Rift from developer Trion Worlds is easily one of the better MMORPGs we’ve played in some time. Like Ragnarok Online, Rift prides itself on giving players large scale battles with multiple friends and or online players all while taking down loads of dungeons and various other instant events. Originally Rift was a paid subscription based title but in 2012, Trion Worlds went for a free to play method that actually made Rift a lot more appealing to play. We here at Honey’s Anime knew we had to include Rift on our 6 Games Like Ragnarok Online list and if you download it and play it soon you’ll agree with our decision. Just be prepared to get lost in Rift’s huge world and mass amount of sights to see and things to do.

4. Mabinogi

  • System/Platform: PC
  • Publisher: Nexon Korea
  • Developer: devCAT
  • Release Date: Jun 22, 2004

Mabinogi is a MMORPG where players choose one of several races and set forth in a large fantasy world. Going against the modern theme of most MMORPGs, those that play Mabinogi will find a lot of freedom in their development of their character. Players are not locked into skills based on race or profession and can feely level up various skills via in game AP. Players will find a world where real life tasks—such as plowing fields or making clothing—can be done for various gains. If you’re ready to embark in a world where freedom of choice is largely the name of the game, then enter Mabiongi.

Mabinogi honestly is one of those MMORPGs that takes a lot of risks. Instead of favoring a linear progression—more so focusing on a story narrative—Mabinogi gives players the ability to either level up via fantasy-like work or to engaged in the campaign proper. Mabinogi may seem like a silly looking MMORPG but like Ragnarok Online, there is a lot of depth seen within not only the gameplay but also the quests available and the gameplay itself. Mabinogi has had a long life as an MMORPG and honestly that is a rarity only mimicked by few gaming titles which is why we placed it on our list of 6 Games Like Ragnarok Online. Now then what are you waiting for, the fantasy world of Mabinogi is waiting for you to go and try it out.

Final Thoughts

Ragnarok Online probably won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. MMORPGs tend to be risky ventures for most gaming studios and clearly Ragnarok Online was a risk too. However, when a company like Gravity—or some of the developers we mentioned above—are successful in their risk, we get titles that not only wow us but stay around for years to come. With that folks though we close our books on yet another great recommendation list. If you have any suggestions for more games like Ragnarok Online—or want to talk about the titles mentioned here—be sure to comment down below to let us know. As always we here at Honey’s Anime also aren’t going to close our doors anytime soon so make sure to keep coming back for more great articles to read.
