5. Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari (Tearmoon Empire)

  • Authors: Mochitsuki Nozomu
  • Genres: Comedy, Shoujo, Fantasy, Romance, School Life
  • Volumes: 8+
  • Published: September 2021—present

Kicking off our list today is an excellent villainess reincarnation story with a darkly comedic undertone.

Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari (Tearmoon Empire) follows Mia, a Princess who endured a torturous end thanks to the flames of revolution, and finally met her demise with the guillotine. But after her death, she awakens in the body of her twelve-year-old self, carrying a blood-stained diary and the knowledge of the terrifying future ahead.

Determined to avoid the guillotine, Mia sets about gathering allies to change her fate! Despite the gory setup, Tearmoon Empire is surprisingly light-hearted at times, and is absolutely perfect for fans of Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shite shimatta… (My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!).

The superb Silver Link—Bofuri, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!, The Misfit of Demon King Academy—will be producing Tearmoon Empire in 2023.

In the last two years, there’s one rom-com light novel that’s been on every reader’s lips: Otonari no Tenshi-sama ni Itsu no Ma ni ka Dame Ningen ni Sareteita Ken (The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten).

This sugary-sweet romance stars the reclusive bookworm Amane and the beautiful and untouchable Mahiru, both first-year high schoolers living out of home. By chance, they become acquainted, then become friends, and are soon almost dating? The gentle growth of feelings between Amane and Mahiru is genuine and heart-warming, reveling in every awkward moment and gesture. This is sure to be one of the biggest hits of the 2023 anime calendar, and we can’t wait to see our favorite couple come to life.

Project No.9—My Stepmom’s Daughter is My Ex, Bottom-tier Character Tomozaki, Higehiro—are producing The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten, set to air in January 2023.

1. Spy Kyoushitsu (Spy Classroom)

  • Authors: Takemachi
  • Genres: Action, Comedy, School Life
  • Volumes: 4+
  • Published: August 2021—present

We called it, folks. Earlier in the year, we gave a firm prediction that Spy Kyoushitsu (Spy Classroom) would get an anime adaptation, and we were proven right.

Following on the heels of other successful Cold War-era action stories like Spy x Family and Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu (Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut), Spy Classroom plunges us into a world of tense espionage and thrilling action.

The series follows a group of seven young girls who all possess an extraordinary talent for spycraft, led by their eclectic master Klaus. Together, they undertake dangerous missions for the benefit of their country—but first, they’ll need to beat Klaus at his own game to prove their worth as spies. Can these girls put aside their differences and team up to beat one of the world’s best spymasters?!

We can’t wait for January 2023, when studio Feel—The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax—brings Spy Classroom to our screens.
