Stands are the physical manifestation of a User's spirit. They are the main weapons in Stardust Crusaders and often represent their temperament as well. Drawing reference from the Tarot cards, each stand may even have a correlation to the archetype they represent. Later in the series, Stands may also draw reference to the ancient Egyptian Gods.
As such, we are picking the Top 10 stands from Stardust ranging from power, coolness and just in general - badassness. Warning, this list will contain massive spoilers!
10. Enya’s Justice
Justice is the stand of Enya, the close confidant of Dio, basically his Number 2. It takes the form of a giant skeleton king with fog and smoke as its primary weapon. Justice is physically tied to a fog. Within the mist, it can create illusions or enter another User should they have an open wound and control them like a puppet.
It is ironic for the card that represents Justice to take the side of pure evil. Justice shows up as the last few antagonists that are preventing the Joestar crew from reaching Dio. Justice had even managed to control one of protagonists, Polnareff and posed quite a threat to the crew.
9. Kakyoin’s Hierophant Green
Hierophant Green is the stand of Kakyoin, one of the main protagonists of the Egypt crew. It is very elastic and moves fluidly like water. Extremely agile, it can even coil into an enemy and their stand and control them the same way Justice does. Its ultimate attack is also the most iconic catchphrase of the character - Emerald Splash!
Despite always being targeted by enemies, Kakyoin has proven himself to be a beneficial ally to the team. Hierophant Green usually restricts the movements of the enemy and thus creates an opening for the rest to land a devastating blow. It is only one of the few long ranged Stands with Emerald Splash covering a large area and range.
8. Hol Horse´s Emperor
Emperor is the Stand of Hol Horse, a stereotypical cowboy. The stand itself is gun and its main characteristic is the ability to allow Hol Horse to control the trajectory of the bullets. In addition, Hol Horse is also able to rapidly fire numerous bullets making it stand out from a normal gun. Due to its comparatively small size, enemies will not be able to harm Hol Horse through dealing damage to Emperor as well.
What's cool about this stand is the fact that it is not like the conventional stands in the anime. Freely controlling the bullets gives Hol Horse an advantage as he will be able to shoot at an impossible angle or from far away and then directing the bullets to the anime. Being unpredictable, even the fast and precise Chariot is not even able to stop a bullet from the Emperor as Hol Horse would simply change the trajectory.
7. Avdol’s Magician's Red
Magician's Red is the stand of Avdol. It has a bird like head and humanoid in nature. Its main power is the manipulation of fire. The flames of the Magician are intense enough to evaporate metal. This intensity goes beyond burning something to a crisp!
The iconic signature of the stand is Crossfire Hurricane, where Magician's Red fire takes the form of the ankh which covers a large area. It is also noteworthy to note that Magician's Red entrance is simply a dazzle as he usually appears enveloped in flames, ready to fight, a signal to the enemy that he is strong.
6. Anubis
Anubis is a self-aware stand who swore his loyalty to Dio. It takes the form of a curved sword and can instantly possess anyone that tries to wield it. Anubis's existence as a sword is also a testament to its ability. Unlike a normal sword, the slices of the sword can be manipulated such that it would appear that when sheathed, it has the ability to cut.
Anubis is unique as a stand as unlike most Stands, it has free-will and acts as the User as well as the Stand. This also suggests that Anubis is highly intelligent with almost the intelligence and wisdom to match its long existence. His character also takes the form of the real Anubis, the Egyptian god of the afterlife.
5. Telence T. D'Arby’s Atum
Atum is the stand of Telence T. D'Arby. Atum holds the power of soul capturing and imprisonment. Atum also grants D'Arby the ability to detect lies by reading into the souls of the person.
While technically not fighting, the whole battle between the team and D'Arby is through gaming. D'Arby will only allow passage into Dio's mansion by winning in video games. Similar to his younger brother whom Joutarou defeated in gambling, this 'fight' is particularly interesting to watch. It puts pressure on the team as they will have to bet their souls with a video game as its stake.
4. Death Thirteen
Death Thirteen is the stand of an unnamed baby found in the desert. The main ability of Death Thirteen is in the land of dreams. This makes it entirely possible to kill off the characters in their sleep had it not been outwitted. Death Thirteen can conjure up a dream world where it can slowly toy with its victims until his owner decides to kill them off.
Did we mention that you can't use your Stand in a dream world? That is why Death Thirteen posed a serious threat to the protagonists as they are left defenceless. The victims of Death Thirteen will also forget any instances of the dream which allows numerous opportunities for assassination. It also takes the form of the Grim Reaper but with a clown face. There's no better way to saying goodbye to the world than by with a smile!
3. Jean Pierre Polnareff’s Silver Chariot
Silver Chariot is the stand of Jean Pierre Polnareff. It is clad in heavy armour and its fight style is the traditional French fencing. Despite its hulking armour, Chariot is extremely fast and can deal multiple stabs and slash that is equivalent to the speed of Star Platinum. When he takes off his armour, it becomes fast enough to create shadow copies of itself.
In terms of speed, Chariot is the closest to Star Platinum. Chariot is also very precise and is able to deflect Hol Horse's bullets in point blank range. Chariot is a force to be reckoned with its extreme speed and precision. The stand which is devoid of feelings partnered with its goofy owner is a good touch and this contrast usually adds humour to the show.
2. Vanilla Ice’s Cream
Cream is the stand of Vanilla Ice. It's appearance can only be described as a form of a demon. It's monstrous like appearance is only matched by its abilities as it is easily the strongest stands in the whole universe of Stardust crusaders. It can consume itself and become a void which devours anything in its path as its primary ability.
Needless to say, Cream is the biggest threat to the Joestar and their friends and is second only to Dio. Cream even took out Avdol and Iggy and left Polnareff severely injured. With the Void being almost undefeatable, the fight between Cream and the protagonists is a fitting penultimate battle before fighting with Dio.
1. Joutarou Kuujou’s Star Platinum / Dio Brando’s The World
Although a cliché choice, both stands deserve to be tied in the top position. Both of the stand's abilities are similar if not identical. The ultimate move - Time Stop is also common to both stands. They are the stands of Joutarou Kuujou and Dio Brando respectively. The untapped power of Star Platinum was only revealed in the climactic battle between Joutarou and Dio.
Easily the strongest stands as time manipulation have always been the undisputed dominating supernatural power in fiction. The conclusive battle between the rivals would have been a stalemate had Dio not been complacent. With The World's defeat, Star Platinum is arguable the best stand remaining in the series.
With The World representing assured success and The Star representing hope, the final battle between Dio and Joutarou brings about a fitting end to Stardust Crusader saga.
Of course, there are still numerous stands in Jojo's Bizarre Adventures that could be potentially powerful as well. Which stand of those are your favourites?
We would also like to make honorary mention to Thoth and Khnum and the legendary brothers who gave us a moment of comedy with their appearance and their obviously flawed attempt at assassinating our heroes.
Let us know who's your favourite stand and we will see you again in Jojo Part IV, Diamond Is Unbreakable
