisher: Hudson Soft
  • Developer: Hudson Soft
  • Release Dates: December 2010

And finally, taking the number 1 spot of the Top 10 Bomberman Games list is none other than Bomberman Live: Battlefest! Basically, you have everything you love about Bomberman games combined into 1. It supports up to 8 players at once, you can even collect costumes.

The graphics are also improved in this game, which will come to no surprise because Bomberman Live: Battlefest is currently only available on the Xbox 360. So for those of you that fancy Bomberman games, this would be the game to get!

Final Thoughts

That’s it, folks! That concludes the top 10 Bomberman games list. Although the mechanics of this Bomberman game doesn’t really change that much since the first release, the developers did an amazing job to make it so that the gameplay won’t be boring.
