Beautiful anime boys are a sign from the heavens that life is still worth living, despite everything that this year had to throw at us. To be true, were it not for the sparkling smiles and unrivaled badassery of these husbandos, we may never have made it across the finish line to 2021. So, to honor their contribution to the otaku of the world, we’ve rounded up our five favorite anime husbandos from 2020. Let’s salute them with our whole hearts!
5. Frankenstein from Noblesse
Almost every member of Noblesse’s male cast looks like they could’ve stepped right off the set of a K-pop music video, but we’re particularly wild about Raizel’s devoted butler Frankenstein. Although he’s a human, he possesses the lifespan and powers of a Noble, so he was able to prepare a place for his master in the modern world (a high school where he serves as the principal) during Raizel’s centuries-long sleep. Frankenstein is at his most badass when righteously smiting anyone who dares threaten his master, but our favorite moments are the slice-of-life scenes that chronicle Frankenstein’s home life with his ever-increasing crowd of houseguests. He doesn’t care if you’re a genetically altered super soldier hellbent on revenge – if you don’t pick up your candy wrappers off the floor, you will be punished!
4. Aguero Agnes Khun from Kami no Tou (Tower of God)
During Bam’s journey to ascend the Tower of God, he teams up with two unusual Regulars: the bombastic lizard man Rak Wraithraiser and the mysterious former aristocrat Khun. We’ve unironically called Rak the “best boy” of the series in the past, but for pure husbando energy, we’d have to go with Khun. He’s frighteningly intelligent, an expert manipulator, wields a briefcase that can hold and/or duplicate anything, and (probably) has Bam’s best interests at heart. Plus, he has a scene where he ties his hair up in a ponytail during a heated battle, so that earns him like 100 extra points right there!
3. William James Moriarty from Yuukoku no Moriarty (Moriarty the Patriot)
Traditionally, Sherlock Holmes’ arch-nemesis Moriarty is portrayed as a severe-looking figure with almost reptilian features and mannerisms, but that’s not exactly sexy, so this anime chooses to portray the dangerous mastermind as a gorgeous young man with striking red eyes and a disarming smile. This Moriarty was born at the very bottom of Victorian society and used his natural wit to steal a noble’s identity and reinvent himself as a “criminal consultant” who helps the downtrodden get revenge on the heartless rich people who wronged them. It’s captivating to watch Moriarty and his brothers outwit their opponents with clever little lies and carefully planned schemes, especially once Sherlock himself enters the picture. We can’t wait to see more once season 2 premieres this April!
2. Satoru Gojou from Jujutsu Kaisen
You’d never guess it based on his laid-back and borderline goofy attitude, but Satoru Gojou is one of the most powerful Jujutsu sorcerers in the whole country. He’s all smiles until it’s time to exorcise a Curse, and then he switches to an unsettlingly cruel demeanor that his enemies soon learn to fear. Once he lifts his blindfold to reveal his dazzling blue eyes, he can precisely control his Cursed Energy and even manipulate spacetime! It’s hard to believe that the handsome guy dancing in the ED like he’s Peter Parker in Spider Man 3 could be so powerful...
1. Laurent Thierry from Great Pretender
Laurent isn’t your average conman – in fact, he’s a multi-lingual globetrotter with an unshakable poker face who makes his living separating corrupt millionaires from their not-so-hard-earned cash. His first appearance sees him effortlessly outwitting “Japan’s best swindler” Makoto Edamura, after which he drags the poor guy on con after con (frequently leaving out key details of the plans just to watch Edamura squirm). Beyond that, though, Laurent actually has an emotionally charged backstory with fellow con-artist Dorothy, whose mysterious absence contributes heavily to his motivation within the story. Laurent might be a two-faced criminal with a thrill-seeking streak a mile wide, but we just can’t stop loving him for it!
Final Thoughts
We’re also big fans of Hanako from Toilet Bound Hanako-kun (mostly because of his mischievous charm and adorable relationship with Nene), as well as the diverse group of male suitors from My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom. But who were your favorite anime husbandos of 2020? Let us know in the comments, and thanks so much for reading!
