3. PlanetSide 2

  • System/Platform: PC, PS4
  • Publisher: Daybreak Game Company
  • Developer: Daybreak Game Company
  • Release Date: Nov 20, 2012

Once more players get to enjoy one of the biggest FPS titles ever thanks to PlanetSide 2. Three Factions—the Terran Republic, New Conglomerate and Vanu Sovereignty—are vying for power. The Terran Republic seek to keep law and order over anything else. Meanwhile New Conglomerate aim to defeat the Terran Republic and will use whatever tactics they can. Finally the Vanu Sovereignty wants to use technology and research of alien artifacts to garner hidden powers. These three factions are going to fight in a large scale war and you’ll be choosing a side to become one of the newest members.

PlanetSide 2 is easily one of the coolest and most innovative FPS titles around. Players of PlanetSide 2 will not be in a normal 10 vs 10 type lobby or 20 vs 20 but in a massively online world where player counts can reach up to 2000 at one time. This may sound overly chaotic and far from a game like Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, but we here at Honey’s Anime have a method to our madness. Players will need to rely on clever tactics such as capturing bases and building them as well if they wish to survive in such a huge game. You could just run around guns blazing as one of the three factions—each with their own weapon styles—but that won’t keep you alive long, trust us we tried a few times. Not only does PlanetSide 2 look gorgeous and plays incredibly well for how many people are within a singular server, but if you love Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six and wish it was on a large scale, then you’ll love every aspect of PlanetSide 2.

4. SOCOM 4 U.S. Navy SEALs

  • System/Platform: PS3
  • Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
  • Developer: Zipper Interactive
  • Release Date: Apr 19, 2011

When a rebel unit gains weapons and hijacks ships belonging to a private military group, a special U.S. Navy SEALs team is launched. Players will take control of Commander Cullen Gray as he leads his unit to stopping this rebel group before things get very out of hand. This task will have Commander Cullen unit go through deadly locations against an unknown amount of insurgents. One wrong move and the mission could end for everyone as Malaysia is taken over by rebels.

The SOCOM series has always been known as a very tactical based game like Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six. This is gameplay mechanic carries over in SOCOM 4 U.S. Navy SEALs—or just SOCOM 4—where players will need to order their teammates in smart ways. Players will be able to tell their squad how to move and react to certain threats to avoid unnecessary actions and alerting too many enemies. If you tired of the AI you can always play online with friends and take on the story mode cooperatively. Unfortunately, we can’t recommend the multiplayer as it has been shut down but we do remember some great times in the game’s several modes. However, what we love the most about SOCOM 4 easily is the similarities it shares with Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six where twitch shooting in this third player shooter will not get you very far.

5. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising

  • System/Platform: PC, PS3, Xbox 360
  • Publisher: Codemasters
  • Developer: Codemasters
  • Release Date: Oct 6, 2009

In China during the month of May 2011, mass unemployment and political destabilization have caused a vast amount of issues. The People’s Liberation Army takes over Skira and the newly found oil sites which were owned by the Russian Federation. Fearing a possible war with Russia China seeks help from the United States to retake the island of Skira. Now your unit must take down the rebel uprising before things escalate even further out of hand. A large scale war is about to happen in Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is a fun but extremely tough FPS title that reminds us of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six from the past. Developer Codemasters clearly wanted to give players a realistic military FPS title as enemies are both smart and very efficient. Making matters tougher is that unlike most linear FPS titles, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising gives players large maps and plenty of ways to maneuver around them. Running around aimlessly and or in the open will probably be a poor choice of actions as you’ll get shot from enemies who are lying in wait. Whether you’re playing single player—where you can voice orders to your teammates—or cooperatively with friends, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising will test your skills and trust us folks you’ll love every moment of it.

6. SWAT 4

  • Developer: Irrational Games
  • Release Date: Apr 5, 2005

In SWAT 4 players will lead a police SWAT team through a fictional East Coast. Players will have to lead their five man squad through various locations as they take down various threats. Developer Irrational Games wants to gives players a real life take on what SWAT teams deal with in various crisis situations. What that means is players can’t always rely on killing subjects but need to aim for non-lethal tactics to arrest them. SWAT 4 will take players through 13 missions where they will be ranked based on actions taken during each mission.

In most Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, players were given realistic like settings and missions to simulate real life operations. That’s why we love SWAT 4 for its similar gameplay approach and why we deemed it a perfect way to end our 6 Games Like Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six. SWAT 4 is unlike most modern FPS titles where shooting is advised first and foremost. In SWAT 4, you’re trying to arrest enemies and not lose squad members. We loved the scenarios presented in Irrational Games SWAT 4 as they feel life-like and give a true immersion unlike most titles. We unfortunately couldn’t talk much about the multiplayer elements as they have been shut down for some time now but we heard good things from fans and there are still some diehard fans who keep original servers open to allow multiplayer on non-official servers. We here at Honey’s Anime love SWAT 4 as this tactical FPS harkens to the greatness of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six titles and is extremely fun and realistic.
