Happy October! It is finally the spooky season! Haunted houses, scary stories, pumpkin patches, candy—there are so many things to enjoy during Halloween. For anime fans, horror and supernatural anime are just one more thing! Be prepared, these are some of the scariest ghosts to appear in anime!

5. The Talisman Woman from Yami Shibai (Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai)

Starring in Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories, a uniquely animated series of short horror stories, the mysterious Talisman Woman haunts a young man. One day, he comes home to find talismans stuck to his table. Upon attempting to rip them off, the Talisman Woman appears behind him. Shocked, he calls the police to arrest her, but while she is in police custody, more and more talismans appear in his house, leading to a terrifying ghostly ending. While the short episode reveals little about the true nature behind his specter, her haunting of the poor young man is enough to give anyone chills.

4. Kunekune from Urasekai Picnic (Otherside Picnic)

Appearing as a smoky apparition with twisted limbs and a hole in the center of its face, the Kunekune causes a sickening feeling to anyone who looks at it. Additionally, the victim’s mind will go blank, and their limbs will go numb. Despite all this, the victim feels the need to continue looking at the Kunekune. Meanwhile, the Kunekune can enter the person’s mind. When defeated, the Kunekune leaves behind nothing but a mirror stone in which humans’ reflections cannot appear. In the episode it stars in, it almost kills a main protagonist, revealing how dangerous this entity really is. From its terrifying faceless appearance and its odd and mystifying abilities, the Kunekune is a horrifying anime ghost!

3. Mei Misaki from Another

Mei Misaki is the female protagonist of the popular horror anime Another. She is a gloomy, mysterious, and solitary character that does not seem interested in being friends with other people. To go along with her enigmatic personality, she has a tragic background involving witnessing her sister being violently murdered. When the male main character, Kouichi Sakakibara, encounters her at school, he initially believes she is a ghost due to the other students and teacher treating her as if she does not exist. Eventually, it is revealed that she has been “sacrificed” to prevent the “curse of Class 3-3.” It is impossible to explain more about this character without spoiling the amazing anime that is Another, so we’ll just encourage you to watch it if Mei intrigues you!

2. The Intersection Bishounen from Itou Junji: Collection (The Junji Ito Collection)

As hinted by his name, the Intersection Bishounen appears as a handsome man at an intersection. Girls come to him to request their romance-related fortunes. Unfortunately for those girls, the Intersection Bishounen has the ability to influence any girl who asks him a question, and the girls he gains influence on usually end up committing suicide. Additionally, the Intersection Bishounen seems to be able to influence girls to tell their friends about him, giving him an unlimited buffet of victims. He once caused a mass suicide among the girls residing in the town he haunts. Due to his dangerous abilities, we believe he’d be terrifying to go up against.

1. Ryomen Sukuna from Jujutsu Kaisen (TV)

Also called the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna is one of the primary antagonists of Jujutsu Kaisen (TV). While he used to be a human sorcerer, he became a cursed spirit after his death. As a cold-hearted and sadistic character, Sukuna considers himself superior to other people and usually treats his opponents as beneath himself. He is mean-spirited to his host, Yuji Itadori, constantly belittling him and seeming to enjoy his suffering. Being considered a “special grade cursed spirit,” Sukuna is one of the most powerful characters in the entire series and often defeats other characters without much trouble. He is not only strong, speedy, durable, and skilled in hand-to-hand combat, but he also possesses high intelligence and adaptability. Being knowledgeable about cursed techniques, he can figure out the opponent’s magic and come up with a counterattack easily. Needless to say, he’s a formidable character not many people would like to go up against!
