5 Adorable and Wickedly Powerful Familiars in Anime

Anime has been known to have a slew of weird creatures thrown in—especially in shonen series—just to grab the attention of fans’ aww receptors. Most of the time, familiars tend to be nothing more than merchandise possibilities but in some anime, familiars can actually be cute and extremely powerful!

Today we here at Honey’s Anime look at the 5 most adorable and powerful familiars in anime! These little monsters might make you want to hug them and squeeze them but when they get serious…things get real!

5. Mokona Modoki from xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa Chronicle (Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE)

Our first little white ball of cuteness is Mokona Modoki from both xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa Chronicle. While one series presents Mokona Modoki as white and the other black, these two little fluffy bunny-like beings aren’t just cute but oddly powerful! While neither version will go around killing baddies or creating super-powerful magical attacks, they possess abilities that allow for skills like dimensional travel and repelling of evil magic. It is said that the white Mokona has 108 abilities while the black Mokona can see spirits. We included both on our list because technically both are clones of each other and while their personalities differ slightly, they are still two sides of the same coin.

4. Kohaku “Byakutei” from Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. (In Another World With My Smartphone)

Touya Mochizuki and his party of odd warriors had quite a run-in with a powerful white tiger. Luckily, our overpowered protagonist was able to convince this scary beast to join him and the large tiger-like monster changed into easily one of the cutest—and fluffiest—familiars ever! Dubbed Kohaku by Touya, the once intimating creature dons a smaller more cat-like body when he’s in town or with the party in non-dangerous areas. Kohaku is a prime example of being weary of cute anime familiars. Yes, he might look cute and cuddly when he’s not in combat but if Touya needs his power, then this mini-familiar will become a ferocious beast capable of unleashing vicious tiger-related strikes and moving with otherworldly speed.

3. Kirara from Inuyasha

Sango’s pet nekomata (a two-tailed demon cat) might seem oh so adorable at first glance but when our warrior goes into battle mode to take down some demons, Kirara changes. When Kirara is needed in battle form, this little nekomata familiar becomes a larger beast that can not only fly but shoot fire from her mouth! Sango has owed her life many times to Kirara as she would have lost plenty of fights if not for her nekomata familiar’s power/strength on the battlefield. Truly, we here at Honey’s Anime wish we had a Kirara in our lives. Imagine how awesome it would be to fly and snuggle with an adorable nekomata familiar.

2. Syrup from Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu (BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense)

Syrup...what is the first thing you think of when you hear that word? Probably syrup like for pancakes or some other dishes. In the world of BOFURI, Syrup isn’t a type of liquid condiment but instead a small turtle that makes us want to own a pet turtle. Syrup is legit the cutest turtle familiar we’ve ever seen in an anime series but Syrup’s cuteness isn’t what made him perfect for our list. Partnered with Maple—the main lead of BOFURI—Syrup is capable of a lot of neat tricks that make him perfect for a defense-focused fighter like Maple. Syrup can not only heal/protect his teammates when the battle gets dodgy but he can also grow to a huge size to become an intimating turtle beast! Maple has relied on Syrup to make up for what skills she lacks and the two have become a true partnership perfect for any VRMMO.

1. Puck from Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World -)

When we’re first introduced to Puck from Re:Zero, we all thought this little flying cat that talks was indeed cute but also probably just there for comedy purposes. About halfway through the series, however, his cute talking cat—that flies—showed some fangs…some rather large and ferocious fangs.

Puck doesn’t seem to be able to fight for long in his pet form but when a specific event befalls his owner—Emilia—Puck changes into the Apocalyptic Beast of the Great Frost. This massive castle-sized creature is only seen in silhouette form in Re:Zero but it’s still Puck and his powers have been amplified to 1000x. Puck’s power causes the entire castle and the grounds around it to become a frozen tundra and he apparently can even kill with wicked speed. Needless to say, Puck is absolutely adorable when not angry but if he was to utilize his true form…this beast could easily destroy the world unchallenged. We love you Puck…don’t freeze us.

Final Thoughts

Anime familiars can often be annoying if done incorrectly in an anime series. These little monster pets/companions can ruin some series too due to them being overly annoying or just unneeded. Luckily, the familiars above are both quite adorable and also important to each series. Have we missed any adorable but powerful familiars found in anime? Let us know via the comments down below!
