1. Toradora

  • Episodes: 25
  • Aired: Oct 2008 to Mar 2009

Ryuji Takasu has an intimidating face and this often scares his school mates. They often shy away from him after labelling him as a delinquent. She has a fiery temper and is known throughout the school as the Palmtop Tiger. As these two cross paths one day, their fates will change. Committed to helping each other get their crushes, this romantic comedy shows their endeavours and the efforts that they put in!

Yahari and ToraDora are similar in the respect that both share a high school setting. At some point, Yahari talks about high school love to a great extent while the premise of high school love occurs in ToraDora throughout the series. In Yahari, Hachiman is a social outcast who has a problem blending into the social construct within the school. In ToraDora, all of the main characters are weird in their own ways and although they may have friends, they still have issues fitting in. In fact, both main characters share a common trait - their sanpaku eyes and that made everyone around them distant themselves from them. ToraDora is also a light hearted rom-com to enjoy such that if you enjoyed Yahari, you can find the same atmosphere and similar characters in it!

2. ReLIFE

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Jul 2016

Arata Kaizaki is a 27 year old NEET. After losing his job due to unknown circumstances, Arata is approached by a representative from the ReLIFE Laboratory. He takes up the offer and sets about his high school life. Along the way, Arata touches the lives of the various friends he made and even improved on it. However, at the end of the 1 year, all of them will forget about him. It is up to him to make this 1 year redo of his life the most meaningful one ever and to find the answer to living a much more fulfilled life in the future.

ReLIFE shares many aspects with Yahari. Although ReLIFE is set in a more positive atmosphere, it discusses about the high school life and the essence that is youth - vibrant and full of energy. Originally introduced as flawed characters, both characters from their series shows a significant improvement due to the environment that they are placed. Both are altruistic in nature and will willingly help others despite appearing otherwise. The romance factor has always been a sideline plot in the beginning but slowly picks up in the later episodes, providing for a more diverse and fulfilling story.

3. Bakemonogatari

  • Episodes: 15
  • Aired: Jul 2009 to Jun 2010

Spiritual encounters, oddities and paranormal activities are normal occurrences in the world of Bakemonogatari. The main character of the series, Koyomi Araragi is a survivor of a vampire attack during Golden Week. After being saved by a mysterious man who goes by Oshino Meme, Araragi aids other characters afflicted by oddities by referring them to Meme. One such individual is the weightless Senjougahara Hitagi. Araragi immediately sought the help of his benefactor once again to cure Hitagi of her problem. Who will Araragi run into next and will he be able to save them from their oddities?

Bakemonogatari had always been an abstract anime. Similar to Yahari, it utilizes soliloquy to explain the character's thoughts and actions. If anything, the whole anime is interesting in the way that every aspect of the story is explained through Araragi's mind. Both characters are champions of the mind and philosophers - the anime is never boring due to their inner monologues alone. Both deals heavily on the psychological genre which makes it extremely captivating and engrossing.

Just as though it was all over, Subaru awoke to the same scene as when he had first met her. Will he eventually solve the mystery of his predicament?

The characters of both stories shares similar viewpoints. Subaru is basically Hachiman if he were to be stuck in a ridiculous scenario. In both animes, there will always be a fair share of light hearted scenes but it does not mask the true plot of the story. Eventually when the situation gets very tense, the plot thickens. If you're looking for an anime to keep you engrossed in watching it as well as an anime that is both light hearted and serious at the same time, give Re:Zero a try!

5. Watashi ga Motenai (WataMote)

Due to this, she expects her high school life to proceed along successfully after the numerous experiences she has in the field of dating. The real world is still fraught with mysteries that she is unaware of. Join Kuroi as she tries to overcome her social anxiety with her ridiculous antics to become the most popular girl in school.

WataMote highlights the same issues of society just like Yahari. While Yahari emphasizes on group dynamics and the general problem of society, WataMote emphasizes it on a personal level on how an individual face troubles blending in. Kuroi is a bona fide social outcast with an apparent lack of social skills. WataMote battles the sad truth of loneliness while Yahari is more on the side of isolation. Nevertheless, both series makes you question the constructs of society and the pressure it places on the introverts and outcasts. If you like to question about society just like in Yahari, definitely give WataMote a try. It's a tad bit different in terms of the concepts discussed but the overall message is similar.

6. Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru

That is until Eita suddenly receives a confession from Masuzu Natsukawa, a beautiful girl and the new transfer student. In reality, she finds love just as much as a hassle as him and only confessed to him such that others will stop asking her out every day. Cunning and manipulative, she even threatened to release Eita's personal journal should he betray her. The quiet days of Eita is soon over with these new developments.

Both characters in both series share the same kind of monologue and thought inducing ideals. They are forced to join a school club and be part of something that they never ever wanted to be a part of in the first place. The deuteragonist also happens to be a sharp tongue and cunning girl (also tsundere) who often keeps the main character in check. Both series are centralized in high school as well with the plot gearing towards self-improvement during the teenage years. Both series are light hearted, has the familiar high school setting atmosphere and your occasional humorous situation like a typical rom-com anime.

Similar Anime to Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru / Similar Anime to My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU

1. Boku wa tomodachi ga sukunai (I Don't Have Many Friends)

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Oct 2011 – Dec 2011

Kodaka Hasegawa is transferred in the St Chronica's Academy. Because of his half blond hair inherited from his late mother and his look, he is mistaken for a delinquent. This is why it's very difficult for him to make any friends, even if he tries to be nice to people.

One day, he crosses into Yozora Mikazuki, a loner girl like him, while she is talking to her imaginary friend. Because both of them realizes that they are really lonely and want friends, Yozora will decide to create a club for people without friends, like them.

As in Oregairu, the main character finds himself involved in a club where he doesn't really want to enter at first and lots of weird characters will join them. All the members find it difficult to make friends because of their temper and are mistaken by other people.

2. NHK ni youkoso! (Welcome to the N.H.K. )

  • Episodes: 24
  • Aired: Jul 2006 – Dec 2006

Tatsuhiro Satô lived several years as a hikikomori, without working or leaving his apartment. Despised and badly viewed because of that, he meets a young girl who finds him interesting just by being a hikikomori. That girl, Misaki Nakahara, proposes to help him. This is because he would be helpful for her project called Nihon Hikikomori Kyôkai (NHK), which has the purpose to help people like Tatsuhiro.

Just after this meeting with her, Tatsuhiro finds out that his neighbor is none other than Kaoru Yamazaki, one of his former classmates. Kaoru is an otaku who just finished his studies in game programming and ask Tatsuhiro to help him create an erotic game.

While Oregairu is about school life, NHK ni Youkoso! deals with society problems with adults. The story is about people who are usually despised by others, like otaku, hikikomori, or lolicon. There is a lot of humour and psychological aspects that are really interesting to watch in that context.

3. Watashi ga motenai no wa dou kangaetemo omaera ga warui! (aka Watamote) (No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys' Fault I’m Not Popular! )

  • Episodes: 12
  • Aired: Jul 2013 – Sept 2013

Because of her big experience and popularity with boys in Otome Games, Tomoko Kuroki thought she was going to become super popular once entering high school. Actually, the reality is far away from her illusions as she found herself being the girl who is always alone and doesn't talk to anyone.

Because she is not popular, she lives in her illusions, and blames others for her status. She tries to be gentle with people sometimes, but she always finishes by misunderstanding the situation and often makes people run away from her.

As in Oregairu, you have a lonely main character who is often mistaken by people. But in the case of Watamote, the character is pretty dark and keeps complaining about others, and I'm pretty sure that some of us can easily assimilate with her in some aspects.

4. Hyouka

  • Episodes: 22
  • Aired: Apr 2012 – Sept 2012

Houtarou Oreki has just entered high school. He just wants to continue what he has always done until now, which is to make the least possible effort in order to not be noticed by his classmates because of his intelligence. However, his sister will ask him to join the Classic Literature Club, which is about to be dismantled.

Joining the club reluctantly, he meets Eru Chitanda, the president of the club. She is a very energetic girl with an extreme curiosity. Joined by two other friends, the club will have to resolve a lot of mysteries thanks to Oreki's intelligence. Especially, when they investigate on the club's anthology, called “Hyouka”.

Oreki and Hikigaya are pretty similar. They don't socialize with people if it's not necessary, and they are both involved unwillingly in a club for different reasons. The story of Hyôka is less deep than Oregairu, but it's really interesting to watch because the atmosphere is relaxing and funny.

5. Kokoro Connect

  • Episodes: 13
  • Aired: Jul 2012 – Sept 2012

The story is about five students who are in the Student Cultural Research club. Taichi, Iori, Himeko, Yoshifumi and Yui are all living an ordinary high school life until some strange phenomenon happens to them. One day, they suddenly switch bodies between the five of them.

This strange happening lasts a few minutes but it becomes recurrent and completely at random. The mysterious man responsible for these happenings is known as, “Heartseed”. He has a lot of projects for the club's members, and they will have to deal with a series of test which will endanger their friendship.

The story is really interesting. Most of the characters, as in Oregairu, lack control on what they do or say, and it causes some problems between them. Because of the body exchange issue, they will have to learn to deal with their own character and how to confront other people.

6. SKET Dance

  • Episodes: 77
  • Aired: Apr 2011 – Sept 2012

In Kaimei's academy, the Sket Brigade is a club composed by three students who decided to help everyone who make a request. Each of them has a speciality, and thanks to that, they can take on a lot of eccentric requests.

Because of the nature of their club, they are badly seen by the Student Council, but keep helping a lot of students with their club. Most of the time, however, the members of the Sket Brigade stay in their club's room, bored, or trying to resolve their own problems.

Here you can find the same principle of the club which exists in order to help and guide people through their troubles and worries. The story might be lighter, with a little more excitement than Oregairu, but it is worth watching. Each character is unique with its own troubles and the story deals pretty well with everyone's lives and background.
