[Anime Culture Monday] Anime Recipes! - Roll Cake (Log Horizon) & Plain Donuts (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun)

Do you smell that? Something must be cooking in the kitchen~! Mmmhmmm It’s Monday and we are back to bring you more culture tips with our Eat Like Your Anime Faves Series! This week we are taking a look at the sweeter side of things. When you see anime characters dig into desserts it just does something to you and you want to join in right? No doubt. Well now, it’s time to get rolling so that you too can enjoy what you see!

This week, we are taking a look at donuts, normally, a bit more involved of a recipe, and Roll Cake. Roll Cake this week comes to us from one of the most popular rival shows to Sword Art Online, Log Horizon! The scene takes place outside of a bakery where we have our character looking in on what is a delicious looking Roll Cake! In Japan, Roll cake would be the Western equivalent of a sponge cake with a dollop of cream on top. Used in various situations and events, roll cake can even be used and sometimes is used as a birthday cake. Light, crisp, and refreshing, you won’t be crashing from a sugar high after this one! The doughnuts, while standard, come from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. Normal donuts take a long time to make because you have to heat up oil, and be very careful not to burn your place down, or burn yourself! This time, it is special and a bit different. So read on and enjoy this week’s lesson~!

Roll Cake from Log Horizon

As mentioned above, this dish hails from Log Horizon. More specifically, episode 4 from season two. While the viewer is gazing on what appears to be quite the fancy roll cake, we are teased. This roll cake is not your standard roll cake. This one has strawberries on top, has been rolled in shaved almonds, and those strawberries are placed ever so delicately in some chocolate chip cream. Yum! That’s just about enough to make anyone’s mouth water. Well, without further ado, let’s take a look at this simple cake recipe and how you can dress it up to make it even fancier! The best part? You don’t even need an oven!

Jealousy is not even close to how we feel about this…

What you will need:( Note: Serves 2-4 people. )

Eggs
2

Pancake Mix
4 Tablespoons

Milk
2 tbsp

Sugar
1 tbsp

Butter or Margarine
10 g

heavy cream
½ cup

Sweetened condensed milk.
2 tbsp

Note:

If you are allergic to dairy, try to use soy alternatives! Feel free to add fun food coloring to the whipped cream or vanilla extract to give it a bit more sweetness.

How to Cook It:

  1. 1

Bring the butter to room temperature.
  2. 2

Combine with the milk and mix well.
  3. 3

With an electric mixer, combine the eggs and sugar together in a bowl and beat on medium speed until the mixture is thick. Now, combine this with the butter & milk mixture.
  4. 4

Next, take a heatproof, or microwave-safe shallow dish and line it with parchment paper.
(NOTE: DO NOT PUT ALUMINUM FOIL ON THE DISH. IT WILL FRY YOUR MICROWAVE.)
  5. 5

After that, pour the batter into the dish and cover the top with some plastic wrap.
  6. 6

Microwave the batter for about 2 minutes. Keep an eye on it and once it starts to thicken, stop. If it needs more time, gently flip the dish over, and be careful that you do not overcook it.
  7. 7

Take the cake out and let it cool. While you are waiting, beat your heavy whipping cream and condensed milk together to make the whipped cream. Clean up while the cake is still cooling. You are going to have to wait a bit anyway.
  8. 8

Once the cake has completely cooled, take whatever fruits you would like and combine with your whipped cream and spread on top of the cake. Gently, and we mean GENTLY, roll the cake up.
  9. 9

Wrapped in the parchment paper, chill the cake in your fridge for a few hours with the seam of the roll cake facing down. This is so it does not open up.

(Note: If you are underage, or new to cooking, be sure to let your parent/guardian know what you are doing. We don’t want you to get hurt! Be very careful when using the mixer and tie your hair back if you have longer hair. )

Yum!

Plain Donuts from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

This time, we are making donuts on a very, very easy scale that anyone can do. Like we said above, donuts can be quite the involved process. This time though, we have some SUPER EASY donuts that you can make and you only need 3 ingredients! They were regally lined up in that first episode of Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, and if you look below, while there are some donuts that have generous and different toppings on them, we can also see that plain donuts are the most prominent. These donuts are a little bit different from the ones we are accustomed to in the west. Because they are easy to cook, these are a bit more fluffy and lighter on your stomach. Let’s get right to it!

What you will need:( Note: Serves 2-3 people. )

Pancake mix
100g

Milk
½ cup

egg
1

Sugar
as much or as little as you want

Optional Ingredients:

We are just making plain donuts, but small things will do well on these. You can always put things like raisins, chocolate chips, or a simple glaze on top of the donuts as well. With the glaze, though, it is best to wait until after they come out of the oven!

How to Cook It:

  1. 1

Start by pre-heating your oven to 350F (180C).
  2. 2

Combine all of your ingredients into a bowl and mix them all together well with a whisk or spatula.
  3. 3

Take your donut mold, (rubber is recommended as it is easier to get the donuts out without breaking them!) and grease it with oil.
  4. 4

Pour in the batter and if you are going to be topping them with something, add them now. (Nuts, Raisins, Chocolate chips, etc.)
  5. 5

Bake for 15 minutes and they are done! Do not remove the donuts from the mold until after they have cooled fully.

(Note: Be careful with the hot oven and be sure to let a parent/guardian know you are cooking. Also, wash, wash, wash everything. Raw eggs are not a game. )

If you did everything right, it should come out looking something like this!

Yum!

Final Thoughts

Woooooo! We did it! Another week down, another delicious two dishes are able to be made easily. The best part too is, is now that it is summer, you totally have time to try and make them! Surprise your friends and family with a lightly sweet treat that is not going to put them in a food coma afterward. Who knows, with 4th of July around the corner, you could probably make a blue whipped cream roll cake and top with strawberries for that 4th of July party! Did you enjoy yourself? We sure did. Let us know if there is something you want to know how to cook next and be sure to leave a comment or tweet us a picture if you make either!

Till next time,
