Goblin Slayer Preview (No Spoilers)

A young Priestess is fortunate to find a group of adventurers to join up with on her first day as an adventurer. The group of four ventures off to a cave to hunt down goblins who have been abducting villagers. Unfortunately, what they believed to be an easy mission turns out to be anything but. The four adventurers are quickly outsmarted by the goblins and their optimistic new beginnings turn tragic. It’s going to take the one man who specializes in killing goblins to save even one of them: the Goblin Slayer.

Goblin Slayer Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)

1. He’s A Goblin Slayer

In the case of Goblin Slayer, both the show’s name and the character’s name are entirely accurate; Goblin Slayer slays goblins. There’s really nothing else in the world that Goblin Slayer is concerned with, outside of protecting his childhood friend Cow Girl. His life revolves solely around getting to town, finding out if there are any goblin slaying quests available and going out to complete them. In fact, he has been slaying goblins for so long and so successfully that he has reached the Silver adventurer rank without ever really pursuing stronger enemies. It’s inevitable that Goblin Slayer will continue his one-man crusade against goblins until he is physically incapable, or they are all wiped out.

2. Forever Armored

Although there’s probably a handsome man hiding under all that armor, few people get a chance to see Goblin Slayer’s face. He wears an armor that is worn and old but built to help him in his sole purpose of slaying goblins. As far as we’re aware, Goblin Slayer sleeps in his armor and does not even take off his helmet to eat or drink. If we’re to theorize why he’s always wearing armor, it’s probably because he knows that a goblin horde can attack at any time and it never hurts to be ready.

3. Efficiency & Mercilessness

We should add a caveat that this comes exclusively with regards to goblins. Goblin Slayer is prepared in ways only a man who has killed thousands of goblins can be. He knows their every strengths and weakness, the way they think, the way they live, the way they eat, and he prepares for every goblin slaying quest to ensure absolute success. When Goblin Slayer is faced with baby goblins, he has no second thoughts about killing them. For Goblin Slayer, there is only one solution to the goblin menace: kill them all.

4. He’s a Quick Thinker

Goblin Slayer is a quick thinker and that is best demonstrated when he starts to work with the Priestess. He quickly figures out the Priestess’s powers and limitations and puts them to use against goblins on the spot. Furthermore, he uses her powers in ways the Priestess would have never thought of using them, such as putting up a barrier that prevents goblins from escaping their burning base.

5. He’s a Loner

While he lives with Cow Girl and Cow Girl’s uncle, Goblin Slayer is virtually a loner. Ever since he lost his older sister and his entire village in a goblin attack, he’s been traumatized and unable to build relationships with other people. His life has been solely dedicated to the cause of slaying goblins and has left little time for making friends. The Priestess is the first person besides Cow Girl to have been able to build a rapport with Goblin Slayer. Fortunately, it seems that with the arrival of High Elf Archer, Lizard Priest, and Dwarf Shaman, Goblin Slayer may finally be getting out of his shell.

Final Thoughts

Rarely will you ever find an anime that is as upfront about what it’s about as Goblin Slayer. It’s a dark show about a Goblin Slayer slaying goblins that is incredibly satisfying to watch. Goblin Slayer’s extreme preparation for goblins, the moral conundrum that comes with some of his xenophobic actions, and his complete ruthlessness in the act of slaying goblins makes this straightforward story very compelling. What do you think of Goblin Slayer and his crusade against goblins? Do you support his crippling overspecialization or are you hoping to see Goblin Slayer venture out against different enemies?

Graduated from Carleton University in the capital of Canada with a degree in Film Studies and English, which basically sums me up real nice. I’m a sucker for a good story – written or visual – wherever I can find it, whether it’s in anime, video games, movies, books, albums or whatever else you can think of. If I’m not consuming, then I’m probably trying to make them myself.
