INTRODUCTION
People forget that there is a great genre out there that can really get into your mind, literally. The psychological genre allows creators the ability to distort their characters realities or make internal battles that cause their characters to question themselves. Horror, romance, action and even drama can all incorporate the psychological element and find their work becomes something surreal and we here at Honey’s Anime love that conception. Thus we wanted to share our love of psychological stories with you readers. Today we look at the Top 10 Psychological Manhwa. Don’t worry we’re not trying to mess with your minds either, this really is a top ten list.
For our list today we did some digging in the minds of manhwaga to find some of the best to share with you. Our research trip sent us to some odd worlds where murderous intent can lead to some disturbing blossoming romances and the mindset of someone who wishes to survive at any cost. These manhwa will make you question the truth as much as the characters have to in their stories. Just because a manhwa may be number 10 on this list doesn’t mean it’s not worthy to be checked out. If a psychological manhwa made it onto our list, it stood above the others. Now then are you willing to dive into this list of brain altering stories and striving to keep hold of your sanity? If you said yes, continue on brave soul.
10. Alice
- Manhwaga: Kim, Dong-Hoon
- Genre: Psychological
- Volumes: 1 Chapter
- Published Date: May, 2008
Dr. Arlem has his work cut out for him. A deadly disease has rampaged the world with seemingly no cure. If the disease infects the user, it begins to shut down the host’s bodily functions. When a young woman contracts the disease, her fate is sealed; she is going to be killed. Dr. Arlem refuses to let this woman be killed and using his skills, he will save her life.
Alice explores the reality of a deadly plague becoming a real thing. In this short purely psychological focused manhwa, Kim Dong-Hoon really used a good sense of what the inner mind of a doctor would be when his or her back is at the wall. While this may be a short one chapter work, the impressive use of dark toned art and the race against time makes Alice a truly great psychological story. We here at Honey’s Anime always are amazed when any work is short but sweet and Alice fits the bill. Our list of psychological manhwa starts with Alice and that truly goes to show you that it can only get better from here.
9. Metronome
- Manhwaga: Lee, Won-Jin
- Genre: Mystery, Drama, Fantasy, Romance, School, Supernatural, Psychological
- Volumes: 3
- Published Date: Jun, 2010- Present
If someone attractive walked up to you and proclaimed their love for you, you’d be either flattered or a bit weirded out. Well for Yuna that same event occurred, albeit with a creepier spin to it. When a man comes up to Yuna covered in blood conveying his love to Yuna, he adds an interesting line. The man claims that in one year, she will either be his or she will die. Now Yuna is being called a cursed girl while wondering what does this odd confession mean for her future?
Love is a scarier thing than we thought, especially for poor Yuna. Lee Won-Jin’s Metronome is truly a love story that will mess with your mind. We won’t spoil some of the other genres embedded into Metronome because honestly they really add that psychological theme but we can say it makes this manhwa really epic. As you learn more about Yuna’s new potential love, you’ll be very surprised and clearly thrown for a loop. Metronome will keep you transfixed just like a metronome’s rhythm and thus why it’s worthy of our top ten list.
8. Subtle Disaster
- Manhwaga: Ahn, Sung Ho
- Genre: Drama, Psychological
- Volumes: 45 (Chapters)
- Published Date: Aug, 2014- Jun, 2015
Songshin Ha already has a tough job as a webtoon writer. While he lives in an apartment complex, for the most part he has no issues until one of his neighbors becomes increasingly loud. Songshin Ha eventually loses it and seeks to find what his neighbor could possibly be doing to make such a racket. However, when he begins to investigate he finds something truly disturbing. Maybe Songshin Ha shouldn’t have tried to figure out things alone.
Subtle Disaster is a plot we don’t see too often in manhwa like this. The art style will be what people notice first and it’s indeed different, very reminiscent of cartoon-like art infused in each page. Manhwaga Ahn Sung Ho should be commended for this as it gives a breath of fresh air into the medium as a whole. What’s also amazing is the plot, seeing these characters react the way they do is something that is very realistic. The sheer amount of twists and turns Subtle Disaster takes will make your stomach turn but in a good way we promise.
7. Nowhere Boy
- Manhwaga: Jung, Pil Won
- Genre: Action, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, School, Psychological
- Volumes: 3
- Published Date: Jun, 2011- Jan, 2012
What if you can have any one wish regardless of how much it could change the world? Well, God himself grants the opportunity to one man or woman to make such a wish in a game show-like setting that looks for the unhappiest person on Earth. Success comes for one man and he wishes for the world’s complete destruction. God grants his wish with the delay of 100 days to change his mind. Thus God implements a plan to have a woman who creates comics by the name of Oh Duk Hee try to save humanity by making the man happy. Will God’s plan work?
Seriously we have to wonder how someone can create such a manhwa such as this. Nowhere Boy’s manhwaga Jung Pil Won, really examines the inner workings of a depressed individual and someone who can write about one. Besides the very different premise, Jung Pil Won really did some cool art that gives the whole series a dark but colorful tone. Three volumes we worried wasn’t enough to get a great story like Nowhere Boy enough time to conclude, but we were wrong. Definitely give Nowhere Boy a try if you like some dark humor and a great unique psychological plot.
6. Hwaja
- Manhwaga: Hong, Seong-Hyeok
- Genre: Mystery, Drama, Romance, Slice of Life, Psychological
- Volumes: 2
- Published Date: Jun, 2011- Feb, 2012
Within the city there lies an old abandoned home nestled away. There a young girl lives all by herself yet is visited by men all the time. These men bring her various gifts and presents for some strange reason. A young boy also lives in the small town, dreaming of becoming a hero one day. For some reason, fate decided to have these two meet and the boy will learn that those who meet Hwaja have their lives altered. The question to be asked though is how will their meeting change his life?
Hwaja is a short Manhwa by manhwaga Hong, Seong-Hyeok but for such a short tale the sheer impact is incredible. Before we discuss the amazing story we’d like to mention the art. Every single panel feels like a watercolor painting come to life and we were blown away here at Honey’s Anime. That’s why we’re glad the story is solid as well telling the story of Ryu in time lapsed events and how Hwaja affects his life. The psychological aspect will kick in quite quickly, but if we spoil that we’d feel bad. Thus if you wish to know why Hwaja isn’t just a romance manhwa you’ll have to read it yourself.
5. The Flowers of Evil
- Manhwaga: Lee, Hyeon-Sook
- Genre: Drama, Romance, School, Psychological
- Volumes: 7
- Published Date: 2006- 2008
Sibling love means care for one another as a family member right? Well for Se-Wa maybe that love goes deeper than just twin sisterly love. Considered crazed by most, her love for Se-Joon means she loves only Se-Joon and no one else. While this is going on, what does Se-Joon think? Find out in this twisted love story called The Flowers of Evil.
Taboo is definitely a psychological ideology. The concept of going against the moral norms of society can be examined by many but understood usually by only the one who breaks those norms. In The Flowers of Evil by manhwaga Lee Hyeon-Sook, the taboo relationship mindset is pushed to new limits. A dark almost deranged love story awaits for those willing to enter Lee Hyeon-Sook’s work, but is it a world you wish to enter? We here at Honey’s Anime say yes, you do.
4. Peak

Bukhan, they realize they may have been very wrong about this assignment. Soon these new army troops will learn that their mountain getaway is far from cozy. This mountain hides dangers that neither Ryu nor his allies are prepared for…
Peak isn’t what you think when you read the synopsis and that in turn is awesome. This Mt. Bukhan isn’t filled with deadly monsters or deadly disease, it’s filled with treacherous roads and paths typical for a mountain to have. Peak focuses on dangers real life hikers and those that save them face on a daily basis. Boasting some incredible art and a simple plot, this seven volume manhwa will examine how the mind reacts under duress. Manhwaga Hong Seong-su and Im Gang-hyeok did a service in creating a story that doesn’t seem to exaggerated and truly pays homage to those who deal with the dangerous world of saving lives on mountain terrains.
3. About Death
- Manhwaga: Sini- Hyeono
- Genre: Slice of Life, Supernatural, Psychological
- Volumes: 2
- Published Date: Sep, 2012- Feb, 2013
What will be your final thoughts when you’re about to die? About Death focuses on several stories of those who are about to move on to the next world and God examines their various life choices. Did they achieve their dreams, did they die with nothing accomplished? About Death is also very unique in that each chapter has BGM that plays in the background making each story feel like a narrative truly being played out. In this manhwa, death isn’t always the end, but the beginning as well.
Wow, that was our word reaction when we first tried About Death. Manhwaga Sini and Hyeono created a masterpiece in About Death. The stories told really invade your thoughts not just by conveying strong stories but also by having that BGM music play on each chapter. We honestly were so surprised that About Death mixed a morbid idea with such a beautiful premise. We won’t beg you to read About Death but we will say if you choose not to read this amazing slice of life, supernatural and psychological piece, you will be missing out on what manhwa can truly accomplish.

Yoon Ah-ee a young girl is finding her everyday life barely manageable as she deals with her sister and just hopes to feed her. Her life will change however when this path crosses this magician. The magician asks Yoon Ah-ee one simple question, “Do you believe in magic”?
Magic is indeed a hard to believe concept for some and for others it’s real in every sense of the word. Annarasumanara by Manhwaga Ha Il-Kwon not only will blow your mind with its almost magical art style but its psychological ideas of what is real and how it can affect you. This tale will keep you wondering each moment with a strong sense of wonder and intrigue almost like a magic trick is being played to keep your eyes glued to the page. When it all wraps up you will feel like clapping as a great feat has been accomplished before your very eyes. We here at Honey’s Anime will say we love a good magic trick just as much as we love a great manhwa, and this is indeed a great manhwa.
