Discussion Time
Have you ever just skip school and find some ways to kill time to alleviate your boredom, but only to stumble upon a student who has the same idea as you and becomes your friend? Although there is a chance to go beyond friendship level, right? But things don’t usually work out due to others in life, so grab a chair because this is going to be a long journey of love.
1. Characters
Let’s start with Adachi, she is the kind of person who doesn’t want to involve herself with people other than Shimamura. As the story progresses they hang out together more often and she starts to have strange dreams where she kisses Shimamura. That, in itself, makes her more self-conscious whenever she is around Shimamura. Sometimes, she can be jealous, needy, and childish whenever someone else is interacting with her Shimamura.
Shimamura is a daydreamer and doesn’t mind talking to anyone who approaches her. She always answers people’s questions curtly and priorities others first rather than hers. The story seems to suggest that she has, for some unknown reason… or plot, that she attracts a lot of unwanted attention and odd characters to make situations interesting. The main issue with Shimamura is that she is dense. Yes, you know where this is going…sort of.
Now, for the side characters, Hino, Nagafuji, and Yashiro. Truth to be told, three of them are weird, unique, and interesting in their own way. Hino always encounters strange people whom she introduces to Shimamura. Nagafuji can be smart but stupid in some situations because she has the tendency to forget. Yeah, we know, an odd combination. Yashiro is full of mystery as she has blue hair and blue eyes and the way she speaks as if she is an alien from another planet, and also wears a spacesuit on some occasion.
2. Good Pacing of Development
If you are expecting a sprint when it comes to romance, this is not the case. We’re talking about nice and natural pacing of love. Adachi and Shimamura meet each other for the first time in the gym loft and they didn’t converse with each other much at first. But boredom leads them together and become friends and they start to slowly open up to each other, but not at a personal in-depth level.
From there, Adachi’s shy and self-conscious nature begin to grow. If Adachi dates Shimamura, who is also a female, she is scared of how other people sees and thinks of them in their society, in their world at least. As for Shimamura, she didn’t think of those as much as Adachi, but she does have a slight special feeling toward her. In short, both of the main characters have feelings toward each other and none of them takes each other’s confession seriously as they thought they are jokes. But more importantly, we’re talking about a wholesome, innocent love.
The story shows how Adachi and Shimamura slowly develop from being truants to the norm by hanging out with Hino and Nagafuji and enjoy their high school life. We’re talking about shopping, karaoke, visiting each other’s house, and attending classes. Please don’t skip class, you need the education to go through with life and prosper.
3. In-depth Thought Process
The format of the story is in the first-person view. We’re not focusing on the thought process and views of Adachi, but also Shimamura. Both have different mindsets to things in life with the experiences and culture they have experienced. Shimamura’s family is kind and chill, whereas Adachi’s family remained unknown for now as this volume didn’t reveal them just yet, but she didn’t talk to her family as much as Shimamura. Probably because of that, Adachi is seeking someone who sees her as someone special which develops her needy nature.
Final Thoughts
Adachi and Shimamura is a cute and wholesome light novel series where you can read and understand their views toward each other and the society they live in every step of the way. You can’t help but feel supportive to Adachi, since she is the one who is at the point of confessing her feelings to Shimamura but fail multiple times. You can do it, Adachi. You just need to take it slow and confess at the right time and moment. The illustrations are amazing and have anyone realize how shy Adachi is?
On that note, if you’re looking for a yuri light novel series, give this one a try. Remember, we’re talking about a very in-depth thought process of both characters so sit back and enjoy the story.
