Sword Art Online: Alicization Preview (No Spoilers)

Kirito once again finds himself in a VR World. Only this time, he has little recollection of how or why he even ended up there. He soon meets Eugeo, which prompts Kirito to see flashes of the past where he, Eugeo, and a girl named Alice lived peacefully until a fateful day changed everything for them. With memories of a childhood in this world that shouldn’t be possible for him to have, Kirito journeys to find out the fate of Alice and what exactly is going on in this “Underworld”.

Eugeo Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)

1. Overcoming Self-Doubt

Eugeo’s greatest enemy at first is his own fear. In episodes 3 and 4, he is frozen when confronted by goblins. Even when Eugeo does fight, he does so with a lack of confidence and is nearly killed for it. As he learns swordsmanship from Kirito and meets more people who are counting on him, Eugeo finds that his doubt isn’t a weakness at all. Fear for the safety and wellbeing of his friends becomes the source of his power and his confidence in choosing to do what is right.

2. Empathy and Compassion

All too familiar with feeling hopeless after losing Alice, Eugeo is sensitive to those around him being in emotional distress. Kirito, Selka, and Tiese all have quiet, emotional moments where Eugeo sometimes says just the words needed to help, or just listens and comforts them. Episode 9 in particular, in which Tiese bares her worries, is especially representative of this.

3. The Blue Rose Sword

Formerly guarded by an ancient dragon, the Blue Rose Sword is Eugeo’s weapon he acquired from his travels to the End Mountains. The beautiful weapon is not only a powerful divine object, but a symbol of Eugeo’s growth. At first, the sword was so heavy Eugeo had to transport it down from the End Mountains over the course of years. Eventually, as Eugeo grows, he becomes powerful enough to wield it in battle and unleash torrents of ice driven by his will.

4. Growing Determination

The journey from simple village boy to wielder of the full power of the Blue Rose Sword seems impossible, but the determination to become better drives Eugeo to push on. The moment he and Kirito cut down the Gigas Cedar in Ruild Village eventually leads to the confrontation with Raios and Humbert in Episode 10 that pushes him beyond what held him back in the past. No matter what, Eugeo will never give up on finding Alice.

5. For What is Right

The Taboo Index safeguards that are in place to prevent the dwellers of Underworld from breaking the rules are something Eugeo never questioned. When the system manifests in his eye during Alice’s capture, he cannot muster the strength to fight against it. Eugeo’s defining moment is when he finally overcomes this, his eye exploding in defiance of the world itself as he cuts off Humbert’s arm in episode 10. After this, there is no going back as he decides to believe in his own feelings of justice and what is right.

Final Thoughts

Eugeo is a different kind of sidekick character than Kirito has had in the past. Most of the characters that have fought alongside Kirito have either been experienced already or solely relied on Kirito to save the day. In Eugeo, we have someone who begins with nothing but the desire to become better and eventually grows to fight as an equal with our favorite black swordsman. What are some other things about Eugeo that stand out? Is he the best companion character Kirito has ever had? Let us know in the comments what you think!
