5 Underwhelming Anime of Spring 2021

Another anime season and another bevy of anime that just couldn’t quite impress us here at Honey’s Anime. This spring 2021 season there have been some truly spectacular anime series like 86 and To Your Eternity. Sadly, the anime we’re about to list aren’t even close to being considered good and truly disappointed us in various ways. Here are our 5 Underwhelming Anime of Spring 2021...be prepared as these shows could have been impressive but truly have done little to impress anyone.

5. Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu Ω (How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω)

  • Episodes: 10
  • Aired: April 2021 – Currently Airing

Diablo—aka once normal guy thrown into his favorite MMO, Cross Reverie—has somehow gotten used to his new life as a demon lord but that doesn’t mean his new world isn’t full of dangers. After randomly landing in front of a half-naked woman, Diablo learns that a new threat is quickly rising up. Once more Diablo will need to rely on his lovely companions Rem and Shera to stop this new evil before it can ruin his new life. The demon lord needs to once more prove his worth but, can these unknown enemies finally spell defeat for our Diablo?!

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord season 1 was everything we wanted from a harem/ecchi isekai and we were more than happy to see a season 2 release this spring 2021. Sadly, the second season has proven that sometimes more of the same isn’t always a good thing. How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω feels like a copy and paste of the first season with the same ecchi scenes, the same way battles play out and even the same story just with changed names and slightly altered plot lines. Overall, How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω has been more boring than enjoyable and while we hope the end will repair our issues with the series, it won’t save our final opinions of this second season as a whole.

4. Blue Reflection Ray

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: April 2021 – Currently Airing

Ruka Hanari hasn’t found her new school to be that welcoming as a transfer student. Due to her personality, Ruka can’t find common ground with anyone and her school life is destined to be pretty boring. One day, Ruka runs into a strange girl and ends up picking up a small blue ring dropped by the stranger. Little does Ruka realize that picking this blue ring up has placed her into a strange battle between red ring and blue ring users called Reflectors. Now forced into this battle, Ruka will need to rise up and become a Reflector herself.

Blue Reflection Ray should have been an enjoyable anime seeing as how it is based on the video game Blue Reflection—though Ray isn’t the same story as the game—and has two things we love, cute anime girls and magic. On paper, Blue Reflection Ray seems exciting but after several episodes, we find ourselves pretty unimpressed. While the animation isn’t too bad, the story isn’t really hooking us and the themes are quite predictable. Blue Reflection Ray isn’t completely unsalvageable but for now, we don’t know if we want to watch the planned 24 episodes it has in store for us…

3. Subarashiki Kono Sekai The Animation (The World Ends with You The Animation)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: April 2021 - Currently Airing

Loner Neku Sakuraba can be often found drowning the world out with his headphones to avoid everyone and everything. Neku’s world changes quickly one day when he wakes up and discovers no one can hear him or see him and he has odd creatures gunning to take him down. Dubbed “Noise”, these creatures are part of a death game Neku has been forced into where he will need to rely on strange “Pins” that can give him various abilities to take down these odd threats. Neku has always been a loner but he will need to ally himself with strangers if he wishes to survive and somehow escape the Reaper’s Game.

We here at Honey’s Anime couldn’t have hyped up The World Ends with You The Animation any more seeing as we are huge fans of the game. That’s why we were so disappointed by the lackluster adaptation we’ve been forced to watch this spring 2021 season. The World Ends with You The Animation is like a quick retelling of the game but lacks the intensity the game delivered in almost every facet. The animation is okay at best and the story feels extremely rushed. We aren’t saying to not watch The World Ends with You The Animation but don’t go in with high anticipation as you will be let down like we were.

2. Sayonara Watashi no Cramer (Farewell, My Dear Cramer)

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: April 2021 – Currently Airing

The female Japanese soccer scene is fading away quickly but that doesn’t mean all schools are ready to give up on the sport. Nozomi Onda once played with the boys' soccer team in middle school due to a belief that boys are better than girls in soccer, but that thought process is about to change. Nozomi is convinced by her friend Midori and her former coach to join the Warabi Seinan High School’s girls’ soccer team and help them prove their worth. Nozomi will realize that within this female team lie players quite capable of becoming legends and she will need to remove her preconceived notion of how girls play soccer.

With many anime focusing on male-centered sports, we were intrigued by the thought of a female soccer anime series. Farewell, My Dear Cramer should have gripped us and made us cheer for Nozomi and her teammates but instead, we sighed as we continued to witness meh animation and weak matches. Add to this goofy dialogue and mediocre characters and we kind of want to say farewell to this anime as quickly as possible. Let’s hope more anime creators take a risk with female-oriented sports series but look at Farewell, My Dear Cramer as a muse for what not to do with their show.

1. Cestvs: The Roman Fighter

  • Episodes: 11
  • Aired: April 2021 – Currently Airing

Forced to fight, Cestvs is like most slaves. If he wants his freedom, he will need to win fight after fight. If Cestvs can reach 100 victories, his master promises freedom to the tired warrior. However, is this freedom obtainable or will Cestvs be like his friend? Another doomed warrior that will die in a pool of blood and guts… All Cestvs knows for certain is he stands before many others with the same dream of freedom and like him, they are willing to kill to obtain it.

How many Roman gladiator anime have been released? Not many, as it turns out. Cestvs: The Roman Fighter could have been one of the better fighting anime of the spring season but what we received was a bland anime series with weak visuals, weak animation, and a truly bland story. Cestvs: The Roman Fighter feels like a fight…to stay interested and we have to wonder if we can accomplish this task with each episode we must watch.

Final Thoughts

Many of you otaku out there—especially fans of the series on this list—probably are making the argument that these anime haven’t completed yet and thus there is still time. Many of you could be right and these series could come back from their underwhelming fate but for now, they have failed to impress many anime viewers and that makes them quite lackluster.
