2. Heavy Rain

  • System/Platform: PS3, PS4
  • Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
  • Developer: Quantic Dream
  • Release Date: Feb 18, 2010

Four characters will have their lives colliding together all surrounding a serial killer known as The Origami Killer. Ethan Mars a grieving father, Scott Shelby a Private Eye, Norman Jayden a FBI Agent, and Madison Paige a striving photojournalist all will find their lives affected by a series of events outside their control. While each deals with their various issues, their lives will change according to the player’s input. Unlike most titles, if one of these four souls dies, the game will continue on but their lack of a presence will be felt on the narrative. What happens will be on your shoulders, every choice indeed has a consequence in Heavy Rain.

The Walking Dead: Season One is all about choices changing narrative greatly. All too similarly, Heavy Rain follows this theme strongly. Players navigate around the world in a third person perspective, like The Walking Dead: Season One, but where the game truly shines is when narrative choices pop up. Players are timed to react to events and failure or poor decisions will greatly affect the character’s tale moving onward. If you truly love the immense feeling of controlling a story with so much detail, we highly recommend giving Heavy Rain a try. We do also recommend the PS4 version as it strengthens the graphics and animations.

3. Life Is Strange

Now able to rewind time Max finds herself looking at a new world of possibilities helping people and avoiding drama. However, little does Max know that her powers will be used to stop a much greater issue than just handling the typical school yard bully and how strange life can truly be.

Dontnod Entertainment created an amazing video game with Life Is Strange. The concept of how it feels to be that awkward high schooler is something many of us here at Honey’s Anime can fully understand all too well. Life Is Strange follows Max as she begins to use her time rewinding powers for various tasks that affect her tale as well as the several characters that reside in Max’s life. Similar to The Walking Dead: Season One, players will find that simple choices such as talking to a character at an opportune moment or not can affect a later response from them. With a very unique style, a truly dark story and some simple gameplay mechanics, Life Is Strange earns the right to be here on our 6 Games Like The Walking Dead: Season One list. Won’t lie, would be very interesting to see what we could do differently in high school with rewinding powers.

Based on the Fables graphic novels, The Wolf Among Us aims to tell a prequel story. Players take the role of Bigby Wolf or better known as the former Big Bad Wolf. The residents of Fabletown rely on Bigby as he is the Sheriff of Fabletown and while he may be tough, he clearly is fair according to most. After having an incident with an intoxicated woodman and prostitute, it seems as if it’s just another day of being Sheriff. However, when the woman’s severed head is left in front of Bigby’s place, the big bad wolf may find his older methods of being might be necessary.

Once more Telltale Games blows us away with The Wolf Among Us, a spin on the Fables series. Don’t fret though if you’ve never read Fables as The Wolf Among Us needs no prior knowledge to enjoy the story. Taking control of Bigby players will walk around and explore various areas of Fabletown and make choices that change the narrative of how The Wolf Among Us plays out in this 5 episode series. We really enjoyed the action moments as well, they truly feel incredible and give you the sense of what it would be like to be an intimidating big bad wolf. Telltale games makes some amazing video game series and The Wolf Among Us definitely is one of those. If you’re a fan of anything they have made, even besides The Walking Dead: Season One, you’ll find nothing to dislike about this fairytale story set in a very different world.
