Fire Force Preview (No Spoilers)

The Fire Force Brigade specializes in taking down “Infernals”—monstrous flaming creatures that result from spontaneous human combustion. Third generation pyrokinetic Shinra Kusakabe joins Company 8 of the Fire Force, determined to become a hero and figure out what really happened to his mother and brother during a mysterious fire twelve years ago. Among his new comrades is Maki Oze, a muscular soldier who takes her duties seriously, but gets easily distracted by cute things. Together, Company 8 will protect the public and uncover the reason why Infernals exist in the first place!

Maki Highlights (Spoilers Beyond This Point)

1. She’s a Musclebound Cutie

Maki stands out among other seasonal anime girls by having a jacked physique that most of us could only dream of. Due to her training as a Tokyo Army soldier, she can easily lift heavy objects that give grown men pause and can beat down two third-generation pyrokinetics in a fistfight. Unfortunately, she has a bit of a complex about her figure, not believing herself to be as feminine as the curvier Iris and Hibana. Don’t worry, Maki—you’re perfect just the way you are!

2. Her Fire Creatures are Adorable

Maki’s second-generation pyrokinetic abilities give her the power to control existing flames, so she’s an expert at deflecting and redirecting attacks. She also enjoys creating flame creatures called “Sputters” (“Pusu Pusu” in Japanese) that range from tiny fireballs to gigantic blobs, but always make cute little noises and follow her around. Of course, the no-nonsense Lieutenant Hinawa disapproves of her playing with fire outside of battle, so he douses the adorable critters in water or his own coffee as soon as she makes them.

3. She Can Hold Her Own in Battle

While working with the rest of her team, Maki usually takes on a defensive/reactionary role in battle. She can transform incoming attacks into Sputters, and then use them for her own purposes such as the “Sputter Comet” she threw at Setsuo the Infernal when he tried to kill an innocent girl. As mentioned before, she’s also a strong physical fighter who can deliver corkscrew punches and disarm foes with ease. She truly is the “Witch” of Company 8!

4. She Has a Strong Moral Compass

Maki joined the Tokyo Army to follow in her father’s footsteps, taking on much more training than was necessary and establishing herself as a very hard worker. However, she was dismayed at the idea of hurting people, so she decided to join the Fire Force Company 8 along with her military colleague Hinawa. She staunchly believes that the organization is ultimately a force for good and that she can lay Infernals to rest and help their families by being a fire soldier.

5. She’s a Hopeless Romantic at Heart

Despite her intense exterior, Maki is a hopeless romantic at heart. She’s constantly shipping members of her team, such as when she tells Iris that Shinra sweeping the nun off her feet might’ve been “the hand of fate” bringing them together. In Iris’ words, “You’re usually so cool, but that’s because you have a girly flower garden where your brain goes.” She even gets flustered when Arthur calls her a princess. It’s just too cute!

Final Thoughts

Maki is a vital member of Company 8 and is an absolute joy to behold whenever she’s on screen. We hope to see more from her in the coming episodes this season!
