INTRODUCTION / OPENING PARAGRAPH
People who love things like mecha anime or giant robots have always wished to be able to pilot a giant mech of some sort. That’s why we here at Honey’s Anime love the game MechWarrior because it allows for us to get close to piloting a giant robot and doing battle against others with missiles and guns blazing. Though MechWarrior can’t be the only game that allows for such an experience right? We went through numerous battlefields with robots crashing down on us from all sides to bring you this list that shows there are indeed plenty of games similar to MechWarrior. Welcome to our 6 Games Like MechWarrior article!
Really there only needs to be one qualification to be on such a list like this one and that is immersion. MechWarrior with its first person cockpit view, or even the later additions with the third person like view, allows players to feel close to the mech battling action. When we did our homework, and we always do our homework, we saw that while there are hundreds of mech like games, only a true handful came close to capturing that feeling you feel while playing MechWarrior. Our list includes some great titles indeed such as games that have you customizing every caveat of your robot companion to literally getting the feeling of what it would be like if you had full control over a giant robotic suit. Now then we ask you, are you ready to get into your suit? If you answered yes, then continue reading down below.

The adrenaline of a good first person shooter is a hard thing to capture in any FPS game. Titanfall 2 however does a terrific job thanks to adding not only guns but giant robotic suits to its gameplay. Players will run around the battlefield fighting both AI enemies and other players, if in multiplayer, all while able to summon at will a large bipedal robotic suit they can climb into. The visceral action makes any fan of the mecha like games really feel the fast pacing of combat all while having a strong story to glue everything together. We highly recommend Titanfall 2 if you love MechWarrior but need a modern version of it. Seriously, once you play this game we advise just looking up as you summon your giant mech for the first time, it’s a great sight.

Maybe you just want a multiplayer mech first person shooter that has no story and just focuses on action. HAWKEN made by Adhesive Games and K2 Network aims to deliver what you’re asking for. Free to play, HAWKEN aims to deliver a fun and frantic multiplayer experience focusing on mecha combat. Players can buy new parts for their mechs and jump into several game modes to test out their skills in various game types such as deathmatch or co-op bot team deathmatch. What are you waiting for? We said it was free after all.
HAWKEN is simply a cool experience and for the free price tag we can’t complain for the lack of a story mode. Players can purchase in game item with real money, but HAWKEN doesn’t require that if you wish to just play to unlock whatever you want. HAWKEN looks incredible as well thanks to some amazing graphical detail on the environments as well as the mechs as well. With a vast amount of possible customization options, no two mechs will feel the same. HAWKEN echoes what made MechWarrior so much fun and we love playing it even now.

3. Chromehounds
- System/Platform: Xbox 360
- Publisher: Sega, FromSoftware
- Developer: FromSoftware
- Release Date: Jun 29, 2006
Playing as an unnamed warrior, your missions is to learn about the HOUND types. Each country has different hounds and the Kingdom of Sal Kar is beginning to grow concerned for their own safety. In an effort to prevent being taken over, they begin to build bases on the border of the Tajin Empire. This action makes the nations of Morskoj and Tarakia begin to go on their own offensives to stop the bases construction. The Neroimus war is about to begin, but this is the tale leading to that event.
Chromehounds developed by FromSoftware shows the team’s usual take on making tough games as per usual. Players can play offline, which acts more like a tutorial for the various HOUNDs, or robots and learn the mechanics of the game. Unfortunately while there use to be a rich multiplayer where players could battle one another in their customized suits, it was closed down by Sega in 2009. However, Chromehounds is still loved by its community and you can actually see them attempting to still bring back the servers even now. Fortunately, single player still exists so there’s plenty to still enjoy about Chromehounds but we had to mention it on this list because of its strategic take on the mech gaming genre as a whole.

Taking place on a planet called Helios, players take control of the Captain or MechWarrior. Working for the Wolf’s Dragoons, the Captain finds he is tasked to land on Helios when they learn that all communication from the planet seems to have stopped. When The Captains ship, the Icarus, is shot down the Captain learns that there is some kind of cult that has appeared on the planet. It’s up to The Captain to fight back to regain control of the planet by any means necessary. Suit up, you’re about to be thrown headlong into a giant robot war.
MechAssault has done some impressive things for a third person mech game. Not only was in one of the first games that had Xbox live support but it was the first of many games to include a lot of elements of Xbox Live concepts such as creating lobbies or using Quick Match. Sadly, the online features of this game have been long gone but players can still enjoy a strong single player experience with tons of third person giant mech action. Honestly, MechAssault was one of the coolest mech like games we’ve played long ago and our memories will never fade of our times with this impressive game. Now if you’ll excuse us, we need to find our old copies of MechAssault to bring back some nostalgic memories.

The game boasts 10 missions that can be played in differing orders based on the choices the player makes during set moments of the game and other missions. The battle for humanity continues in Armored Core V.
FromSoftware has continued to make Armored Core games for quite some time but Armored Core V has been one of favorites thanks to its almost dizzying amount of robotic customization and impressive visuals. Players will find that everything from the head to the thrusters on the legs can be customized to make a truly unique robot that adheres to the gaming style of the player. Battles are in third person and are truly fast and frenetic so you’ll find yourself truly gripping the controller tightly during some of the skirmishes. Armored Core V is truly a modern day take on the MechWarrior ideals and thus why we have it on this list. Be prepared to sink hours upon hours into Armored Core V as you find that perfect balance in attack and defense your mech needs to survive the battlefield.

6. Steel Battalion
- System/Platform: Xbox
- Publisher: Capcom, Microsoft Studios
- Developer: Capcom, Nude Maker, Capcom Production Studio 4
- Release Date: Sept 12, 2002
Our list needed to end on Steel Battalion; it was a necessity. Steel Battalion had one aim, to make the reality of piloting a mech come as close to home as possible. This was accomplished using a giant peripheral that allowed players to wield a giant controller that looked like what anyone imagined a mech suits internal piloting mechanisms would look like. Players could use the giant controller to move the mech in an unprecedented way such as piloting the various directions and even an eject button that would save the player if things got too rough. Steel Battalion Capcom, Nude Maker and Capcom Production Studio 4 is the player’s dream come true to finally feel as if they are piloting a large robotic death machine.
Seriously, Steel Battalion may not have been perfect, but oh was it such an amazing experience! The large controller that had two joysticks and three pedals looked like it was ripped out of a plane’s cockpit but given elements that would make it applicable to a mech like setting. Steel Battalion was a lot of fun but it is very challenging, dying once meant having to restart the game from scratch. Yet that same amount of challenge made Steel Battalion seem like an anime scenario, there are no second chances for most mecha pilots in anime, so players were forced to really get better and better if they wished to complete Steel Battalion. Overall, if you can’t tell we here at Honey’s Anime loved Steel Battalion and we’re sure if you can somehow get a hold of this game you’ll fall in love with it as well.
Final Thoughts
MechWarrior really did something amazing when it released in 1989. Giving the player such a new take on the first person genre lead to many game developers trying to find the means of mimicking Dynamix and Activision’s successful game. That’s why our list we feel is so great, because it found the games that truly reminded you that while it may not yet be possible to truly pilot a large robotic death machine, one could at least do so in a video game world. Our list comes to a close and we here at Honey’s Anime hope you enjoyed the ride. Let us know down in the comments your thoughts on our list and if you have played any of these amazing titles. Don’t forget to return to Honey’s Anime for more great gaming articles just like this one.
