INTRODUCTION / OPENING PARAGRAPH
The future seems like an interesting but kind of terrifying concept. If games and movies are any indications of what’s to come, then most likely we’re going to have space travel and super cool pieces of technology at our fingertips. However, in equal terms, we are also destined to deal with alien lifeforms and possibly ancient cults who are bent on gaining power in society. Despite those very unlikely and highly exaggerated ideals, we still love to deal with them in video games because it’s just fun. Now if you truly want an impressive gaming title that gives you the best gameplay and plenty of future intrigue then you don’t have to look far to find the Deus Ex franchise.
Releasing originally in the year 2000, Deus Ex wowed players with a realistic take on a possible future driven world. Players gained an arsenal of cool weapons and technology which allowed for various ways to deal with situations that appeared in game. Reminiscing about Deus Ex got our team here at Honey’s Anime thinking about other games like Deus Ex. This in turn led us to craft this list of games like Deus Ex for you amazing people out there. We would like to welcome you to our 6 Games Like Deus Ex recommendations article, now if you wouldn’t mind if you look down below you can see what games we felt are the best representation of what Deus Ex offered gamers in its various releases.

1. Fallout 3
- System/Platform: PC, PS3, Xbox 360
- Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
- Developer: Bethesda Game Studios

In the year 2277 we should have seen the world in the best possible light thanks to technological advancements and new discoveries. Unfortunately, after a massive nuclear strike, the world has been polluted and devastated. For your character though, all you’ve ever seen is the world of Vault 101, one of many that existed to save humanity from possible extinction. After your father—a well-known scientist—leaves Vault 101, chaos and panic ensue causing you to also leave in search of him. Now the safe world you once knew is gone and what exists before you is the ruined wasteland of the United States…
Fallout 3 is what most would consider a legendary title—we here at Honey’s Anime agree with this statement—and thus why we have it as a great starting piece for our 6 Games Like Deus Ex list. Players create a character and enter the ruined world of the United States in Fallout 3. Despite horrific mutants and factions bent on killing one another, the world of Fallout 3 is vast and gorgeous like Deus Ex. Players will need to survive this wild world by finding makeshift armor and weapons as well as various other resources to keep alive. Also in this game like Deus Ex, player’s action in Fallout 3 do shift the game’s world and that creates a cool immersion of an ever changing world. With multiple endings and a huge open world to explore, we fully recommend picking up Fallout 3 as soon as possible.

2. Dishonored 2
- System/Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One
- Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
- Developer: Arkane Studios
- Release Date: Nov 11, 2016
Fifteen years ago Dunwall had faced a slew of horrible events though thankfully Corvo Attano was able to restore order. Freeing Emily Kaldwin—the daughter of Dunwall’s Empress—and clearing his name, Carvo and Emily began to shape Dunwall back to a peaceful state. However, once more Dunwall faces a crisis when a crown killer services in a neighboring domain and both Emily and Corvo are seen as the killers. Then once more chaos breaks out during a ceremony for Emily’s mother. Duke Luca Abele has arrived with a powerful witch and thus Emily and Corvo must jump into the fray to stop Dunwall from facing a nightmare once more.
Dishonored 2 is very similar to the great Deus Ex series. From the very beginning players are asked to choose either Corvo or Emily and will play the game as the selected character. Each of these two warriors plays slightly different but that’s just one of the many choices you can make in Dishonored 2. Do you want to take an assassin like route and kill everything in sight or would you prefer a silent approach and keep death to a minimum? Regardless of your choice Dishonored 2 allows you to use your special powers in what ways you want and the game adjusts accordingly. In this game like Deus Ex, you’re only limited to what your mind can think of in handling a situation accordingly and we definitely feel that allows Dishonored 2 a spot on our list of games like Deus Ex.

In this world, there lies a man who hunts and moves within the shadows. Known to a few as Garrett, this thief is known for his skill and efficiency. Hired by Baron Northcrest, Garrett is tasked with stealing something for the Baron alongside a fellow thief by the name of Erin. However, the task fails horribly and Garrett ends up losing Emily and almost loses his life. One year later, Garrett wakes up after a long coma and learns the city has been facing and odd outbreak called “The Gloom” and now he must once again return to the shadows to figure out what moves need to be taken as he returns to form.
Thief is actually a remake of a title released in 1998. Developer Eidos used a lot of the same ideals, story elements and concepts that made the 1998 Thief so great and applied it here with excellent results. Players control Garrett in this first person adventure title where you will sneak around environments and kill opponents in the quietest way possible. Like Deus Ex, Thief gives players choice on how to approach a scenario. Will you raise an alarm in another area and sneak in while the guards are distracted? Maybe you’ll eliminate all the guards and leave no trace of your presence. While Thief deems a slower approach than the Deus Ex franchise, the amount of ways to handle various missions and scenarios is incredibly intuitive and vast. We know if you love Deus Ex you’ll thoroughly enjoy Thief.

4. Mass Effect 3

- Publisher: Electronics Arts
- Release Date: Mar 6, 2012
Mass Effect 3 ends Shepard’s long running story in the Mass Effect world with one final epic tale. Having become a hero by saving the world, Shepard is finally able to earn some much needed rest on Earth. However, Shepard is haunted by odd visions that seem to be warning signs of a possible event to take place in the future. Nothing could have prepared the world for what’s to come in the form of the Reapers powerful beings that want only one thing, the universe. Now Shepard must prepare for one more final battle that will determine the fate of all sentient life in the universe.
Mass Effect 3 might be set in an even farther future than Deus Ex, but that doesn’t mean these two titles don’t sing the same song. Players will once more control Shepard—a character customizable down to gender, looks and even backstory—and engage on a galactic mission once more. With three different endings based on choices made in Mass Effect 3 as well as previous titles, players will be shocked at some of the possible outcomes for life in the universe as we know it. If this doesn’t sound enough like Deus Ex we can also mention the various ways to play thanks to all the decisions outside of combat that players can make. With amazing third person shooting RPG action and plenty of ways to play, we know now only fans of Mass Effect will love this third installment but even newcomers can pick it up and revel in the greatness.

5. Assassin’s Creed II
- System/Platform: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
- Release Date: Nov 17, 2009
Desmond Miles has just survived being captured by the evil Templar group posing as the modern Abstergo group. Desmond however is far from taking it easy as he knows he must continue working with his newfound assassin allies to hopefully stop a possible world altering event from transpiring. Once more, Desmond must enter the Animus to enter into the mind of one of his ancestors, this time in the form of Ezio Auditore da Firenze. A new world of adventures and story await in the now 15th century for Desmond to hopefully find more clues and train him for an upcoming battle between The Templar and The Assassins.
Assassin’s Creed has always been a very interesting franchise that blends modern environments with historical ones. This is no exception in Assassin’s Creed II which one more allows players to enter a huge world to explore and get lost in. Like Deus Ex, in this third person adventure game, players are given a wide berth in what they can and cannot do thanks to freedom of mission choices and how to deal with them. Do you want to wield swords and hack up enemies to reach your target or do you wish to be silent like the assassins and kill with no trace left behind? The choice is ultimately up to you and thus why we here at Honey’s Anime feel Assassin’s Creed II is a great game like Deus Ex to play and let loose in. We also recommend The Ezio Collection for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC as this contains a newer version of Assassin’s Creed II as well as further installments in Ezio’s tale.

6. Watch Dogs 2
- System/Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
- Release Date: Nov 15, 2016
The Central Operating System or better known as ctOS has been installed in Chicago with seemingly great results to the mass populace. Now with ctOS is getting an upgrade to version 2.0 and will be set up in the San Francisco area which should create a safer and happier life. However, as Hacker Marcus Holloway knows all too well the ctOS 2.0 system is anything but a happy new life. With people being falsely labeled as criminals—this including Marcus—all around San Francisco, it seems as if the creators have other motives in store. Hacker Marcus and his new found friends though won’t allow this system to destroy their city and begin to devise plans to fight back.
Watch Dogs 2 is easily the best way for us to finish off our list of 6 Games Like Deus Ex. Players control Marcus in this very accurate portrayal of San Francisco and are free to do what they want and when they want to. Missions mimic this style of freedom in giving players hacking abilities via Marcus’ Cell Phone—similar to Watch Dogs 1—which allows for various maneuvers to take down enemies and handle various situations. If all else fails, like Deus Ex titles, players can rely on using various firearms to handle situations with plenty of bullets and carnage. We honestly ask what’s not to love about Watch Dogs 2 as this is one of those titles that screams free choice all too much like the Deus Ex franchise.

Freedom in games is something we here at Honey’s Anime think some players take for granted. Sure a lot of amazing games exists out in the world but very few give players the means of doing what they want and how they want. Deus Ex isn’t the first title to ever give players the means of handling a situation in multiple ways but it stands as one of the best because of how it plays and accomplishes that goal. That’s why we know we helped some of you out in the world who wondered what game plays like Deus Ex but isn’t simply a cloned product. Now if you want to sing us some praise—more like write us praise—let us know what you thought of our list of games like Deus Ex down below in the comments. If you really love what we do here at Honey’s Anime then keep coming back to this amazing site so you can read even better articles that are soon to be released.
