Fox spirits sure are a lively bunch of creatures! The yokai in “Huyao Xiao Hongniang” have a nice little arrangement with their lovers after they die; both the human and yokai can reincarnate to possibly continue a relationship in the next life! Some of us aren’t sure we would want to remember past lives by being hit with a wooden mallet though, ouch! It sure would be handy to know what your past life was, especially if you were due a royal inheritance! Well, whatever your past life is (or isn’t) this is a list that will focus a bit on reincarnation, with a side of action and comedy!
Unfortunately, reincarnation has a bad side, sometimes people you don’t like end up following you into the next life, what a bother! Relationships can be complicated enough, but can you imagine having a spousal fight for centuries, or facing off against your enemy for centuries? From swordplay to straight up comedy reincarnation is featured in a ton of anime! We’ll also be focusing a bit on relationships, since matchmaking is a thing in this anime. You’ll have plenty to watch! Below you will find 6 anime like Huyao Xiao Hongniang!

1. Renai Boukun (Love Tyrant)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: Apr, 2017 – Jun, 2017
Guri is one crazy cupid, and she’s also hilariously inept when it comes to matters of love! It’s a good thing Seiji is there to help with her matchmaking antics! When Guri shows up at Seiji’s front door he learns that Guri needs him to kiss someone or she’ll die in 24 hours. It turns out Guri misspelled a name on the “Kiss Note”, which ended up being Seiji’s name instead. Reluctantly agreeing with her, Seiji works up the courage to help her out! Fox Spirit Matchmaker has plenty of situations where the couples were a bit confused, just like in Love Tyrant!
Both shows have hilarious situations involving romance too! Poor Seiji gets roped into helping Guri, sort of like how the monk Bai Yuechu in “Fox Spirit Matchmaker” is roped into helping. “Love Tyrant” might be a bit too much for some people due to a ton of violence being part of the comedy, but get past that and you’ll have a great time! Even though “Love Tyrant” can be a sort of a crazy show at times, it means well, and certainly deserves a watch if you liked “Huyao Xiao Hongniang”!

2. Fushigi Yugi OVA 2
- Episodes: 6
- Aired: May, 1997 – Oct, 1998
Instead of using wooden mallets to restore memory like in “Fox Spirit Matchmaker”, Jewels are used to restore them in “Fushigi Yugi OVA 2”, which is much more pleasant. An enemy from the past returns, and follows our heroes through multiple lives; don’t you hate it when that happens? There are 7 jewels of memory, and the baddies seek to be born into the life that they desire after stealing the jewels. If the demons get to the jewels first, then Tamahome will disappear from existence, it’s up to our heroes to find them first!
Like Huyao Xiao Hongniang, Fushigi Yugi OVA 2 deals with complicated relationships, really complicated relationships! Miaka loves Tamahome, and she will do anything to be together with him; meanwhile the demons try and separate them by any means necessary, trying to take the Jewels for themselves. Unlike Fox Spirit Matchmaker, Fushigi Yugi OVA 2 was made in the late 90’s and shows its age a bit; it’s an oldy but a goody! If you liked Fox Spirits and their matchmaking antics, give this one a shot!
3. Touka Gettan
- Episodes: 26
- Aired: Apr, 2007 – Sep, 2007
Touka Gettan can be a very confusing anime to watch for some people, it’s almost like putting a puzzle together! Be sure to watch all the episodes and you will surely fit the story together! Touka Gettan is a spin off from “Moonlight Lady”, which released in the early 2000s. There are several characters like Momoka, who is the embodiment of a goddess, and others who may be the reincarnation of something. Touka is widely believed to be the reincarnation of an ancient hero named Isamihiko due to his abilities with his “Stone Sword”.
Like in Fox Spirit Matchmaker, reincarnation is involved; Touka Gettan has many situations where issues from past lives surface, and complicated relationships are explored! Kamitsumihara is a land full of mystery, magic, romance, and complicated romance at that! Touka and Momoka have a destiny, which could make legend a reality! While this can be a bit hard to follow for newcomers, it’s certainly worth a look if you liked Huyao Xiao Hongniang!

Cao reveals himself to be a man with a powerful guardian spirit and must now help Xia once again, but this time from the demons that infest the street!
Rakshasa Street is a massive place full of demons and people with guardian spirits. Cao’s guardian spirit happens to be from The Three Kingdoms era of China, and is quite powerful! Both Fox Spirit Matchmaker and Rakshasa Street are Chinese anime filled with action, spirits, and demons! 6. Nuwa Chengzhang Riji
- Episodes: 30
- Aired: Apr, 2016 – Nov, 2016
Nuwa Chengzhang Riji is another Chinese anime about reincarnation, and follows a girl rumored to be a Chinese goddess. This show takes more of a comedic form than others of the list, and sometimes breaks the fourth wall! In the early episodes, Chang Li tries to get Xiao Xiao Feng to remember she’s really the goddess “Nuwa”. After conventional methods fail, he tries using violence instead! Poor Xiao Xiao ends up in a hospital bed, while Chang tries one last attempt with a talisman. Nuwa is awakened, and he takes a selfie with her as proof for Xiao Xiao when she turns back into a normal girl.
Both shows deal with reincarnation and restoring memories of a previous life. Bai Yuechu is the reincarnation of the legendary demon taoist Dongfang in “Fox Spirit Matchmaker”, and would probably get along just fine with Xiao Xiao if they ever met! Chang Li could really use that memory mallet for poor Xiao Xiao at the beginning! Watch Nuwa Chengzhang Riji if you liked “Fox Spirit Matchmaker”!
Final Thoughts
Reincarnation is a concept taught by many people in the world, and is an intriguing concept! Who were you in a past life? perhaps you were a legendary thief, or maybe someone of royal lineage? Concepts like this are what drive many to psychics to get a better read on their past lives, though most of those people are slightly disappointed, and no one really knows if what a psychic says is true. Family history is a bit easier to wrap one’s head around, and has more substance when it comes to knowing yourself a little better in real life.
We all have dreams sometimes though, and some are so vivid they may convince you that you were reincarnated! Whatever the case may be let’s just hope that no one has any evil spirits after them seeking revenge or something. We’re also going to be hiding our wooden mallets! We hope you enjoyed our list, do you have any favorite anime of this type that aren’t on the list? We would like to read your comments below!
