surrounding it and for good reason – it’s shaping up to be one of the year’s standout titles. For this reason, we have found one of the many reasons why we’re loving it so much at this point is because of the quiet and adorable sidekick to the protagonist Kamado Tanjiro, his little sister, Nezuko! The story follows Tanjiro’s journey to becoming a Demon Slayer after his family is slaughtered by a demon. With his little sister turned into a demon herself, Tanjiro takes it upon himself to find a way to turn her back to normal, as well as to avenge his family.

Nezuko Highlights

1. Protective of Her Kin

Our first reason for loving Nezuko so much is due to her selflessness. When Tanjiro leaves to the nearby village to sell charcoal, the Kamado family is slaughtered by a demon, leaving Nezuko on the brink of death. However, in the grips of that terrible situation, Tanjiro finds Nezuko draped over her little brother in an attempt to protect him – a trait she never loses even after she is turned into a demon. Upon turning; however, she loses her sentience for a while, before Tanjiro is threatened by the Demon Slayer, Tomioka Gifu. Upon seeing her last remaining family member suffer some fairly vicious attacks, she snaps out of her demonic hunger and lunges at Gifu, getting in between him and Tanjiro.

2. Nezuko is Powerful!

After the incident with Tomioka Gifu, Tanjiro sets out to search for the fabled Urokodaki Sakonji – a trainer of Demon Slayers. While on their travels, Tanjiro gets a heavy whiff of the smell of blood and runs up to the temple nearby in order to make sure the people are alright, only to be met with the grizzly sight of a demon feasting on the dead. A fight ensues and Tanjiro can barely hold his own, pinned down by the demon with nothing but his little hatchet protecting him from the lethal fangs. In an instant, Nezuko sprints to the scene after fighting off her intense thirst for human blood and literally kicks the head off the demon attacking Tanjiro. Did somebody say “top goal scorer”?

3. Silent Presence

Nezuko has no dialogue in the series thus far after being turned into a demon; however, the lack of speech doesn’t take away from her presence – you’ll know when Nezuko isn’t around and you’ll probably miss her a little bit too! Since her mouth is perpetually gagged, Nezuko only communicates with gestures, facial expressions and the odd grunt here and there, but it doesn’t feel like her character is truly lacking as it is – perhaps a little sad that we know what her speaking voice is actually like, but her presence remains an easily recognisable fixture in the series.

4. Willpower

Not counting the very beginning, Nezuko has handled being a demon with incredible willpower, choosing to bend her own body to her will and not succumb to her demonic urges. Instead of eating people to replenish her energy, Nezuko sleeps for a very long time. This is partly due to Urokodaki hypnotising her, making her see every human being as a member of the family she lost, so we can’t give her all the credit, but still!

5. Absolutely Adorable

Nezuko could have taken a very bloody path upon turning into a demon; however, after regaining her consciousness somewhat, she is a very benign personality for the most part. Her personality is borderline stoicism, but her expressionlessness has its own charm and there’s nothing better than seeing Nezuko crawl into small boxes like a cat, or playing by herself as Tanjiro converses with other characters in the show!

Final Thoughts

Demon Slayer is a highly enjoyable anime for various reasons; however, its characters all come with their unique charm and the way it chooses to humanize its very antagonists is all the more interesting. Nezuko is a standout character for several reasons; however, there are definitely other reasons why she deserves attention – that’s where you come in! Drop a comment below and tell us why you love Nezuko too!

I’m South African, harbouring an obsession for anything remotely related to Japan, mostly anime, of course. I draw sometimes. Some people call me Naledi, it’s my real name, or something like that. People think I’m stoic because I don’t smile often (I do sometimes). I like languages. Hoshi-kun and Naledi are the same side of the same coin.
