In the world of anime, passions, hopes for the future and wishes are what makes every character in a story feel alive, filling its life with a meaning, and what makes it looks special in the eye of watchers. Characters in Japanese stories are always dreamers and sometimes hopeless romantics, who like to follow the person they care about everywhere and can’t help but be extremely jealous or worried when he or she is not around, but… what if the love that person feels for the object of its desire becomes that character obsession so much that turns it into a psycho?
Characters with weird hobbies and fetishes are not uncommon to see in anime, but when these interests are all focused on one, who becomes the character’s main reason to exist, then all we can expect is a sea of trouble, and a bunch of creepy situations! Creepy as turning back and find someone that’s watching you from behind a street light or whose apartment walls are covered with your pictures!
There are many stalking characters in anime out there, but not enough people who are talking about these poor forgotten things and their maniac-like fixations, sooo this is why Honey’s Anime thought we should do something to give them the right amount of attention they deserve! Here for you the list of Top 10 stalking characters in anime!
10. Kosame from (Girls Bravo: First Season)
- Episodes: 11
- Aired: July 2004 – September 2004
Yukinari is a poor small-sized student who has always been bullied and abused by girls. Unfortunately, one day Yukinari finds himself transported in an almost all girls’ city, Seiren, that orbits the Earth, together with his particularly aggressive childhood friend, Kirie Kojima. There, he meets Miharu, the only girl whose touch doesn’t affect him in any way.
While being secretly in love with Yukinari, Kirie has to defend herself from Kosame’s surprise love attacks, after she beats her in a fight. The fact that Kosame follows Kirie everywhere she goes during the course of the series and becomes obsessed to the point that Kosame’s only purpose in life seems to be sleeping with Kirie, made Kosame gain position #10 of this list, making her one of the most obstinate stalker characters in the history of anime!
9. Mafuyu Hayashi (Hatsukoi Monster/First Love Monster)

One day, fifteen-year old Kaho Nikaidō moves to Tōkyō to start a new life in a city completely different from the one she used to live in. That someone is the fascinating Kanade, she soon falls in love with, but… what she doesn’t know is that the boy of her dream is just an elementary student!
Backing Kaho and Kaname’s adventures is the cool and composed Mafuyu Hayashi, one of the three tenants of the boardinghouse. From the way she looks, Mafuyu could easily being confused with a reliable woman, but everyone has a hidden dark side, and Mafuyu’s darkside involves being absolutely obsessed with Shūgo. And she is also pretty good at stalking him. Kosame goes as far as secretly stealing his underwear to sniff it! In the twisted world of obsessive characters, we can’t but give Mafuyu top marks!
8. Yukika Amami (Ore Monogatari!!/My Love Story!!)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: April 2015 – September 2015
In no other shojo anime than Ore Monogatari!! you will meet singular characters as the protagonist Takeo Tsuyokoshi and his childhood friend Yukika are. Takeo is a very tall and well-built high school student, but despite his appearance, he is soft-hearted and sensitive. Takeo is considered a brave knight by his male companions, since he has the courage to confess his feelings to the ladies he has a crush on, but the way Takeo looks makes it not easy for his love life. His genuine personality earned him his inseparable and pretty good-looking friend Sunakawa, that all the female students would like to have as a boyfriend.
Of course, Yukika is one of those dreaming girls who wants to steal Sunakawa’s heart and her unique way to try to win his love made her gain position #8 on the list! Since back in kindergarten, when she was saved by Sunakawa in a dodgeball game, shy Amami has been in love with him, but never had the courage to confess her feelings. Amami stalked him for ten years, giving him anonymous love letters and chocolate every Valentine’s Day. Maybe Amami can’t be defined a psycho yandere, but still one of the best stalking characters with a crush ever!
7. Palm Siberia (Hunter x Hunter)
- Episodes: 148
- Aired: October 2011 – September 2014
Gon is a guy of many talents who decides to follow his father’s steps and become a Hunter. But Hunters in his world are not simple treasure or relic predators: they perform all kind of dangerous missions, from exploring uncharted lands to capturing ruthless criminals, indeed. While wishing to lead the same life his father led and hoping to find him somewhere, Gon’s travel will bring him to many friends who will help him in his task… and also an obsessive stalker who will follow him everywhere!
Palm is surely pretty far from the idea of the cute and shy high school student with a crush on her teacher, but she’s also crazy and unstable with the dream of being with the person she’s in love with. Stalkers, no matter how they look like (especially if they can take the shape of a perfect wife and deceive you), are still pretty unsettling, and especially in Palm’s case, try to imagine poor Gon’s surprise while he’s strolling around and suddenly notices a Samara-like lady staring at him from behind a bush! Let’s not forget how she stalks her teacher as well! She really deserves the seventh position is all for her!
6. Mika Harima (Durarara!!)
- Episodes: 24

Mikado Ryūgamine, convinced by his best friend, is starting a new life in the darkest side of Tōkyō’s downtown district of Ikebukuro, where the cruelest criminals and gangsters live. In a lost city with no hope left, a hooligan, a doctor from the black market, a youngster obsessed with magic, a stalker and many other unconventional people gather, while an urban legend about a headless “Black Rider” who rides a motorcycle and runs through Tōkyō streets is spreading around.
Maybe one of the weirdest characters in this Top 10, Mika Harima is surely the type of stalker who is so completely fixated on the love of her life that she ends up putting her own life in danger! Her hyperactive and joyful personality turns into an obsessive but genuine one when she happens to meet Seiji. Mika soon starts to collect all kinds of information and follow Seiji everywhere, despite the fact he’s not exactly the typical good guy you would have fallen for.
An uncommon character for an uncommon story that can’t miss a position of our stalking characters list!
5. Mizore Shirayuki (Rosario to Vampire/Rosario + Vampire)
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: January 2008 – March 2008
Tsukune Aono can’t exactly be defined a brilliant student and has many troubles to get into a high school. This is why his parents decide to enroll him in Yōkai Academy, unaware of the fact that they are going to put their son’s life in danger: Yōkai Academy is indeed a school that can be attended only by monsters and every human who is found on school grounds will be punished with immediate execution!
In the universe of stalking characters, Mizore Shirayuki is surely one of the craziest. She has been hurt by her teacher, who took advantage of her and her feelings, but by the way she treats Tsukune it doesn’t look like she has learnt that becoming someone’s worst nightmare is a bad thing. Although being a character with a sad story, Mizore’s attempts to win Tsukune’s heart are quite hilarious, but also the fact she promises herself she’ll make a baby with Tsukune, even if that means forcing him to, is somewhat… amusing!?
4. Sadatsuka Nao (Shokugeki no Sōma/Food Wars: Shokugeki no Sōma)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: April 2015 – September 2015
Sōma Yukihira is a fifteen-year-old who has always helped his father by working as a chef in the restaurant he owns. When Soma’s father closes the doors to the restaurant, he tells Soma to attend Tōtsuki Culinary Academy, famous for being an elite cooking school, but also known for its so called “food wars”.
Sadatsuka Nao isn’t certainly someone you wouldn’t notice in an anime. Not only is she one hell of a cook, able to use her emotions in the food she prepares, but Nao is also a passionate and creative character, with a strong personality and even stronger obsessions, like the one she has for Erina! Jealous of anyone who gets near Erina, Nao instantly labels as her “mortal enemy”, Nao’s first mission in life is to stalk her only love and win her heart. She never gives up or hesitates when it comes to Erina, even if that means writing 30 letters per day to able to get close to her!
3. Matoi Tsunetsuki (Sayōnara Zetsubō Sensei)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 2007 – September 2007

Despite Nozomu’s pessimistic personality, Matoi seems to be so sincerely in love with him that she doesn’t even care about the fact he has a big problem. On the contrary, she appears very busy with obsessively stalking him. Not only does Matoi follow Nozomu everywhere he goes, calls him every five minutes, dress like him, has a duplicate key of his house to break in every time she wants to, but she has even planted bugs in his room to control him! Maybe Matoi is not the most violent of stalker characters out there, but she’s still a crazy and obsessed weirdo that deserves position #3 of this list!
2. Ringo Oginome (Mawaru Penguindrum/Penguindrum)
- Episodes: 24
- Aired: July 2011 – December 2011
Takakura twin brothers Kanba and Shōma live together with their sister Himari in an old and obsolete house. One day, they decide to visit an aquarium and buy Himari a penguin-like hat as souvenir. Soon, she is miraculously revived by the strange penguin hat, that the twins find out to be possessed by an alien entity, that promises them to save her. But on a condition: they need to find the mysterious “Penguindrum” in its place.
Unlike his brother, poor Shōma has a lot more than just a handful trouble in his wild adventure to find the “Penguindrum”. Not only does Shoma have to think about how to save his sister, but he’s also dragged along by Ringo Oginome, who is fixated on Kenji, whom Ringo tirelessly stalks convinced of the idea they are destined to be together. In the history of stalkers with a crush, Ringo Oginome can’t be ignored, being both a funny and sad character, who sees Kenji as the way to fix her troubled family situation. This mix of painful story and mental problems gained her the sympathy of many fans of stalker characters!
1. Anna Nishikinomiya (Shimoneta to iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai/ SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: July 2015 – September 2015
Tanukichi Okuma is a high school student who happens to live in a new and pure Japan where strict laws are in place banning all obscenities on Japanese ground, and all citizens are monitored by authorities, to be sure they stay chaste. But in Tanukichi’s school a secret organization, called SOX, is planning to challenge the authority of Anna, president of the student council, who stands up for government and its decisions.
Position #1 could only be for borderline Anna Nishikinomiya , and all the people who watched Shimoseka can’t help but agree with it! Anna, regal and soft, is just the mask for her true yandere self, that wakes up when she is around Tanukichi. She is scared to death by the thought someone could take Tanukichi away from her, so she turns into a sadistic maniac towards every girl who get in contact with him, for the sake of a controversial love! Definitely the worst case of stalking character ever, so be sure to stay away from Tanukichi, if you don’t want to run into Anna’s terrific punishment!
Final Thoughts
Here we are, at the end of our long trip across fetishes, obsessions, manias and sadistic behaviors, all for the sake of something that’s a strong feeling, but maybe can be only considered the dark side of what “love” really is. Love can surely manifest itself in a variety of forms, but when the most intense emotion ever crosses its path with a sad past, scars, abuse, abandon or simply a twisted mind, it can also turn into the scariest of the sentiments, and make people who come in contact with it suffer.
Well, luckily, in the world of Japanese anime, stalking can, most of the time, be experienced light-heartedly. Situations involving it are often kind of amusing and can make watchers feel sympathy for unstable characters, especially if they keep painful memories in their heart.
