Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These – Kaikou Preview (No Spoilers)
Die Neue These re-introduces the story of the 150-year war between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. Through the Galactic Empire, we see the story of Count Reinhard, and with the Free Planets Alliance, viewers are given the point of view of the young strategist, Yang Wen-Li. Despite their respective accomplishments and positions, not only do they have to face each other in battle, they also have to face the establishment of their respective nations.
Reinhard von Lohengramm Highlights (Spoilers Beyond this Point)
1. He Has Amazing Charisma
While he is a bit below Wen-Li in being a master strategist, he makes up for it with superior charisma. Despite how dark and cold he presents himself, people gravitate towards him. He sees the value of those who work under him and if he sees potential in them, he will be the first to acknowledge and use it. He is simply a natural leader who knows the culture of his nation, and how to appeal to his soldiers.
2. He Has Ambition
Unlike his rival Wen-Li who wants a simple life, Reinhard wants to be the new Kaiser and make a difference. He is willing to do that by any legal means possible. After losing his sister to the Kaiser, he dedicates his life to gain power. While his methods and goals may seem outdated and like a conqueror from the ancient age of empires, when audiences consider the conditions and system he was raised in, nobody can blame him in his thinking that becoming the Kaiser is the only true power one can have.
3. He Has the Right Motivations
While the Empire is presented as a brutal monarchy, Reinhard is motivated by a sense of justice and giving equality. After his father sold his sister to the Kaiser and being raised by low-level nobility and amongst commoners as his peers, Reinhard truly wants to make a difference and make things better for everyone. Even though his goals also include galactic domination, he genuinely wants to make it a better place.
4. He Is a Good Friend and Brother
While his goals are big and grand, he never forgets when he came from and the motivations his goals. His motivation stems from how his father sold his sister, the sole maternal figure in his life, to the Kaiser. Even when he succeeds as a battlefield commander, he continues to visit his sister when gets some R&R. In addition to being a caring brother, he is very loyal to his friends, who all come from various backgrounds. His most trusted companion is Kircheis, his best friend since childhood. Many viewers can agree they share a bromance considering how they are always inseparable. Whenever they are in private, Reinhard actually doesn’t want to be referred to by his superior rank. Many can’t deny that without Kircheis, Reinhard would be lost.
5. He Is Hated by the Establishment
Another quality both Wen-Li and Reinhard share is that they are hated by the establishments of the governments they serve under, and for similar and different reasons. For starters, they are both disliked for how their successes have made them popular with the people and younger soldiers, and how it has threatened their power. However, the reasons start to diverge when people think Reinhard only got to his position with his sister being a concubine of the Kaiser. While she did have some influence in him getting into an academy, other than that, he succeeded based on his own merits and determination, and there are a good number of people who don’t want to give him credit for that.
Through the eyes of Reinhard and how he contrasts with both Wen-Li and his peers in the Empire, audiences will probably re-evaluate what makes a good government that serves its citizens. When it comes to debates like Communism/Socialism, many of its supporters dispute that it only failed because of bad leadership. But when it comes to absolute rule monarchies, Reinhard will also make you feel the same way in regards to that. As you watch this series, Reinhard will make you see things in a unique kind of perspective that you have never thought before as it contributes to the debate of nature vs. nurture.
