Every once in a while an anime series comes along that really wows you. It exceeds expectations not only in story but in art direction as well. This is the case with the 2010 anime, Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin. The mix of comedy, supernatural and sci-fi made this anime stand out amongst its rivals. While school anime are abundant, Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin excels in art direction drawing the viewer deeper into the plot and surrounding you with an eerie heir that is unique to this anime. To keep the thirst for Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin alive, here are some anime that are likely to get you past the dismal absence of new content.
Similar Anime to Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin (Occult Academy)
1. Steins;Gate 0
- Episodes: 23
- Aired: April 2018- Currently Airing as of May 2018
Steins;Gate 0 is a follow-up anime to the critically acclaimed Steins;Gate. It takes place after the main character, Okabe has jumped around so many different world lines that he is losing his sanity trying to keep everyone he cares about alive. The plot develops as technology in this universe advances bringing him to a cruel and unusual encounter with someone he believed to be gone.
Time travel is a strong influencer in both anime making it the perfect bridge into another strong and influential sci-fi anime. While comedy is lacking from Steins;Gate 0, it is an excellent cross into the more serious aspects of Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin. Along with the sci-fi aspect, there is an air of mystery to the animation that can only be done by the work of an exceptionally skilled team of animators. The art direction in Steins;Gate 0 is sure to keep you on your feet until the very last episode just as it did in Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin.

2. Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (Assassination Classroom)
- Episodes: 22
- Aired: January 2015- June 2015
Ansatsu Kyoushitsu is a goofier blend of both sci-fi and comedy. This school comedy stood out as an instant classic during its debut in 2015 and has remained a hit in the anime community. While the students in class 3-E are apparently hopeless, they do have the assets to transform themselves into a deadly collection of assassins. While this may be many a shonen-lovers dream, it comes with the heavy promise to kill the teacher that is such a help to them. However, the possibility of failure is accompanied with the destruction of the world.
The animation in this series takes on a more light-hearted style to lessen the darkness of the matters at hand. While Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin seeks to add drama from its dark and ominous art direction, Ansatsu Kyoushitsu does the opposite. It makes you comfortable with the unusual setting of death and destruction and rather than being devastated, it brings a whole new element of fun.
With a smiling alien teacher at its forefront, Ansatsu Kyoushitsu makes an easy parallel to the destruction of the world by the aliens in Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin. However, while the aliens in the Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin are terrifying it, is hard to see the child-loving, alien teacher, Koro-sensei as much of a threat. This comedic and deadly school has secrets that yearn to be understood and are bound to captivate anime fans.

3. Orange
- Episodes: 13
- Aired: July 2016- September 2016
A blend of time travel and romance never hurt anyone, especially when done in a gut-wrenching roller coaster of emotions. Orange tells the tale of Naho Takamiya as she receives letters from her future self. While first thinking that it is a joke, she disregards the letters and does as she fancies. Much to her dismay, the letters are true and disobeying them comes with drastic consequences. Naho not only grows as a character but also creates lasting relationships with those who she struggles to form a bond with.
While this anime is much slower paced than Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin, it allows for a new take on a more trivial time travel scale. For those looking for more romance with a shoujo element, this is the right blend into a story with more emotional twists and turns, rather than physical. As an anime that keeps you on your toes in a different way, Orange is ideal for those seeking an anime with more ambiguity. There are no shonen elements or action scenes but Orange delivers its excitement and drama with a softer and less in your face way.
While Orange and Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin may not have strong ties, they focus on the theme of friendship and bonds as a way of getting through difficult times. Time travel is also loosely similar but while Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin is more obvious about sending people as a direct way of resolving a problem, Orange takes a slightly more hands-off approach with its letters getting delivered to Naho by pure chance. Orange is ideal for any looking for a school anime that is unforgettable and wholesome.

4. Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)
- Episodes: 22
- Aired: October 2011- April 2012
A loosely labeled school anime, Yukiteru spends his days at school socializing on his cell phone with two god-like entities who grant him a diary. This is no ordinary diary, as it puts him in line to be a possible successor to the god he was conversing with. All of the characters who receive the diary are flawed to an outrageous degree in which most of them are psychopaths, the most apparent one being Yuno.
Yuno brings a love aspect to the relationship that buries Yukiteru and introduces an unconventional romance element into the story. Combined with her bloodthirsty lust, it makes a perfect gore-filled action anime as well. Time travel also makes an appearance in this anime as we see the characters relive this sequence over and over in a time loop.
Whereas most time jumping anime are linear, such as in Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin, we see a more cyclical pattern that captivates the viewer and draws you in psychologically to end up with a craving for the psychological mind twist that is Mirai Nikki.

5. Another
- Episodes: 12
- Aired: January 2012- March 2012
A school anime as dark and ominous as possible, Another is a psychological thriller that brings you into the world through the means of violence and passivity. Superstition is strong in this anime as Mei Misaki is unseen by the rest of the world, all that is except Kouichi Sakakibara. Rather than leaving her to her own devices, he is drawn in by Mei and seeks to understand the situation further. He is soon drawn into a brutal superstition that only he can begin to unravel.
P.A. Works hit the nail on the head with this anime by creating a creepy and somber tone that is apparent from start to finish. With twists and turns that consistently put you on the edge of your seat and an animation style that leaves you wanting more, it is the perfect follow-up to Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin.
This anime is well animated in a similar shadowy animation style to Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin that keeps you drawn in and hooked until the very last episode. However, this is not a comedy and should not be approached as such. The serious subject matter in this anime will keep you engrossed until the very end.
6. Blood+
- Episodes: 50
- Aired: October 2005- September 2006
Blood+ is a supernatural anime in which the main character, Saya, wards off blood thirsty beasts by killing them with her own blood. She is portrayed as a normal high school student up until her encounter with the beasts. As we follow Saya on her adventures, the meaning behind her existence is revealed as well as a flawed military behind the dangerous creatures.
Saya is a strong female character that is very similar to Maya in Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin. She has a hard exterior but is also very practical in her response. Her emotions are realistic, drawing you into her character and making her relatable. While not the daughter of the headmaster, Saya’s family is crammed with drama and challenges of their own.
Blood+ is an action-packed anime that will not leave you disappointed. The tensions are slow building but make it all worth it for the big reveals. As an anime that will not disenchant, the 50 episodes are the perfect follow up to the absence of Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin.
