Sci-fi anime, mixed with magic elements and a bit of school setting, can give birth to little masterpieces that leave you speechless. It's the case of Mahouka Koukou No Rettousei. Born as a light novel from Tsutomu Satou's pen and adapted into an anime in 2014, it has amazing action moments, the right amount of sci-fi, magic elements, fights among magicians, a harem of beautiful girls, politic plot and a deep bond between a brother and a sister. When an anime touches so many contexts, and still manages to develop everything in the right way, keeping you glued to the screen, it has to be considered a masterpiece! Tatsuya Shiba, and his sister Miyuki enter the Magic High School: Tatsuya ends up in the “weed” class, which is the low-ranked one, while his sister ends up in the “bloom” class, which is the high-ranked one. We all loved the way Tatsuya managed to demonstrate to everyone his worth, in spite being a “weed”! Sadly, 26 episodes can be a very short time when you enjoy watching anime too much, so we are sure you all finished watching Mahouka Koukou craving for more! Don't worry, we created this list to help you find relief, and enjoy once again all the aspects you loved in it!

1. Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry (Chivalry of a Failed Knight)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 2015 – December 2015
Ikki Kurogane attends Hagun Academy, in order to become a real Mage-Knight. The problem, though, is that he is only an F-rank, and being his magical power very low he is called the “Worst One”. Furthermore, a terrible threat awaits him: if he will not be able to improve and gain credits, he will have to repeat the same year. Although his situation is terrible, the situation changes when the new headmaster – Kurono Shinguji – offers him a new chance. In fact, she tells him that if he can win the “Seven Star Sword Festival”, he will be able to graduate in spite of everything. Problems arise when Ikki meets a new student, Stella Vermillion. She is a princess and a master at using magic and swords. Some circumstances put Ikki and Stella one against the other, with a promise: the one who lose will have to become the other's slave for the rest of their life!
As for the similarities Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry shares with Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, the first, eye-catching one is that both anime involve a magic high school. Furthermore, both protagonists – Ikki and Tatsuya – despite their physical skills, are ranked the lowest in magic, but as low-ranked as they are, they don't care. Their only problem is the fact that they have to deal with the student considered as their polar opposite: strong, talented, skilled. What's more, both our protagonists have a strange relationship with their sisters, where their sisters are madly in love with their brothers. Another similarity is that Ikki, as much as Tatsuya, is despised by his entire family, except by Shizuku, his sister. Both storylines are amazing, and the character development is very well done, so much so that you feel like you're a part of it. It's not a stretch to say that Rakudai Kishi is the next step you should take after watching Mahouka Koukou!

2. Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)
- Episodes: 110
- Aired: January 1988 – March 1997
The story takes place in a far away future, where mankind managed to colonize a large part in the universe. Since 150 years there's been a war between two factions: the Galactic Empire, headed by the Goldenbaum dinasty, and the Free Planets Alliance opposing it. The story revolves around two protagonists, Reinhard von Lohengramm, and Yang Wen-li. Reinhard is a young admiral in the Galactic Empire, who hates the emperor, and the Goldenbaum dinasty itself, so much so that he prefers the military environment. This skilled soldier will try to unlock the situation between the two factions, and overturn the emperor's power. Yang Wen-li, instead, is a commodore of the Free Planets Alliance, almost revered as a hero because of his military skills and deeds, but he is lazy and hates war. These two different men will deal with political struggles, subordinates and battles, and, in the end, they will manage to turn the tables and face the biggest war that will change their life forever.
Although Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu has a military theme, it shares some important similarities with Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei. First of all, they both have a futuristic setting, and share a world deeply shaken by class struggles. In both, the sister's figure has an important role until the end, and the complex relationship both protagonists share with their sisters, is what define both of them later on. What's more, both these series explore political corruption, plots and the nature of politics itself. In both there are extremist groups, that are the starting point to explore the reasons why such groups exist and how they are created. Furthermore, we find in both a well-constructed and analyzed cast of characters, and both protagonists are well versed in politics, and due to some circumstances in the past, both bear a personal burden. These two anime are far away in time, but if you liked Mahouka Koukou, you will find Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu just as interesting!

3. Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index)
This story revolves around Touma Kamijou, a high school student in Academy City, a city where students train to develop their psychic abilities. Touma is your usual high school boy who tends to stay away from trouble, and is smart and easy-going. His only flaw is his esper ability: he has the lowest ranking. His only ability is the “Imagine Breaker”, a power that allows him to delete other's abilities. He couldn't care less about his low-ranked position, but the situation changes when he meets Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a strange girl who is chased after by a dangerous organization. Touma decides to protect her, and that's how the story enters its peak!
Toaru Majutsu no Index and Mahouka Koukou share many similarities. Touma and Tatsuya are both characters with immense mental skills, and both are able to create solutions in complicated situations. Basically, they are overpowered compared to the rest of the characters, and yet they are low-ranked, but their condition doesn't affect them in the less. Both these anime feature science and magic, and they both have a school setting. Where Tatsuya fights to protect her sister, Touma fights to protect Index, who is as lovestruck for him as Miyuki is for her brother. We can say that, although Toaru Majutsu no Index has a comedy part as well, if you liked Mahouka Koukou, you have to give it a try!

4. Grisaia no Kajitsu (The Fruit of Grisaia)
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: October 2014 – December 2014
The story takes place in the Mihama Academy, which is defined to be an exclusive school, but is actually a seclusion school. Mihama Academy hosts peculiar students who are educated far from outer influences, and the story revolves around five girls, busy with their daily routines. Their lives change when they meet a new student, Yuuji Kazami, who is the first male in the group. It's exactly Yuuji's presence what starts to make things crumble in their life: he will gradually get to know each of them, and will discover their difficult pasts, forcing them to face their demons instead of looking away.
Once again, in Grisaia no Kajitsu we find the overpowered protagonist theme, exactly as in Mahouka Koukou. Tatsuya and Yuuji are both cold, serious and incredibly skilled in fighting. They have a dark past, don't want to share it with others, and yet they try to help their friends all along the way. They both have a sister, who is considered to be better in their family than they are. Furthermore, in both these anime there's a harem of beautiful girls revolving around Tatsuya and Yuuji, but the ecchi component is absent, or better, is not taken to its extreme. Although Grisaia has a psychological and drama side with it, we can say for sure that if you liked Mahouka Koukou, you will find the atmosphere in Grisaia just as fascinating!
