Glenn Radars Bio

Seiyuu Name: Soma Saito
This character is just like what the title implied. Bastardly. In hindsight, Glenn Radars is a very lazy and lax person. He doesn’t seem to care about anything anymore really and was just focusing on his survivability and livelihood.

After living off Celica Arfonia for a year, Glenn Radars was given an ultimatum to work as a substitute teacher at Alzano Imperial Magic Academy. Being forced into teaching, Glenn became unmotivated and uncaring to his students. But as days passed, Glenn Radars starts to show signs of knowledge, teaching students a deeper meaning of what the fundamentals are of magic. Will he be able to regain their trust and respect?

Glenn Radars Highlights

1. His Personality

As much of a nuisance he is, Glenn Radars is still a loveable character. Aside from his lax nature, he has some quirks that appeal to the general anime community. I guess it’s how Glenn is portrayed in the series and how all of his nook and crannies help build him as a character. The bastard magic instructor won’t be appealing if he were to be nice, and all politically correct to everyone. It will make the character dull and boring therefore taking out the ‘flavor’ or ‘seasoning’ out of this anime since the series seem to focus on him as the protagonist.

As the series progresses, you can see there is quite a few slapstick comedy revolving Glenn Radars. It fitted well, as the character is already a goofball. Adding the comedy essence to this character is ‘a cherry on top’, resulting in a loveable character.

2. His Unique Way of Teaching

I’m sure a lot of you reading this now is probably a student now or were a student at some point in your lives. With that being said, teachers have played a very important role in our learning process. You are bound to meet teachers, some are good, in terms of how they teach and some are bad, as they come out boring. It’s not easy to teach in an interesting way.

Glenn Radars is one of those teachers that pulled it off. Despite his lacking motivation to teach, when he does teach, it’s a treat for his fellow students. You can see it in episode 2 of the series, as he criticized how it’s stupid to follow what the textbook to the T, without having to understand the fundamental basics of magic.
Personally, I can relate to this situation, we see it in our lives all too often, as teachers teach according to the textbook and we end up ‘memorizing’ instead of understanding what the lessons really meant. If there’s one teacher that does a great job in teaching, Glenn Radars is considered to be one of them.

3. His Will to Protect Others

He might appear to be full of himself, Glenn Radars is actually a kind-hearted person. As shown in episode 3 of the series, when the academy is under attack by terrorist, Glenn stepped up his game and risked his life to protect his fellow students. It got to the point where he ignores his severe wounds just to save the Academy from blowing up.

His decision earned him major points of trust from his students, one, in particular, is Rumia Tingel, where it gave her the dedication to save Glenn from dying, transferring some of her powers to Glenn and giving him that one extra push to disable to curse and save the entire academy.

4. His True Identity

Although at this point in time, there isn’t much of Glenn Radars’ past that have been revealed yet. But throughout the series, there were hints suggesting that Glenn Radars’ mysterious past has something to do with his previous role as the Mage of Justice. This assumption is backed up by some of the things that happened in the series, one of which where Rumia’s past was somehow connected to this Mage of Justice figure, and how Glenn Radars have outstanding magical abilities, in-depth knowledge and hand-to-hand combat that were on par with the military. If there’s one thing that is interesting about Glenn Radars, is his past.

5. His Attentiveness to His Students

If you have read the previous paragraphs, you will come to the conclusion that Glenn is a loser of a substitute teacher that does nothing but slack off. But, in episode 4 of the series, you can see that Glenn Radars was able to specifically identify each of his students’ strengths, which come to show that he really pays attention to his students and are aware of their potentials.
He was able to make sure all of his students participate in the upcoming magic competition and utilizing their potentials to the fullest. There is a catch though, his intentions weren’t that noble after all, and it was revealed that he was actually short on an allowance and was aiming to get extra allowance for winning the competition. Yep. He is still a bastard of a magic instructor.

Final Thoughts

There you have it, a substitute teacher that does better-teaching students than most of the teachers in their academy. Shoot, maybe in real life too. I think if you are striving to become a teacher, getting to know each and every one of the students is a good way to become a successful and lovable teacher. It’s great to have that bond, not just as a fellow teacher and a student but a deeper connection that makes one a great person in general.

Even though Glenn Radars can’t exactly be considered the ‘Best Teacher’, his ways to approaching his students gained him the respect that a lot of teachers yearn to have. As for the series itself, it’s very enjoyable with and I advise you to try and watch it if you are looking for something fun and exciting.:D
